Apple's iPhone 16 lineup will not see the return of Touch ID fingerprint authentication technology, a new report claims.

Touch-ID-Fingerprint-Sensor-Under-Display-Feature-2.jpg

The information comes from an integrated circuit expert on Weibo with a track record for sharing information about Apple's plans. In a new post, they explained that most of the equipment originally used to manufacture the chips required for the iPhone's version of Touch ID has apparently now been permanently shut down, with the only remaining units used for the third-generation iPhone SE, suggesting that Apple has no plans to resurrect Touch ID as a method to authenticate on the iPhone in the immediate future. It is also worth pointing out that there are no noteworthy rumors about the return of Apple's fingerprint scanning technology for the iPhone 16 lineup that are still dependable.

Reports suggest that the fourth-generation iPhone SE will feature Face ID, replacing the last iPhone model that still features Touch ID. Even so, rumors persist that Apple is working on under-display fingerprint technology that could debut around 2026 – the same time frame that the company is ostensibly planning to move Face ID under the display of the device.

The Weibo source was first to report that the iPhone 14 would retain the A15 Bionic chip, with the A16 being exclusive to the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro models. They recently said that the chip designed for the upcoming iPhone 16 and ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus will be made using a distinct manufacturing process, differing fundamentally from the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro, to reduce production costs.

Rightly so, Face ID is far superior!
They should concentrate on more important features, like all lenses having 48 mega pixels and a much better battery tech,

It doesn't work for you, but always worked fantastically for me and continues to on my personal and work Macs and my iPad.

I don't get why people are so against touch ID coming back ALONGSIDE FaceID - would give everyone the ability to use the tech they want.

I miss Touch ID even 2.5 years into owning a TouchID iPhone.
Would you be happy to lose battery capacity to get the Touch ID as well?

excellent point and well summarized imo...

benefit to whom? customers? not so sure the tech companies are so driven by customer benefit anymore, more so by company benefit imo

bingo for me too

helmets with face id, gloves with touch id, on and on, each have their limitations, but see Octavius8 post

lol =P someone is "touchy" about the subject (couldn't resist =)

no...

many great points made already... and both have their uses and limitations of course, but for me...

as for quickest... wife and i have tested by racing to unlock to homescreen with the phones laying flat on a table and... touch id is quicker every time, one press and your in, instead of pick up, tap (without raise to wake active), then swipe... sheesh, who has time to wait that extra second =P

as for convenience and security... touch id imo is much more flexible and secure... can unlock without even picking up the phone, with it flat on a table, at odd angles, quick and easy with one touch instead of pick up, tap, swipe... as for security, interestingly, at a café recently when a young girl wanted to use mom's phone, mom kept refusing... the kid grabs the phone and places it in front of mom's face for a split second then runs off lol... not so easy with touch id...
I've used both and I don't recognise what you describe.

I don't see how these two things are related.
Of course the equipment for making home buttons with Touch ID has been shut down. Nobody expected those to ever come back.
The rumors were all about under-screen Touch ID (or perhaps power buttons with Touch ID). If those come out, that old equipment would still be shut down, because they'd be manufactured completely differently.
Samsung makes touchID buttons, it wouldn't be a stretch for Apple to buy them, since they buy everything else for their phones.

Very sad, it's painfully obvious that FaceID and TouchID would be great complements to each other. There are multiple times per day, every day that FaceID fails for me, same case when I had a TouchID iPhone. With both together there would be close to 0 authentication failures for me on a daily basis, the ability overlap would be close to perfect.

I would have loved Touch ID during the masks era. Face ID was awful to use, even when they implemented mask detection. And I believe mask detection would sacrifice like half of the security of Face

It’s the other way round for me.Touch ID would never work for me and still doesn’t on the keyboard of my MacBook and iMac.Fortunately,I can use my Apple Watch to unlock with them.Face ID works every time for me, far superior.
I used Touch ID up until iPhone 7, worked fine for me, though not perfect (then again what is) at that time I was completely against Face ID, until I got my 12 Pro, now I would never go back to it!
In my opinion the die hard Touch ID fans on here, have actually never used Face ID 😏

FaceID is different. It isn’t superior from a user perspective. As you can see from the thread, there are many reasonable arguments in favor of TouchID.

Personally, I prefer the finger print reader. FaceID forces me to hold the phone and angle it towards my face. There are many situations in which I don’t want to pick it up but do want to unlock it. The idea that it unlocks whenever you look at it just not true.

Regardless, it’s clearly a personal preference which one you prefer. Having both would be ideal.

And bring back 3D Touch.

I want TouchID, 3D Touch, bezels, Lightning port, HEADPHONE JACK, non-OLED display, physical SIM, SD slot, removable battery, flush camera bump, rounded edges, with A17, 48hr battery life, all wrapped up in a jet black package. Get on it, Tim!

I love having 30,000 laser beams shot directly into my face every time I pick up the phone.
That is the number-one reason why I still use an iPhone with Touch ID. No one knows the long-term effects of having tens of thousands of laser dots shined into the eyes many times on a daily basis.

Apple wouldn’t use an off the shelf button in their phone. They rely on others to manufacture, but they set their own specifications and do their own engineering especially for things like user facing buttons.

Not sure the other poster is correct about Touch ID manufacturing being shut down though, we still have it on Macs.

I can dash your opinion. I'm a die hard TouchID fan and upgraded my 6S to a 12 Pro in 2020. I'd go back to TouchID in an instant if I were able to.

No way, I have an iPhone 14Pro, and every iPhone before that mostly. I have touchid on my android phone, and yes, I have both, one for work and one for me. I prefer touchid as it works better for me, but don't think for an instant I haven't used faceid. This latest OS update have made FaceID work a LOT less often for some reason. Maybe just 50% of the time, the rest I have to key in my pin, which I consider unsecure and a total pita.

I would prefer the choice of both in an iPhone, but my android phone does have both and I only use touchid, so who knows...

So not a problem. It's not rocket science after all, it's well known tech.

And I use it on my Macs. (A mini Pro and a 27"iMac) It's quite handy not to have to key in the password. I don't think the poster was talking from any knowledge point, just hate of touchid. (for some reason)
