You must be pretty popular if you think you can get family/friends/dates to call long distance any time they want to talk to you on the phone.

Not to mention you'll need a US address, so you'll have to pay for a PO box.

i got all that plus most of my fam is in the US or abroad. so shouldn't be too much of a problem in technicality. more price.

edit: and yes i am very popular

oh no you won't be! you'll stick it out with the rest of us to get what is truly fair and not what is good enough :p

snap up soldier!

Yes sir! ;)

We'll have to see what they do, if anything...not exactly holding my breath for anything amazing.

I've noticed that Bell's offer is even better tand Roger is worse than I thought (I was comparing rate for Bell's anywhere in Canada to Roger's Local rates).

If only Apple would release a version of the iPhone compatible with Bell's network. (Which according to analyst is simple enough)

Here is an updated comparison:

Dear Gary

Thank you for taking the time to write to us, we appreciate your use of
online customer service.

In your recent email, you have informed us that you would like to know
why Rogers does not have unlimited data plans.

We have plans that offer unlimited MobileMail, unlimited on-device
browsing, or unlimited Personal E-mail on BlackBerry, as well as
unlimited domain-based E-mail on all our Windows Mobile Plans from $15
to $100 per month.
These options are competitive in both the Canadian and international
markets (despite what may be published in the press).

Rogers customers don?t need to pay premium for unlimited data when most
customers usage less than 1GB.
Our plans offer the flexibility and fairness to meet different
customers' usage needs.

No caveat or confusing ?abuse policy? behind an unlimited broadband
access data plan - Rogers? usage-based data pricing makes it clear what
can or can't be done. There won?t be a surprise call from Rogers
regarding network abuse.

Note: If the above are not enough, you most likely are looking for some
wireless broadband access. Rogers' unique Flex Rate PC Card plan offers
$50 for 50MB of usage, up to $100 for 5GB usage.

Rogers actually has one of the lowest data pricing options in the world,
however our options still provide flexibility.

Rogers data options start from $5 per month for unlimited MobileMail or
$7 per month for unlimited browsing usage.

Rogers data options provide the broadest range of data pricing, while
some US carriers don?t have low end options.

You may wish to check out our various price plans on Rogers website at:

We appreciate your continuing patronage. Please contact us at your
convenience if you have any further inquiries.

Why are so many other countries offering unlimited Data for the Iphone, would it hurt
you guys so much to do the same???? all those other countries cant be
wrong

It's not even unlimited web surfing. In that plan, you can only go to select websites.

P-79

Besides, the iPhone uses data in lots of ways other than just the browser. There's email, VPN, software updates, app purchases, the backend polling API and third-party stuff (i.e. remote desktop, ssh, online games, irc, IM, etc., etc.)

Just give us a pipe and don't tell us how to use it! Innovation creates new software and services, which creates new demand, which creates new customers! But only if you take your head out of your ass!

I just called Fido and got some more info about about the available separate data plans. They are as follows:

$30 for 300 meg
$60 for 1 gig
$80 gor 3 gig
$100 for 6 gig

As of right now, the guy didn't know if visual voicemail or Rogers/Fido wifi access are available as separate features.

Dear Gary ...
Rogers customers don?t need to pay premium for unlimited data when most
customers usage less than 1GB ...

Best one ever!

Of course most Rogers customers use less than 1GB, as up until a few weeks ago, a GB would have cost about $1500.00 from Rogers.

These guys really don't have a clue about what an iPhone is and what they are about to be selling - they're approaching it like a BlackBerry (at best) or perhaps a RAZR with a WAP browser.

Watch as Rogers modifies Safari on the iPhone into a WAP browser similar to the instinct's browser.

Would this unlimited plan mean you can go to ANY websites or only certain ones? i.e. would the iPhone be able to benefit from such a thing (of course only if Bell had a GSM network which it doesn't...)

I think you can probably go to any site with the web browser. But, I read somewhere that you'll get charged for GPS and TV usage. Paying for the TV usage should be expected, but it's unfortunate that they're charging us to use GPS.

EDIT: Here's the article.

Robbers is going to be sweating buckets tonight. Along with the Bell announcement, now Telus is joining along:

Electronista

Telus today made a surprise announcement that it will be the first North American provider to carry the Touch Diamond, HTC's new flagship touchscreen phone.

Telus ships the Diamond later this summer and will sell it for $150 on a three-year contract; unlimited web, e-mail, and messaging on the device will be available for $30, while messaging alone costs $15.

Hi, I've got 1yr left on my Rogers contract, does anyone know if there is a FIXED penalty for early cancellation or is it contract dependent?

If it's fixed, what will I have to pay to get out of my contract??

TYIA.

They charge the greater of $100, or $20 per month left in the contract, so if you've got a year left, you would be looking at $240.

You should be able to get a new phone with one year left. I signed a 2 year contract and they will allow me to upgrade phone after 1 year.

My one year is in October, but hopefully the prices will be down by then.

Unless you want to leave for one of the new Telus/Bell plans

Are you saying that I would essentially get out of the last year of my contract by signing a new 2-year one right now?

Contracts don't bother me as I rarely change providers, it's cancellation fees I have a problem with :p

It would just replace your current contract. All Rogers cares about is that you have a contract and if you sign for 2 years now, they have you for an extra year.

Exactly.. thats why i thought "avg iphone 1.0 user used 100 MB a month" thats because most ppl could not afford to use any ( 0 megs) data with it.. or ppl had $500 phone bills.. so between those two extremes, it probably was under 400 megs :)

Sweet! Thanks for this. One more question. I'm currently on an AMAZING corporate plan which I'm not sure still exists. Will Rogers allow me to stay with my current plan/price if I sign a new contract or will I have to hunt down another deal?

There's the catch. If your plan doesn't exist anymore you lose it. You can keep a plan on a month to month basis after your contract expires, so it might be beneficial to you to keep your current plan instead of signing up for a new one.

I'm amazed at all the negative press this is attracting for Rogers. Amazed and pleased of course. Not that it matters, Rogers has a complete monopoly here and they can do what they want.

The petition is doing it's job - even if it won't sway Rogers one bit, it's a focal point for news outlets to use and helps bring attention to the outrage that Apple fans feel.

As others have said the only way to bring about any change here is to NOT BUY ONE. If the iPhone flops in Canada not only will Rogers have to rethink their strategy to sell more pricy iPhones but Apple will be none too pleased. If anyone can pressure Rogers here, it's His Steveness.

I doubt Steve considers it a priority as he would, say, the China, or Japan release. Canada: 33 million people. Japan: way way more, heck Tokyo almost matches Canada's population by itself. China has 200 cities with a population of a million or more. Two hundred. Two freaking hundred.

Who helps Apple get to the ten million iPhone mark more easily? That is where the focus is.

We are small fish in the big pond, folks. We need to do this on our own.

And it won't hurt for Telus and Bell to scare Rogers either.

The BIGGEST reason why Rogers has gotten as big as they have is they don't require a credit check to activate phone service with them. Where-as, both Telus and Bell require like $1000-$2500 deposits for people who don't have good credit, or have little credit without a cosigner.

Can someone verify this as true? If FIDO[I'd rather use them.] requires a credit check I will be unable to get the iPhone. If Rogers does require it as well as Fido I'm screwed.

That is NOT good. I need a new phone and I really want it to be the iPhone. Do either FIDO or Rogers require a credit check?
