The supply Vs demand game is always interesting. Porsche used to be very good at it too, limiting stock helped keep the residuals high, whilst demand for the product remained high. Thing is, over time, people get bored of waiting and will start seeking alternatives. It also allows time for competitors to up their game.

Nobody limits supply to a quarter of what they could have sold if they hadn't limited the supply. You explain why in the last two sentences of your post. Apple didn't get to where it is by being stupid.

What game is that exactly? I would think the only game Apple wants to play is selling as much product as possible. Kind of hard to sell something if its out of stock.

Agreed. This notion that Apple plans on increasing sales by shipping 10% of the numbers they could sell is just stupid.

Well I don't think the demand for the retina will be as high as the original launch. The $299 version will sell like hotcakes this holiday season, however. (IMO)

Presumably, Apple won't have the decency to inform customers that stock will be limited, instead advising them to try our stores on a first come, first served basis.

Now I'm not sure what lesson Tim Cook said he learned from last years 27" iMac debacle. The retina mini didn't need to be announced if it's not going to be reasonably available. The air is almost as light & only $100 more. Seems Apple would be better off just having announced a cut in the mini price & launched the retina mini in March.

One of which might be the iPad Air.

I don't think Apple is deliberately holding back. Remember, launch supplies have always been tight (with the notable exceptions of the 3rd iPad, iPad 4, and original iPad mini - all of which sold well). Apple is a company where the designers win out over the engineers. They are always testing the limits of production capabilities.

No one has attempted a tablet with the PPI of the iPad mini with a screen that large. Only the Nexus 7 comes close, and the iPad mini's screen is 43% larger. So for every 70 screens Apple can have produced, Google can have 100. That's pretty significant.

No, it is deliberate. Apple can't deliver on its promise. But announces new products anyway to boost investor confidence, satisfy shareholders, and raise its stock price while leaving consumers out on a limb.

It sounds some kind of maketing tactics. If you just do not prepare for large volume production, why wouldn't you put the conferrence a while back, this seems much reasonable.

not. no company wants to *not* sell devices it makes good profit on. selling is how they *make* money.

theyre supply constrained because everybody wants their stuff and they dont come out of thin air.

'Ridiculously Tight' seems to be the new theme for product release(s) over the last year +
iMac
iPad
iPad mini
iPhone

Channel inventory / supply chain is supposedly someone's strength at Apple

yep, thats how you measure success -- wild sell-outs in days or hours. more people want apple products today than ever before. run-away, amazing success. producing the goods takes time...iphones, ipads, macbooks, macs...enormous volumes of inventory. they all require resources, facilities, time. they do not come off of trees.

no other company is shipping so many desired items. thus...supply constraint.

Where is the A7X?

Right here!

Sorry. I couldn't resist. Haha.

Seriously, though. The A7 should be plenty.

This will just push more holiday gift-givers to purchase the higher margin iPad Air in order to give thier loved-ones the latest and greatest. Seems like they are trying to make sure the full size iPad retains the flagship status.

I do not think that it was intentional to have tight supply in this instance, just poor logistics on the part of Apple. That, or no control over screen supply.

I believe that Apple had to stick to the usually scheduled timescale of the iPad update / release pattern. It has worked hard now to separate iPhone, iPad, iMac etc, launches over a year and had no intention of messing this up just to satisfy it's customers....

The result is, that this is not good for any conscious purchaser having to wait unit after the new year for a new iPad.

For example, they announced the new iPad in October (which is when it should be released), if the news is to be true, then most customers have to wait until January or February 2014.

That is 3-4 months into the [12 month] life cycle of the announced product, which they will invariably update again in October 2014.

Anybody who says it does not matter, does not appreciate the self imposed short shelf life of technology Apple now build's into it's ecosystem and did not buy the iPad 3 (as I did), to have a new release just 6 months later.

I am happy to buy a 128GB, cellular iPad mini to replace my WIFI only, but if I cannot get it before Christmas, I will wait until the next release.

Once bitten, twice shy...

I hate this too. Some people would try to make profit from that. It doesn't seem they ready to sell but just to let people delay from buying other brands.

More likely than not, the reality is that they wanted to release both new iPads on November 1st and hit a snag on the Mini. Thus, we get a nebulous "late november" estimate.

How is this a marketing tactic? Isn't it just reality? Don't you think they would sell on Nov. 1st if they could? Or do you mean to suggest that they should have scheduled a second iPad event to announce just the iPad Mini by itself?

Of course the negative nancies will keep spouting this "its intentional" nonsense without grasping a serious sense of reality.

Name one other company that can have prepared enough supply to sell millions and millions of product using brand new technology and production processes, and still be in "short supply."

The fact is that Apple is simply a marvel of very low tolerance, very complex manufacturing in VERY large numbers. No other company on Earth can manufacture products in numbers close to Apple that use the same assembly processes, the same aerospace-grade precision, with cutting edge components. And yet, of course its not good enough. Apples manufacturing abilities already defy logic, and yet people still accuse them of "marketing tactics." Sheesh, people are just so self-centered and entitled these days.
LOL !!! This is truly hilarious...

Excuse you, you're FUDing all over this thread.

In a totally unrelated post: I thought Samsung stopped paying people to post nonsense.

We say that now, but had Apple not announced a retina mini all the stories would be how come Google, Amazon etc. can produce high res 7" tablets but Apple can't. I don't think going another 5-6 months without retina would've been any better.

Extremely disappointed. :( Sold my iPad 2 in anticipation of the event, been waiting for the Retina Mini for a very long time

Same boat as you. Sold my iPad 2 32GB for a surprising $300 cash from Craigslist, was hoping to be pre-ordering a Retina Mini tonight at midnight, instead looks like I'll be waiting a whole month. Thankfully I can use my girlfriends old Mini while I wait but it really sucks not having your own games, accounts(Mail, Notes, Reminders, Bookmarks etc.), books.

Whether it was intentional or not they got me to at least go to look at the iPad Air on Nov. 1st which I wouldn't have done if I could have had the option to pre-order both tonight. Would have just gotten the Mini.
