I get it, you can't make promises because some customers will have a tantrum right in the middle of the Apple Store, so in no way am I blaming employees for the whole "We dont know what models are arriving. They just show up." line. But when your CEO has earned the reputation of being the "Logistics King" and Apple Store's are the most finely tuned retail outlets in the world then are we really supposed to believe that they don't know what exactly is coming in Todays shipment?

I'm just saying that it would be nice to walk into the store and be told "Psst. We dont expect your Gold 5s for a few weeks so don't bother monitoring the site and waking up at 3A every night to check". :D

Just checked the online inventory checker for 20 stores in the FL / GA area. It's 9am EST. There was only 1 64gb Grey 5s available for Verizon in this area. No silver of any kind, no gold in either ATT or Verizon.

Anyway, I picked up my wifes Best Buy 5s Silver preorder so now we have two subsidized phones but it's going back because of BB and their crooked tax/pricing.

Apple Store (Nevada)
$30 - Sales Tax off subsidized price

Best Buy (Nevada)
$80 - Sales Tax off their inflated retail price of $800

Thats $50 more for no explainable reason so I'm going to use it and keep checking the Apple site only because I'd rather support Apple than Best Buy. (Plus, I like money.)

So let me get this straight. You pay tax on a subsidized phone at the unsubsidized price? If yes, two other questions.

First, what is Best Buy's rationale for doing this when you complain? Second, is this only in Nevada, or is it all over the place?

Yeah, from what I can see stock has been very tight towards the end of this week. There seemed to be loads around at the start of the week. Let's hope they replenish for next week.

It has to do with how some states treat sales taxes on items sold with a manufacturer's rebate/coupons. Since the retailer is receiving the full retail price in the end, the sales tax collected is on the full retail price, sans rebate.

Depending on the arrangement and the state, I can see how the Apple store and the 3rd party retailer sales tax can be different.

Ya... I have a feeling they are selling to those early morning stand in line people or the employees are hoarding the "in demand" one for themselves or friends....

I walked into a store yesterday to mess around while the wife was shopping. As I'm standing there, a rep brings out a 5s for a lady next to me.
I found that interesting, because neither the app or the website have shown any inventory at thy store since the beginning of the week.

Maybe she had hers shipped to a store? I know that you can do that with Macs and the like, especially if your having them engraved or added onto etc.

I placed an order for in-store pick-up at the beginning of the week when there was some inventory available, but didn't pick it up until last night. The sales rep told us they had none in stock for people who didn't buy online.

This lady was 65+..I'm pretty sure she wasn't up at midnight putting in her order, or savvy enough to snag one for in store pickup during the short window they were available earlier this week, but who really knows.

So granny has her phone, but mine is still sitting Korea waiting to be shipped..I can't help but be a little pissed

I now officially the world's biggest loser.

So finally a 64 gb Space gray AT&T becomes available in my area. I order through the App Store app for pick up today. And I forget to check the button for store pick up and it gets processed as delivery. So I had to cancel the order, thus lost the iphone from inventory and now have to wait at least 24 hours for AT&T to release me for my upgrade.

If i just hit one button right. I'd be on my way right now.

Wasn't meant to be...

Damn that hurts me
Many people are getting their upgrade status back ASAP after canceling their orders

anyone in the DMV area have any luck using the in-store pick up option?? it's impossible to find gold at&t!!! i've tried going to apple, target, walmart, best buy.. nothing :(

Check the stock app early morning, 1:30pm and around 4:30-5pm. That's when I've seen stock of gold.

YMMV, but when I got mine last week, I walked into the Apple Store literally 10 minutes after it said "Unavailable for pick-up" online. I said screw it, checked for myself, and they had one gold 32gb available. This was at 5:30 PM. I don't know though, some people are saying you can't do that, but at my local store it worked for me.

I went in today to ask and their reasoning for taxing full price on a subsidized phone was "It's required by law to tax on the full value and all the stores do it. Apple chooses to tax on the subsidized price and they eat the difference" so the guy had an answer ready and it will probably take some research to find out if its actually true. As for asking "Why do you charge $800 when MSRP is $750" and he sighed and said "I have no idea".

I stayed up until about 4AM trying to get my hands on a Tmobile device. It came up in inventory a few times around 2AM, but too quickly for me to grab it. As someone mentioned before, this has got to be the most I've ever worked to give away my money.

At least you saw some, I havent seen a gold in So Cal in 5 days

Excuse me!! What a jerk!

A little...or should I say a lot...too prejudiced about "old" people, aren't you? I am 66 and posting this on my new iphone 5s which I snagged on the first day of in store pick up. I had ordered at 3 am on Sept. 20 but cancelled that order when the in store pick up became available. This granny has a silver iphone and you are a jerk.

Got FINALLY my Gold iPhone... and I have to say that now I feel kinda dumb for putting this much effort into getting a color. The gold is okay but in the end it's (debatably) not as nice as the Silver or Black. It's just different.

Apple definitely is the king of Hype :D

Sorry granny but I'm just speaking from experience. My parenta are the same age, and cant even program the sprinkler system.

Good for you that you got your phone, you are more of the exception than the standard. No need to take offense and start calling names
