I'm pretty happy with this. Technology needs to advance and Apple got it going. Look at it this way guys, do you still want to carry that CD Player when we can store MP3's on our phones? Apple is God

Well there's only one God and I guarantee that neither Apple nor anything else in His created universe is Him. But yes an mp3 player or smart phone can hold far more songs than a CD. Doesn't make sense to carry around a discman and a book of CDs.

Apple needs to make and market black accessories. Period. End of story.

It would be nice if the EarPods matched the iPhone they come with.

You think??? I'm practically certain. There's at least a handful of guys who argue with Apple in every detail. Whatever your issue with anything Apple is doing, it's always YOUR fault or YOU need to change to comply. It's the opposite of "think different" unless "different" means "with whatever Apple is selling or wants to sell soon."

I'm certain that the next iPhone could be made out of razor blades and these guys would argue the merits of regularly turning over our blood supplies. Otherwise, I just can't grasp this level of blind brand loyalty... even within the concept of RDF, Kool-aid, etc.
I find more amusing how certain people can't even conceive the fact you can like unpopular decisions by Apple. I don't even have an iPhone and the last one I had was a 3GS, since they sure as expensive as hell. I actually don't even own any Apple device currently, but by all means, you're free to see this as blind brand loyalty. LOL.

wait, they never saw the Xperia Z3? o_O not only did it keep the jack - it can play 96/24 native!

All this is still running on BT 4.2 and the pods were test @256-Kbps AAC - who cares it has a chip in it - they do not even say what the driver size is.

When I first read about the 3.5mm removal a few months back (thanks Arn's team) I was very unhappy.
I knew the adapter would be Free, and slowly slowly catch a monkey I'm won over.

• But we dont need Phil's condescending comments thank you, as I say he may be loyal by I think apple has better that HIM waiting in the wings to do a better presentation.

No doubt Phils net worth is $100,000,000+ but we dont deserve patronising comments from Phil - see OP

I'm glad they got rid of the jack as this will push progress in this area and frankly I've been cheerleading this for a while.

Agreed, I wish they'd eject the battery & camera next to sold-seperately, add-ons to spur on innovation in wireless power and holodeck technologies. So what if a battery-less phone can't work for a while. It's the progress push to the next iPhone after that that won't need batteries that I long for.

And 2-dimensional photography is so much older than 3.5mm jacks. Get rid of that antiquated camera technology so we can all have holodeck projectors in maybe iPhone 13.

I mean, if getting rid of something that "just works" fine for pretty much EVERYONE is what it takes to push progress to something better, get rid of the whole phone to spur on teleporter technologies too.

Just think:
  • With a teleporter, the equivalent of phone audio and FaceTime will achieve a "live" quality (because you will be there).
  • With a holodeck, we can just project the bands we want to hear into the room or car with us to play the music live- no adapters, no aux jack, no bluetooth, etc.
  • With wireless energy, we don't need to ever think about charging anything.
Yes, let's push progress by getting rid of what works fine today. ;)

The phone company with the most massive top and bottom bezels of any phone by far. Knowing that other companies have had waterproof phones with headphone Jack's and way less bezel. Has the nerve to say it was necessary to remove the headphone jack for waterproofing and to fit more in our already massive bezels?

LOL So true. I know Apple has very smart people working for them. But if they were as smart as they seem then they would have figured out a way to retain the headphone jack.

You know what takes courage, spending $159 on a pair of airpods.

Total joke anyone spending that it from an Arab country or an idiot.

zero bazel June '17 maybe hold out?

Still don't understand why people are comparing this to things like the removal of the floppy disk and cassette players. Each of those things were replaced by better technologies. Ditching a wired technology with a wireless one isn't the same thing, but rather something that complements existing things. For example, Wi-Fi isn't a replacement for Ethernet, for without Ethernet, you generally wouldn't have Wi-Fi.

From the interview, it just sounds like Apple couldn't fix a supposed issue that they were having. Were they telling the truth, or was it lazy engineering? We'll never truly know.

There was literally nothing wrong with the 3.5mm jack.
Except Apple removed the Ethernet port from their computers, so it's exactly the same. Heck, the new MacBook has exactly one USB port and that's it.

I'm fairly certain Apple will release phones - and Macs - with NO ports at all in the next 3-5 years (wireless charging, music, and data). The Watch already, has no ports to speak of (the diagnostic port in the band slot doesn't count).

Probably if people are going to keep rationalizing some decisions by posting how we have to get rid of something that works exceedingly well to spur on lessor technologies to get better. Why can't those lessor technologies get better on their own so that they surpass the "antiquated", motivating the masses to switch to them because they are obviously better and then few will care so much about deprecating a lessor technology?

Did Crackberry phones have to be exterminated to spur on Apple to develop iPhone? Or did Apple develop iPhone and then let it's obvious superiority pretty much kill the Crackberry?

While innovation can sometimes work by subtraction (as in, innovate your way out of a sticky situation), it's not necessary to always subtract to drive innovation.

so what's your issue with it being removed?

I hope this new iPhone will flop. Then they would realise it was a mistake to remove it. I'll be fine with my SE for a couple of years but after that I guess I'll have to get a Samsung or whatever still has a headphone jack.

Seriously? They give you Lightning EarPods....they give you an adapter.

Time to move forward pal. They're using the water resistance as a reason but the real reason to remove it is simply to ween people off the need for it. To force people to move forward.

I never use the headphone jack. i definitely won't miss it. Bring on the stereo speakers and better battery life in addition to the other new features.
