I just picked up my LTE Verizon 64 GB Mini Retina a week ago at an Apple Store - DLXLR serial#, Week 48 (Dec.) production (Foxconn), and the screen is absolutely perfect with no IR (that I can detect) and no yellowing issues at all. It's better than the iPad Air screen that I exchanged, which had a little of the "book spine" effect on the left side. I wonder if Apple has changed display suppliers on the later Mini production.

If my image retention was only evident on a test, I wouldn't care. I think that's a stupid way to gauge IR as well. However, experiencing IR in normal, everyday use is where I draw the line. It's extremely disappointing, especially considering I've never experienced this on an iPhone, iPad, ACD, or even my rMBP.

I'm most definitely not the kind of guy that goes looking for problems-- but the IR was evident after 30 seconds of reading.

Same case for me. IR evident after less than 30s of reading on 2 128/LTE models (week 47). I'm now waiting january, hoping a new production...

Based on what statistic ? 10-20 people here ? Over a few millions already sold ?
This is not statistic, this is a typical forum distortion of reality.

Well, at least the statistics for myself is 100% IR problem with LTE models. I've exchanged 2 LTE units with both ones showing IR so I returned it and got a Wifi only model instead - which is problem free and so are all those units (wifi only) in display at the local apple store...

Never seen something like that on any iPad I owned in real life ....
Your eyes, to be honest, have worst "image retention" issues than a display :D

Could you show me a video whit a real life case of image retention issue ?
If I ran the test, my new air and the previous 4 show retention.
In real life usage : ZERO.

This forum is capable of convincing people that their perfectly working device is faulty ....

This is my point. Until I started reading this thread and trying the test, I thought my iPad 3 was a perfectly working device. Of course, it failed the image retention test within a minute, and my rMini LTE shows some retention after 3 minutes of 100% brightness. More importantly, if I look at the test with my eyes for more than 30 seconds, I can see the test pattern ghosted in my vision whenever I look away. So is there a problem? I guess so, but in real world usage, I'd say it will take years before it can really affect day-to-day usage, and even then I'm not sure.

To be upset with it would assume that the device will be used indefinitely. While I would love that to be a common expectation for everything I buy, I think we all know that neither Apple nor should we expect that type of life expectancy. If you can get 3 iOS refreshes on a device before it becomes slow and buggy is probably typical, and I would think 3 - 4 years of use would warrant the price tag of an iPad with AppleCare, LTE, and sufficient internal space (32GB or higher). Of course you can use it longer than that, but to expect it to be operating perfectly without replacement of faulty or broken parts, like a screen, is probably unrealistic, or perhaps a bit juvenile. Bring on the Ralph Nader haters. Or better yet, the Steve Would Have Never Let This Happen naysayers.

This is an LCD IPS display, is not a plasma screen, so image retention isn't going to be worse over the time.

To play devil's advocate, one could make the argument that an iPad with IR would be more difficult to sell, or would result in a lower resale value if one were to sell their iPad before the 3-4 year mark.

Well, just got back from the Apple store, where I exchanged my LTE iPad Mini with IR. For whatever reason, the exchange process took upwards of 45 minutes. The woman that was helping me was really confused about the entire process, and even her manager was a little lost. Maybe I just caught them at a bad time.

My new Mini has IR, but it seems about 30-40% less severe than the unit I exchanged. I'm still not totally happy, but I'm going to hold onto this one and see if it continues to bother me in the coming months. If it does, I'll ask for another exchange once Apple has their act together.

I'm happy my new unit has a perfectly uniform screen and has no backlight bleeding-- two things my prior unit suffered from.

How can I detect the backlight bleeding ?

Yes ... Because there are a lot of people out here that check for IR before buying an used iPad ....

I know you hate IR inspecting people :)

Hate ? Noooo, it's just funny :D

I can imagine a lot of people here looking at the check board for 2 minutes and then screaming in pain: aaaargh, image retention !!!
Wait a minute, it's my eyes' retina to show image retention
I can see it on my white wall, on my fridge ..... Aaaargh.
:D

I'm going to go to the hospital to return my eyes: they clearly have ir issue. Do you think that 42 years is whitin return period ?

I understand you, I agree with you at so many points but I want to re-explain my point of view.

I pay 1600 TL(800 USD) for iPad mini retina 32 GB Cellular. I have seen so many non-IR tablets. According to my high payment, I want to have/own/get the best tablet. That is a very straight-forward view or logic how you call it...

IR is not a subject like color gamut. We all know that all of the iPad minis have a lower color gamut according to Air' s. This is acceptable since all of the models have this ! This is a design issue, I can totally accept this.

BUT, I can not accept a IR problem due to the difference in panel suppliers! I have also macbook pro retina. The story was same at mbooks in the past. LG panels have failed but Samsung panels are OK. Luckily, I have samsung panel and there is no IR. The same issue is now at iPad mini retina.

To summarize, if a non-IR panel is invented and produced and sold at same price, I clearly want to have THAT non-IR panel !

It's all about personal tastes ... If you think your iPad is not up to your expected standard, return it.
If you can't find a good one after a couple of returns, then maybe you are expecting something iPad can't give you.

I have already returned 3 pcs. and just gave another order. I insist on having the good tablet.

I've come to the conclusion that I am doomed.

I am on my fourth iPad Mini and when I went into the Apple Store I've come to find that once you do a replacement through the genius bar it renders the replacement un-returnable.

Which really sucks because if I had known about this I would've just returned the Mini and bought a new one once they were back in stock.

Here are the four Mini Serials with image retention:

DLXLPB (4th, current one I have)
DLXLP6 (3rd one)
DLXLP9 (2nd one)
DLXLN2 (1st one)

Also, I think if I keep doing genius bar repairs I'm going to get DLXN models over and over again.

Sad for you… all of them LTE ?

Yup. I wish I had known of the genius bar clause before I agreed to the swap. My fault for not reading what I was signing

Press the home button 10000 times to damage it… a good way to swap…Or remove the auto lock , full brightness and Marco test page. If you edit the HTML code, you can exceed 10 minutes limit. I am pretty sure that the screen will die if you try this for a long period. Then you can go and kiss that genius guy :)

I just wanted to chime in on the topic of "you're looking for a problem where there isn't one" side of this thread. I did not run the test and I did not know about this issue, I actually encountered image retention while opening an app.

The picture doesn't do it full justice, but shows how it looked like:

After seeing the ghosting I did some research and then ran the test. I had the ipad 3 used the same app under the same circumstances and never had any ir.

Just want to get my moniesworth here and make sure I have a good unit.
