rMini Image Retention Problem-Tested

I had a week 48 that was perfect in terms of screen colour and IR. Sadly it had debris between the glass and the LCD. The one I have now is near perfect in terms of screen and but has IR which I don't notice in normal use. So given this is number 5 it's staying.

Both of mine were LQ. I don't know if we can find post week 47 for the moment... That's why I'm waiting until january.
Did you keep it or returned it ?

I still have it but I'll be returning it.

Is this an LTE ?

Even if you don't notice IR in normal use now, you could regret in a few month when the issue will getting worst over time... And it will be too late for an exchange... That's what happened to me with a macbook pro. That's why I'm waiting some weeks before trying to get another one after 2 returns...

Which model is it ?
And which week the new one (with IR) has been made ?

16GB cellular grey and a week 47 Pegatron with the good screen and the IR. If it gets worse or if I start to notice or I'll book a Genius Bar appointment and I expect they'll replace it.

I need an iPad and this one is just fine in terms of normal use. It's a real lottery getting a decent one with yellowing, IR and debris under the glass. That said, I picked up a Nexus 7 on Saturday and it has a yellow band at the bottom and the Kindle Fire HDX has a blue band at either side.

So I think we're at the point where market forces are driving down the pricing and quality is starting to suffer. Most tablet customers won't really care or even notice these things.

For those who are still curious,

Got the 16gb wifi space gray (DLXLQ wk47), didn't check if there was yellow tint but there was image retention after testing for 5 minutes or so.

It didn't really bother me, however I wanted larger capacity and so 2 weeks later (because they were out of stock everywhere), went to exchange for a 32gb (DLXLN wk45), same colour/model. Has the slightest hint of yellow on the bottom left corner, tested on a solid black background at full brightness. As for image retention, tested for 10min on full brightness and nothing odd on the gray screen :)

So week 47 seems to be definitly the week of image retention...

Mine is Week 49 (December). With no yellowing, no backlight bleeding, no dead pixels, no dust under screen, no gray blobs on the screen and no retention issues.

I'm really very happy now after coming from multiple iPad Air and rMini exchanges. Got this from BestBuy.

They are out there boys and girls!

Awesome, was this a rMini Wifi or LTE?

Glad you got a good one, I'm still waiting to see if anyone around got an LTE version without any ir.

I'm sure you'll be able to find one. Apple seems to have taken note of the problem and rectified later production batches...at least this is what my unit is making me believe. :)

I'm in the same case. After 2 returns (LTE/128), I'm waiting until january... When do you plan to buy yours ?

I think that would the best bet going for anything manufactured in mid to late January. Then again there really isn't any confirmation that all the rMinis will solely be manufactured by Samsung and that all the display issues will be fixed at LG and Sharp.

Don't hesitate. Go for a remplacement until you get a perfet screen. The retention issue is getting worst over time. I recommand you a refund in order to wait a couple of week before getting a new one, in order to pick your ipad in another stock shipping... That's what I've done after 2 defective screen (image retention) on the 128G/LTE/White model. I returned them both yesterday and now I'm waiting until the end of the month...

Are you talking about the Marco Arment test (which is not an Apple test) ?
If it's the case, the link is here :

http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html

So I am now on my 3rd Retina iPad Mini. The third one I got suffers from NASTY image retention. I launched the App Store, left it there for about 4 minutes, switched to the Kindle App (it has a gray and clean splash screen when it launches) and you could clearly see the App Store in the background.

It's a shame, I absolutely love the mini, it's perfect, but issues like this are a disappointment. I will go back today and hopefully get a refund.

You don't really need to run the test any longer than 30 seconds to detect it, so you can try doing it in the store. I'm guessing yours was an LTE as well?

Yup, 64GB LTE T-Mobile.

Before I get there I'm going to leave it on the screen for about 10 minutes though, I want to make sure it's obvious (even though it is really apparent) to the Apple employee so I don't get any lip about returning it.

Maybe it's to early to find a LTE with no image retention... How many swap is it possible to do at apple store ? It's a real lotery...

Does anyone with the iPad Air show image retention? Mine shows signs of it after 2-3 minutes of running the test, but only in the right 1/3 of the screen.

Should I be concerned? I bought it new off of craigslist so I don't think returns or exchanges to Apple store is an option...

Other than the IR, the screen is near perfect. What should I do?? :(

I just want to add some perspective here, and I realize this is just my opinion, but I started to grow really concerned about the image retention issue because I wasn't sure if it could/might cause problems for me down the line. A previous poster had mentioned that it did cause problems for a Macbook Pro, so I was convinced I needed to replace mine.

However, just to make sure I understood the implications, I ran the image retention test on my iPad 3, which I love and have had no issues with what so ever. Low and behold, the iPad 3 had the same issues, which I never noticed in any real world usage for the last 2 years. Moreover, I also notice that the screen uniformity isn't absolutely perfect either. So for the past 2 years, I've been using an iPad without issue that some folks on this board would say is defective. Additionally, I never felt my iPad was defective until I started reading these forums.

So for those of you who need to verify that your device is perfect, you will need to cycle through countless numbers of iPads to get the right one -- and it sounds like Apple knows how to deal with you. But if you want one of the new iPads, and when you use one it seems perfectly fine to you, don't worry about what some anal retentive person says on this board. Once I saw that my iPad 3 had some of the same issues, I confirmed that my concern was overblown and my perception is more important than any empirical test.

IR is getting worse over time. I had this issue with a macbook pro 2 years ago... Try an exchange if it's still time... My father bought an Air with no sign of IR after 10 minutes of running test. I returned 2 mini Retina because of IR after 30s...

Which ipad model was the IR getting worse for you? The rmini?

So ?

For folks who have experienced the gotcha of image retention problems, are you leaving something on the screen for an extended period of time without a screen saver (in the case of a computer) or auto-lock on? I'm just having a hard time understanding how image retention can become so problematic unless you are leaving content on the screen for a while.
