11am - 1115am and 3pm-315pm worked like a charm yesterday. 11am - 115am this morning was also live, but as of 321pm PST. No updates.

Any speculations?

Was just at an Apple store trying to pick up a phone I ordered earlier today, and they told me that some server critical to the in-store pickup process is down right now and they're unable to complete any orders. I imagine this is what you're seeing also. :(

Has anyone been able to purchase an ATT or Verizon model without going through the contract setup process?

I've decided to wait in queue tomorrow morning at an Apple store, but I suspect they won't have many or any unlocked phones available. In that case, it would be good to just nab one of those.

I currently am an ATT customer, but on a Go Phone plan, if that makes any difference. From what I gather most people set up a 2-year contract?

Didn't you reply to a post I made earlier saying that it wasn't possible?

Interesting. I was at the apple store earlier today doing a return. I did try to add items to cart but never chose to pick up in store nor did I complete the transaction... So I'm not sure why I am receiving that message.

WTF? the services are all down..
Apple store says: "We'll be coming back"
Is someone knows whats going on?

I can confirm that yes you can purchase a phone device only without going through any contract or activation process. So yes go down in the morning and you should be able to get your unlocked, device only phone, if they have them in stock.

I finally managed to get a phone this morning - so relieved. After 5 trips to the Apple store, they finally had one of the ones I wanted in stock. I think I was quite lucky as the Shadyside store in Pittsburgh never had a queue in the mornings for the past week or so. So I've been the only person showing up around 8am looking for a phone. I had been told previously at the store that they only sell device only phones between 8-10am. Yesterday I noticed that a ton of Gold Verizon phones started popping up in all the surrounding stores, so this morning when I woke up I did a quick check and the online system said they had gold Verizon 32Gb in stock. I rushed down to the store, but the employees said they had no stock. I told them that it said they did online, so one of them went back and discovered they had 1 Gold 32Gb and 2 Gold 16Gb Verizon phones.

I'm on T-Mobile myself, but as everyone has been saying if you buy a AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile phone device only from the Apple store it will come unlocked and activated.

Good luck to everyone else still looking for phones!

Tuesday afternoon I was finally able to order an iPhone 5s. I used personal pickup in the Apple Store App and selected the Apple Store at International Plaza in Tampa. I received the email that it was ready about an hour later. I skip dinner and make the hour long drive to the store and they begin to process my order but it will not go through for some reason. Apparently some server was down system wide and they couldn't process any iPhone orders. The guy tells me to wait around for a while and maybe it will come back up.

I sat in my car for an hour because I don't feel like spending another two hours driving back and forth tomorrow. I go back in and they are still having the same issue. I waited around for another hour to see if the system would come back up and still nothing. So basically I wasted 4 hours of my life between driving and waiting around, not to mention the gas, and went home empty handed with no phone for tomorrow.

Does it seem absurd to anyone else that the iPhone is there, I am there, I already paid for it but because of some stupid glitch in their system I can't get it? You would think they would offer people a gift card for wasting their time but all I got was sorry try again tomorrow.

Hopefully this issue is solved because I found a phone available for pick up. It a little bit of a drive for me to get it .. I wouldn't wanna waste any time if the system is still down

I was finally able to reserve a 32GB gold AT&T at 5:30am! Only thing is my friend a few states over is going to have to pick it up for me, haha.

No big deal, I'm glad this is over. Apple really dropped the ball with these supply issues.

Thought I'd share my story for the benefit of those who are wondering how a device-only purchase can be done without having to wait in an early-morning line. After a couple of weeks of trying, I was able to pick up a 32GB in Gold at the Georgetown Apple Store in DC. I happened to check the Personal Pickup section of the Apple web site, and jumped on it when I saw that the phone I wanted was available.

I did have to jump through the somewhat annoying hoop of placing an order for a new line of VZ service. When I showed up at the store and the employee retrieved my order, I explained that upon further consideration I wanted to purchase the phone device-only. He took it in stride; I was clearly not the only person he'd assisted with this kind of transaction.

As I'd hoped he would do, the employee explained that he would have to return the phone at the subsidized price, and then sell it back to me at the full, unsubsidized retail price. It added maybe 5 minutes to the transaction time as he had to handle a couple of more steps, print and explain receipts, etc. But I was able to walk out the door with a device-only phone that same day without any real trouble.

As for the line of service: the employee said that the service would likely not be activated since I returned the phone without going through the activation process-- but he recommended calling Verizon to be sure. When I called, the representative confirmed that they had no record of an active line of service in my name.

One thing to note when doing this is that your credit was ran which could have an impact on your credit score.

can't use upgrade?

anyone has been having issues with cancelling their order, and have their upgrade being reversed? i returned an iphone 5s saturday because there was an issue with it, they obviously did not have a replacement for it, so i decided to place an order sunday and cancelled monday to see if i could score one using in store pick up, well, i tried to do this yesterday, and saw gold ones available in hingham, but when i tried to get it, i got an error saying "you account cannot be upgrade, visit your local att store" i called att three times, and they said, someone has to reverse my upgrade manually?

anyone has experienced this before? the first time my upgrade was reversed right away, so not sure what is going on.

Finally some gold became available today in FL. Happened about 2:10pm. Got one reserved (32gb) for Jacksonville. Waiting on confirmation email, though.....Ugh, what a screwed up launch this has been....:D

Wow. Can't get a T-Mobile version for anything. Seriously. Apple must be making a killing off the poor and cheap by profiting from selling contracts.

It's completely impossible to get an unlocked iPhone 5s in NYC. The few that showed up just now, sold out in a few seconds. My freaking online order hasn't moved at all either.

First world problem is a real problem. Those of us with disposable income are the ones that are getting burned.
