what the hell are you talking about? the iphone was the first ever 100% touch smartphone in great color and with multimedia as the center of the telephone.

It is not a candybar…

Actually, no, the first all touchscreen smartphone would be the LG Prada. It beat the iPhone by a couple months.

Considering all RIM does are a line of Blackberry phones:

Net income ▲ $2.457 billion (2010)

How does that stack up with Apple's iPhone division? I bet it's not too far off! :D

Depends whether Zombie Farm or having a useful piece of hardware is *your* priority.

Speaking of ridiculous, it's clear the iPhone is only good for juvenile games while the BB is a serious business machine (RIM talking point: check!).

Explain me why BB enterprise users need all the fancy multimedia features of an iPhone/Android? The BB is a serious phone for doing mostly 2 things - calendar/email and doesn't break easily.
Sure? I'll put one in my blender; video coming up :D Just kidding... though I love those videos.

Exactly. If they weren't targeting "regular" consumers, then why bother releasing the OS6 teaser that was more media based? And the announcement/press conference today continuously highlighted their "improved" media features, social networking feeds, etc.

If BB was satisfied with just being corporate, I doubt they'd have much focus on those consumer features today.

You can look at the liveblog of the event.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/03/live-from-rim-and-atandamp-ts-blackberry-torch-event/

BlackBerries were always business orientated devices. The only reason they ever caught on with the consumer is because they were one of the first fully featured smart phones. They caught on because there wasn't much choice. Now you have Apple's iOS and Android which are both much more consumer friendly and people are making the switch.

RIM knows it has to continue to be a player in the consumer market if it is going to be successful, but it is becoming harder and harder for them.

It's hardly just a talking point when you look at RIM's market share and profits.

Here's where you are right and here's where you are wrong.

The phone itself is nothing to marvel. And personally - I hate sliding phones - they are horrible to operate. The phone while in competition with the iPhone is also not in competition. Let me explain on where some of you are wrong in your thinking.

If a user is deciding between and iPhone and a Blackberry - no doubt the iPhone would win. But there's an assumption there. That the user is comparing.

As someone who went through several blackberries before switching to the iPhone 3GS (yes - even with the iPhone out - I didn't switch for a few years) I can say that it's very exciting when Blackberry releases a new phone and OS improvements. Just like it is when you have an iPhone and see new OS improvements and new features on a phone.

So if you're in the blackberry camp (or if you're forced to be because your company's IT is blackberry not iPhone supportive) then this phone is the next great thing.

Say what to you want. In comparison - perhaps it "fails." - but in the other world of Blackberries - it's a great phone no doubt.

My .02

It really comes down to what you are looking for. For example the screen resultion on the iPhone4 is pretty much over kill. Is it nice hell yes. Is it that much nicer than the iPhone 3GS. Not really. Nicer yes but not this HUGE difference over the 3GS.

I will agree the 9800 screen specs is a pretty poor in todays world. I would of hope for something a little higher but RIM might not of wanted to fork out the cash to go to the same res PPI as the iPhone4 for very marginal gains.

As for choosing a phone. Blackberry is by far a better communications device than the iPhone and Android phones. But it multimedia part sucks.

I like my blackberry and when I replace it I am thinking about Android but giving up Blackberry great push email, hardware keyboard and messaging device is hard. This phone I can see as being a great tool to stop the bleed of those users jumping ship because it gives them more of what they like from Android/iPhone. That is a larger touch screen and a slightly more media things.

Leaving blackberry means you give up the gold standard in push email and hardware keyboards.

well let's hope those who still like berries will eat this up. i'll stick with iOS.

Forgive my iPhone bias on the MacRumors website. I spoke too generally. You are right. My point is the same as yours though. And it's ignorant for anyone to intimate that RIM is dead or will die anytime soon by using marketshare as a means of determining its fate.

There's always going to be bias but to write off a company with a third marketshare simply because their products don't perform in the same way as a competitors is ridiculous.

In fact if BB did go into direct competition with Apple... then I would say you had a valid point: they WOULD be finished.

It's not that bad. It's just not iPhone. Relax. It definitely is much better than what it was.

The Torch will launch exclusively on AT&T, Apple's exclusive partner for the iPhone, on August 12th and will be priced at $199 with a two-year contract.

RIM launches on AT&T eh? Does anyone else think Apple's iphone exclusivity contract with AT&T is one-sided? How come Apple is not allowed to go to AT&T's competitors, while darth-AT&T ends up working with Apple's competitors? I smell double standards.

/end rant from a guy who is on at&t and gets 4 dropped calls on avg per day.

I think you're misunderstanding me again. I am NOT saying there should be a comparison. I'm also not saying that RIM is in trouble or anything like that. OTHERS are.

Yep, this really is PhoneRumors now.

Really though, I mean, a BB on the front page? Really?

I can understand Android phones/devices-- they actually pose some competition to the iDevices; but RIM and BlackBerry OS? Hardly.

An iPhone 3G blows this "new" phone out of the water; a bad move for RIM.

well gee - if you take some of the posters in here seriously you'd say that the blackberry isn't a competitor ;)

Are you suggesting that ATT ONLY carry iPhones? That would be ridiculous.

RIM make decent stuff, but I'm happy with my iPhone 4.

Why does it have an optical nav button when it has a full touch screen?

You obviously have not seen one for yourself. The difference is huge. Screen resolution makes a huge difference; it's not about being nicer. I can read webpages without zooming in, and my email looks better than it does on a computer.

I'm not normally one to go picking at the opinions of others when it comes to matters that are usually subjective. However this is just inaccurate. Steve may lay the hype on thick when it comes to new products, but when it comes to the display on the i4 he was dead straight.

I went from perfectly satisfied with the 3GS screen to wondering how I lived without the i4 display in a matter of seconds. Reading books, browsing, watching movies, etc... is almost like a different experience now.

Does it need more? Have you used one? What would the added power bring?

A lot of posts (like yours) are funny to me. As if putting down the competition makes you feel better about your iPhone. You don't have to put down something else to enjoy what you have.

For the BlackBerry Apps... probably not much. Since they have very outdated API's. And it just feels like the OS is lagging in today's times.
However, if you wanna hang with the iPhone or an Android phone, a faster processor would be good. Especially if you're expected to keep the phone for two years.

Agreed - say all you want (younger generation) about electronic media. But experts know that you get a far richer range with a record vs. mp3.

Growing up in the 90's, I feel I'm apart of the mp3 generation, but I have to buy my favorite albums on vinyl. Just can't beat the quality.
