Uhhhh AirPower was shown off for a year before Apple even decided to cancel such a product. Many features were rumored for different iPhones, according to rumor mills yet when the phones do come out, people complain that it didn’t have said features, considering they were never promised in the first place.

AirPods refresh was rumored a while back and set to launch with AirPower but it was pushed back until Apple canceled it. Only then did AirPods get their update. Hence my reluctance to follow rumor mills. I stand by what I said, until Apple officially ships it, then it doesn’t exist.
When was AirPower officially announced as a product other than being teased? Yes, it was allegedly a product, allegedly. But I agree following rumors as fact is always YMMV.

It took Apple over 2 years to introduce the 2nd gen Airpods which were just released in March and now they are going to release a 3rd gen? Thats less that 7 months - I just purchased my 2nd gen 2 months ago..

Noise cancellation would be an awesome feature but I'll hold off and see what Apple includes in the 4th gen

When I purchased my iMac early this year I asked the guy at the Apple Store, are they going to release a new one anytime soon? Because I can just wait a bit if they are. He assured me they were not and if there was a new 2019 one it wouldn't be until later in the year. Sure enough, next month BAM new iMac. That's just what they do, it's what this company has become. How much money can we possibly squeeze from you? They are the Veruca Salt of the tech world.

260$ let me guess; 100$ extra for PRO name...
Nope. $60 more for noise cancellation and other unknown features.
Jesus Apple, I'm not paying an extra $100 just for the ones that will actually stay in my ears.
Who knows if they’ll stay in your ears, but they’re only $60 higher aren’t they?
Nothing says pro like a $100 up charge
Pro means what it’s always meant, the model at the top end of the lineup. In this case, an extra $60 for the additional features.

Very curious to see how effective the noise cancelling is and how refined the experience is. Even if the noise cancelling tech isn’t quite on par with Bose, it’s a buy for me if they nail the experience.

The deafeningly loud audio notifications on Bose that can’t be disabled or reduced have soured my experience with them to the point where I only use them on flights.

The AirPods experience on the other hand, it’s like a velvet glove. The notifications are always like a gentle nudge instead of a bullhorn in the ear. Let’s hope this is a repeat of that.

Listen, I love my AirPods, they go everywhere with me for the most part, and the ‘15 minutes of charge being equivalent to three hours’ of usage is excellent, but I hope these aren’t labeled ‘Pro’. The whole Pro moniker is silly (Kinda like Pro Max). But if the technology delivers, I’m interested, hopefully they expand other than just white with a color, but I’m curious to see if we have an October event in the next two weeks.

What they have become? What? Lol. You purchased a device 600+ days into a cycle. That's such a long time. The mistake here was thinking store employees know anything more than anyone with access to the internet does. They don't. This site has a fairly handy guide for these sort of things: https://buyersguide.macrumors.com

I'm hoping for a completely in-ear form factor. I've been through a few different pairs of wireless in-ear buds... currently on the Samsungs. They're fine, but I miss some of the features that would come with an ios specific device. I love the isoaltion of a custom m olded in-ear... wish there was an apple insert that I coudl send off to Ultimae Ears and get a fully custom molded airpod.

Totally agree. The proliferation of the "Pro" moniker in consumer products is one the dumbest trends in tech naming conventions -- and that's saying something.

Exactly -- came here to say this. Apple is one of the most secretive companies on earth. Retail employees (depending on your draw) know either as much or less than a well informed MR reader.

If Sennheiser made in-ears with an H1 (or H2) chip in them, with a USB-C / Qi charging case, I would buy them immediately. Since they don't do that, AirPods Pro seem to be the best option for me. Maybe it will be possible to get a custom mold for them.

The best feature of Apple audio products is not the noise cancellation, charging, etc. But the effortless switching between iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Macbook... No other manufacturer can do it because it's controlled by the software from Apple.

$60 extra for the name and the Apple White. These seem to be the same thing as Apple’s own Powerbeats Pro Wireless earbuds without the Beats name and the ear hook.

Honest question: Do the Powerbeats Pro have active noise cancelling?

Or am I misunderstanding and these rumored AirPods won't have active noise cancelling?

So side anecdote here:

I don’t care for that whole ‘in ear’ design, what I really like about the AirPods, is when I take them in and out of my ear, it’s so easy to grab them by the stick/boom versus having to fidget with the in-ear design. I suspect Apple will keep the same design similar to how the AirPods have been, but obviously add more technical features as the article indicates with noise canceling, maybe more bass /trouble output, etc.

My first gen Pods barely last 20 minutes on a call so I need a new pair. I can pay $100 for replacement Pods but I will wait to see what Apple actually releases, if they do, and what the specs are. I do prefer the in ear design as my ears don’t handle the current pods well.

Wow, looking at price to weight that's a bit shocking, but my Airpods get a lot of use so it does amortize down. As it is, I don't have much need for noise cancellation in my Airpods unless it is good enough to use on an airplane with a battery life to match. I'm guessing that's still out of reach in this form factor...

Still, if they keep going in this direction and just get the battery life to cover a long domestic flight, I might be able to eventually leave my larger noise cancelling headphones at home and use Airpods for just about everything.

Soon we will be going to restaurants and the most expensive meal options will be the “pro“ selections

“Would you like the Spinach Salad Pro? - it’s clearly better and starts at $19”

Or you can pay a little more to have Apple change battery for your AirPods. No need to throw it away.
It's $50 per battery, which comes out to $150 for all three (each AirPod and the case). Call me crazy, but that's basically forcing people into handing them back to Apple for recycling and buying a new set for $10 more. I'm not saying Apple is being malicious, just that replacing the batteries isn't exactly a great option.

$260 for earbuds that will likely have the same 18 month average use expectancy as the current ones? No thanks. I'd get the critically reviewed $230 Sony WF-1000M3's. At least you can replace the batteries in those.

To me it’s a business expense. I’d spend $260 in a heartbeat for something that makes talking on the phone more pleasant multiple times a day, that instantly pairs with your iPhone.
