Was definitely not expecting to see Touch ID/ under the screen Touch ID to make a comeback any time in the near future

I do wish Touch ID would make a comeback. I miss being able to unlock my phone without worrying about the level of sunlight, if I am looking at the phone just the right way, or in dim lighting. I could unlock the phone without picking it up off the desk and making eye contact to just see an alert or dismiss a reminder.

What are you talking about? Face ID even works in pitch black darkness due to how Apple implemented the feature, with infra-red part of the design.

Still not a huge fan of faceid. Leaning over the counter to unlock my phone or having to pick it up if I’m relaxing on the couch and want to open it.

id assume everyone would want a full screen phone and that’s why I’d rather have Touch ID back instead of Face ID. Never was a fan of the notch or the island. One day we’ll get there one way or the other

I'm not sure how missed it is. During covid, yes but now?
Weirdly my Mum would be the perfect burglar, she has no finger prints on a few fingers so touchID never worked for her. FaceID is of course fine.

Because it’s a waste of money and resources to have two different unlock mechanisms.

Put me in the camp of people who say Touch ID is useless. It never worked for me and I just disabled it.

I disagree. There are plenty of scenarios and situations where Face ID is useless for me. Each to their own.

There are plenty of things that are a waste of money for the iPhone to have. There are three different charging mechanisms for example.

To be honest Face ID has got really good so not sure how much Touch ID is needed , on my 12 pro max it wasn’t too effective in the dark and many other scenarios it was intermittent! On my 15 pro max it seems to unlock well even in pitch darkness

How long will it take for them to give up on the failed FaceID technology? Its limited use cases mean that 90% of the time, I must take some cumbersome action to get FaceID to work (stop drinking, stop yawning, stop talking, pick up the phone, turn the camera towards my face, swipe up to try again after failure, etc). TouchID just works. The first time. Every time. In my pocket. On my desktop. At a pay-point. etc.
It just works.

You’re drinking, yawning, and talking for a solid 21.6 hours each day, huh? That must be a pretty miserable life you live.

TouchID doesn’t work if you just got out of the shower and your hands are damp. It doesn’t work if you’ve just gotten out of the pool and your hands are damp. It doesn’t work if you’re cooking a meal and you have food on your hands. It doesn’t work if you’re doing some household repair and get grease on your hands. It doesn’t work if you’re a person who has sweaty palms. There are MANY situations where TouchID doesn’t “just work.”

And for people who have FaceID fail on them multiple times a day— reset your FaceID and start over. That’s not normal.

The "something superior" to FaceID is TouchID.
There is a phenomenon known as “sometimes because”. That means because a new tech is not superior to an older tech in every single way, the new tech is deemed to be inferior.

Face ID beats Touch ID in most scenarios and is the better tech overall taking the negatives into account as well. IMO.

as for convenience and security... touch id imo is much more flexible and secure... can unlock without even picking up the phone, with it flat on a table, at odd angles, quick and easy with one touch instead of pick up, tap, swipe... as for security, interestingly, at a café recently when a young girl wanted to use mom's phone, mom kept refusing... the kid grabs the phone and places it in front of mom's face for a split second then runs off lol... not so easy with touch id...

This thing worries me about security, any one can pick up your phone point it towards your face and it will unlock it and then run away with it.

Face ID may be replaced in the future with something superior, like retinal scanning. As mentioned above “sometimes because”, people will two glass eyes won’t be able to use retinal scanning.

If Face ID doesn’t work for you, you are not in the majority of people who Face ID does work for. Touch ID just doesn’t work for others every time. Wet hands, dirty Hands, cold hands, etc.

Not really. First try it with a friend or family, exactly what you are suggesting. Second turn on attention aware features.

If you are referring to assault, thats a whole different level and presumably one would give up anything if a gun was pointed to their head.

But a casual grab by an unknown assailant, I would think an assailant that tried that you woul swat away the phone. Second you can lock down the phone so sensitive areas are protected. Turn on a screen time password and turn off access to location, sharing, accounts and passwords. There are other things that can be done, but that isn’t what this thread is about.

To be honest here I owned a galaxy s10 , if we ever needed Touch ID I rather have it on the power button and not in touch screen

But more importantly, will they bring back the 30 pin port?
Joking aside, I did like how fingerprint was faster at unlocking my phone; but was anyone really expecting it to come back?
