I've done it a myriad of ways at this point
Low light, no light, lots of light. With glasses without glasses, staring at the camera intently, looking at the phone normally. Close to my face, far from my face. And of course various combinations of those attempts.
Hmmm .. that’s surprising. It’s possible that your phone is defective or at least performing marginally. I would certainly schedule a Genius Bar appointment to have the unit diagnosed. I’m sorry you are experiencing such poor performance and hope you are able to improve it.

You must of gotten mad when they removed floppy disk drives for computers also? I mean they should of left it as an option right?

was the Floppy disk a better user experience? You fail to see the issue. Today you will go home and use a knife and fork, and tomorrow if apple tells you not to use it, will you make comments referring to floppy disks to those people in the dark ages who think the fork and knife...... is a great user experience ;) Think for your self is my advice.

Then the iPhone X isn’t for for you. Maybe a Bentley isn’t for you either. So chose the BMW and this case choose the iPhone 8. It’s a luxury phone not meant for everyone to buy.
So you're telling me because a feature isn't working as advertised its not for me? I wanted the full screen experience and otherwise enjoy the phone, but I do type in my code far too often, at least for the premium priced phone.

The price is crazy. I paid 749 for an iPhone 4 unlocked from Apple on launch day. Now iPhone X unlocked from Apple is 1500. They’ve increased cost over time to now crazy levels.

My thought process to the iphones were the following(these are my ****** oncontract price). iPhone 8 for 430, but iPhone 8+ is 560 and has bigger screen and dual camera(and the size, urgh), but the iPhone X is 800 and has oled and slightly better zoom camera than 8+! Then I look at iPhone 8 price again and I don’t see the x’s value to be almost 2x that of the iPhone 8.

So I bought an iPhone 8.

Also remember they just need to sell an iPhone even if it isn’t a x. The price of admission is steep, but they want you to buy apps, use their services which gives them continued sales

Not for everyone

Even TouchID is not perfect for everyone. Wet fingers are a real problem, so are gloves in winter.
Having both would be awesome, but I don't see Apple investing in under the screen fingerprint recognition now that FaceID is working on their top smartphone.
I'm still using TouchID since I own an 8+, but FaceID wasn't the reason why I went for the 8 instead of X. I know some people complain about FaceID, but I know many don't, and I know I'll eventually have it on my iPhone, maybe not next year but at last in 2/3 years.

I think they were true.

What are they going to say, "hey, we wanted to have Touch ID under the screen, but we failed."?

I don’t believe the rumours, if Apple were working on it they wouldn’t of released the iPhone X with Face ID, it’s typical Apple they they remove a technology for something else they have been doing it for year and very successfully. Floppy disk was removed so was the DVD Drive, ports on the MacBooks are the recent things to go.

I love my i phone X and not sure about all the negativity about the notch I don't even notice it I only wish the X plus was aviliable instead of the iPhone 8 but hey there is always next year.

I think they were.

What are they going to say, "hey, we wanted to have Touch ID under the screen, but we failed."?
They started development of the A11 SoC in 2014. It includes a dual core neural network processor capable of 600 billion operations per second. For FaceID. The TrueDepth system was also long in development.

Plus, the design of the X was locked in November 2016, long before those rumors of TouchID underscreen or TouchID on the back started circulating.

I know it’s important for some to believe Apple failed at TouchID underscreen on the X, but I’m not sure why. There’s no facts to back it up, but you’re entitled to your wrong, unsupportable opinion.

Idk why they had delusions about the demand of a 1,000 dollar smartphone. There just aren’t enough people with enough disposable income to prompt that kind of demand.

I find it quite hilarious that a main selling point is a new way to unlock a phone. Like just think about this for a minute and let it sink in. To unlock a phone. In a perfect world there should not even be the need to lock a phone. Strange if u think about it

I feel like Apple just fully expects to sell less iPhones in the coming years simply due to the fact that there is no real need to update every two years just to go back to using the same old Apps. Gotta make up this loss by the price of the phone to please those shareholders.

Like the iPad „Pro“. I guess Apple was fully aware that people wouldnt buy as many high end tablets anymore so they gonna charge more for those people who do buy it to basically level it out

When the BBC were reporting on the slow down fiasco last night, the reporter was talking to someone on the X, and the notch at the top such a distraction. There should have been a straight top to the image. Samsung or Google would have been slaughtered by Apple followers if they had released this.

Clearly you don’t own one.

I love my X. I'm all in on FaceID.

I still think they are charging $200 too much and would tell most people looking for a new phone, to get the 7 or 8.

If they want to brand this as a premium phone they should have included fast chargers.

I can only imagine what they will try to sell next year's X Plus at.

I agree 125%

Love my X but definitely not worth the no promo price point - now I sold my 7 plus for $675 and pocketed the money and financed my X. I knew my upgrade next year to the plus model would probably be my “get out of the yearly upgrade cycle” ticket

If Apple wants to sell more X pluses next year they should include a fast charger option at minimum and adjust the pricing because clearly the X was too much for most people to stomach (notice I didn’t say afford).

Also worth mentioning the Note 8 released with promos and has been featured with $300 gift cards since nothing like that for the X without a trade in so until the promos ramp up on the X model; the X will sell slower than normal or the past models (iPhone 7 had a $650 trade in promo)

There is lot to like (OLED, gestures, form factor) and lot to dislike (price, notch, camera bump, iOS11 bugs). I am satisfied with Face ID. iOS11 bugs will be squashed, strange iOS11 decisions hopefully will be fixed to my liking (JB would help with those for sure!). Price is bonkers, but tech is my hobby.

Fundamentally, fake news like this is simply a salve for those who would dearly love to have one of these but can’t afford one. Full stop, end of story.

Sametime in China

"
Morgan Stanley says that the iPhone X is proving such a hit in China that it is accelerating the rate at which existing iPhone owners upgrade, and the rate at which Android users switch to iPhone.

Analyst Katy Huberty also echoed an earlier report that the iPhone X rapidly overtook the iPhone 8, despite the head-start of the lower-cost phone …"

I don't believe I do when it works 80 percent. Given the threads in the iPhone forum, I'm not alone, there are others that are dealing with similar issues.
Working only 80% of the time is exactly the failure mode you could expect with mis-aligned or otherwise out-of-spec hardware. Precision alignment is essential for proper operation. Your phone is not operating properly.

There’s nothing software related that would cause a 20% failure rate. You have the same software as tens of millions of others who are not having problems.

Why would you think others on a forum having the same problem is evidence of it not being a hardware problem?

it’s typical Apple they they remove a technology for something else they have been doing it for year and very successfully. Floppy disk was removed so was the DVD Drive, ports on the MacBooks are the recent things to go.
It is a little different, choosing to remove things (floppy, Superdrive, headphone jack, and being forced to remove things due to not being able to make a reliable Touch ID under the screen.

Plus, the design of the X was locked in November 2016
And you know this how?

No person in his right mind would pay $1,000.00 for a mobile device. I have loved iPhones ever since the 2G came out and have upgraded every year but decided to skip this year not because money is the issue, but because I'm just not able to justify to myself spending a grand for a new cellphone.
Let’s be honest here. These aren’t cellphones, These are computers. I’m a small business owner and my phone is my lifeline. I email, do quotes, make business calls etc daily. I upgrade to a new phone yearly because it’s a tool for success for my business. To me, spending $1000 is a business investment that helps me make money. So to say no person in their right mind is simply wrong.

According to people who would actually know, who work at Apple. As opposed to unsourced, clickbait rumors. But in your tinfoil hat world, why would you believe that?

I guess you would if you’ve ever worked in product development, and knew that going from a locked design to volume production of tens of millions of units in less than a year is damn near impossible—yet Apple pulls it off every year.

I wonder how much is impacted by availability as well as the various promotions that carriers have offered. It is easy to imagine people were swayed to an 8 or an 8+ when they could walk out with one in-hand instead of waiting for shipment, plus I know AT&T was running a BOGO on the 8 lines because my parents got new phones that way.

Would be far more curious to see the trendline over one year of sales instead of a narrow slice.
