I hear the browsing experience on the Instinct is pretty weak, but then again, on the HTC Touch it's nothing phenomenal either.

Apparently, the instinct is an open platform. Doesn't that mean that it's possible for Firefox Mobile to eventually end up as an application for the instinct? While it's more likely for it to be available for WinMo and Symbian, Firefox is open source as well. This would make it that much easier to port it to the instinct platform. Firefox Mobile looks interesting. It definitely puts touchscreen use as a priority.

Maybe... I think maybe some of the nastiness I've heard about the Instinct is regarding Sprint, who apparently lock down their phones pretty tight (this is just what I've heard from friends in the States, I haven't been researching the Instinct super closely). But any phone that can take a new browser is good news. IE Mobile, I've learned, kinda sucks :)

I'm really looking forward to Firefox, although from what I've read, 2009 is likely when it's out.

The local CTV news at noon covered this today and mentioned the petition at runinediphone. They reiterated that Rogers is unlikely to bow to pressure from petitions etc and will only listen if sales are impacted.

So, if anyone is planning on buying the iPhone, regardless of the packages available being crap, at least hold off for a few weeks or months. Even if you end up buying it at any, you can only help yourself as packages might end up being improved. And you would obviously be helping out those that have no intention of buying until the plans are improved by adding to the pressure they get from lack of initial sales.

I was considering purchasing the iPhone a few days after June 11th but agree with you. I think it will be best to wait until sometime in August, perhaps even end of August. Hopefully more peope can do the same.

Am I reading this right? There must be a catch. I've sent an email to Bell to make sure "10$ unlimited browsing" really means what I hope it means. There is got to be a catch.

Edit: I sent my chart to Jason Laszlo, Associate Director, Media Relations, Bell Canada and he confirmed that it is accurate. That 10$ unlimited browsing fee can be slapped on any Bell Canada plan, no strings attached.

In the table below, I compared Roger's Most affordable and Roger's most expensive iPhone plans to the closest Bell equivalents.

Maybe Bell want to capitalize on the poor reception Roger's iPhone plans is getting.

Sure, I'd take an iPhone any day over the instinct but not at those prices.

This is exactly what I don't understand about Rogers. If the average amount of data transferred is 100MB, then why don't they just make it unlimited? Just simply making the data unlimited will probably get them 10x the number of iPhone customers that they would be getting with these current crappy plans, but it will not congest their system because - as they state - on average it will only be 100MB per person. They won't be collecting overage charges, but the increase in subscribers will generate many many more times the revenue than overage charges incurred by a select few.

So there can be only two reasons for them not to see this: a) they're actually lying about average data use, or b) they're stupid

Probably a bit of both.

I actually sent them a question asking this exact same thing. Here was the reply from PR.

Adam, Thanks for your feedback, I'll pass it along. Regards, Liz

ahhhh.. if only bell was GSM. i would unlock my iphone and use their service. hell. i'd go back to them for my high speed internet just to stick it to rogers.

This is new to me:
http://www.rogers.com/cms/html/iphone_terms.shtml

Price Plan Downgrade Fee
If you have subscribed to an iPhone Voice & Data Package or a Voice Price Plan with a Monthly Service Fee of more than $30, then a Price Plan Downgrade Fee of $50 will be applied to your invoice if, for any reason, you change to a Price Plan with a Monthly Service Fee of $30 or less at any time during the Service Agreement Term. A Price Plan Downgrade Fee will not be charged if your service is terminated prior to the end of the Service Agreement Term, although you will be subject to any applicable early cancellation fee.

Great to see that Bell is at least going to offer something comparable phone-wise and something superior and competitive price-wise. The Instinct is not the iPhone, but in the same ballpark at leats - a viable alternative, I would argue...

Yeah but it's still an $8 service that Rogers charges you for (if you don't get an iphone plan)

Dang. Where is that on the website? If that's true, definitely sucks. Every single thing they charge you for...I wouldn't be surprised if they sold a "screenless" iPhone and charged you an extra 11.95/month for the screen...

It's the beauty of a la carte service plans...

If that's 30,000 signatures and contracts lost on average paying $115 per month, that's Rogers loss of... *drumroll*

$3,450,000

TADA.

For my plan right now that I personally have for just a regular cell phone, rogers works out cheaper than TELUS for me. TELUS has had consistently horrible CS and i'd rather be at rogers.

if thats the case, try fido. the per second billing is a money saver. i know its still right pocket, left pocket for rogers, but it doesn't support their core brand.

The reply they gave you can be translated to "I can't give you an honest answer for that, so I'll just ignore it and throw the question into the bin."

It's not on the website, but someone had sent an e-mail to Liz Hamilton about it and that was what she responded. The post is probably buried in this thread somewhere.

Bell is undercutting Rogers with the instinct

Unlimited data for $10

Like Rogers, Bell Mobility offers a variety of voice plans, but asks $10 a month for the unlimited data plan, applicable to the Instuinct alone. The plan includes unlimited Web browsing and Internet e-mail (including Hotmail and Gmail accounts), as well as attachments. Features such as the global positioning system as well as live and on-demand TV are treated as separate expenses, such as the optional $15 per month streaming music plan. The lowest price plan for the Instinct includes 100 minutes of local calls for $20; 1,000 minutes of voice calls from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. and weekends (Fridays from 9 p.m. to Mondays at 7 a.m.); an $8.95 monthly system access fee; 75 cents for 911 emergency calls, and the $10 unlimited data plan. The monthly total comes to $39.70 before taxes.

There is also one-time activation fee of $35.

We'll see how Rogers responds.

wow you mounties are really pissed:eek:

I may just be an ignorant Canadian but, Mounties refer to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police... so basically it's like me saying 'You State Troopers are really happy with your AT&T unlimited plans'

Correct me if I'm wrong here.

We'll see how Rogers responds.

Probably wont respond, I remember quite well when Bell introduced the Touch and allowed for the $7 internet plan to be put on it, everyone thought "oh my god, Bell thought up an amazing idea, I wonder how Rogers will fight back!!". A week or two later, Telus did a promo similar to that.. $15 unlimited data and email for any PDA (they kept the deal but now its $30.. which is still a bargain). Where was rogers? They didnt fight back for many many months. Bell and Telus released these plans back almost a year ago and it took until around February for Rogers to fight back with the $7 unlimited wap plan for non-PDA/Blackberries, while on Telus and Bell there were unlimited options for almost any phone or PDA out there.

From HoFo:

Customers are not restricted just to the 4 iphone bundles that were announced & are able to select from most of our other voice & data plans. We do not have an unlimited data plan, although we are looking at potentially tweaking some of the data plan bucket sizes. More to follow.

If they shifted all their data limits by removing their low-end one and adding a new high-end one...I'd be fine with that.

You must be pretty popular if you think you can get family/friends/dates to call long distance any time they want to talk to you on the phone.

Not to mention you'll need a US address, so you'll have to pay for a PO box.
