The page was linked to from the iPhone page, so yes they'll apply to the iPhone. They also mirror what the Fido rep told me last night. It's just a case of Rogers getting off their asses and updating the page already.
The email portion is next to useless if it doesn't allow more than one email address. The Fido Value Packs for data atleast include unlimited emails from up to 10 accounts. The $20 value pack from Fido also says it includes unlimited browsing. This is probably crippled by being WAP only, but when I called last week, the rep said it was not limited that way. Of course, at that time they did not know if it could apply to iPhone. Still not really sure. The WinMo 'Value' pack they have is much more limited and that is probably the option Fido will provide.

Just got off the phone with Fido again. She said they are still not sure which data packages will be allowed with the iPhone, other than the canned iPhone packages. I told her the Fido iPhone page now explicitly says other plans can be used and to call Fido for a list of which ones. She replied that they will not know definitively until July 11 or after. Heads up their asses is right.

But doesn't the phone have to suffer and not the people? Assuming that it is in fact the Jesus phone. It is supposed to suffer on our behalf. :D

Nope, that was just something in the marketing material... most know it by it's more common name: The Bible... in reality it's always the people that suffer :) They say prostitution is the oldest profession, I'm pretty sure it was marketing.

I'm looking at it in a different way. I qualify for a handset upgrade on my current plan. I was told I could potentially pay less than $199 for an 8GB iPhone 3G because of this. I own an original iPhone right now, but don't subscribe to data because well... you know $$$. I have found that I rarely need data (I guess it's just me) but I'm on campus most of the time, or at home and I get free wifi at any of these places (thank you iphone version 2.0 and Cisco VPN). Now, if I can use my current voice plan ($40/month including taxes and fees) and no sign up for data, and get an 8GB iPhone WITH a warranty and all I have to do is extend my contract for an extra 2 years (because I have one left anyways), why would I not do that? Data can be disabled at the source (Rogers). If and when an appropriate data plan is released, I upgrade to it for $x and I'm not getting cheated.

Sorry to all those boycotting the iPhone who need data, I really do sympathize, but for me, this is a decent deal that I'm willing to go for.

I have a simple solution to all of this, which I plan to implement on and after July 11th:

I WON'T BE BUYING THE IPHONE!!!!!

If you all agree, then you should implement the same plan. Simple economics should take care of the rest.

End of story.

If you could, you should wait a few weeks/months after the launch before buying it, otherwise in the long run, you'll just be shooting yourself in the foot.

That's my intention as well. I was planning on disbling 3G data browsing on the device, but if I can do that in-store, that's even better.

Rogers won't see dime 1 from me for data until that $60 iPhone plan includes Call Display and unlimited data.

Until then, WiFi FTW!!!

I talked to a smarter guy at Fido. He said he wasn't sure, but looked it up. And the numbers he gave me were exactly the same as what was posted on the Rogers site the next morning.

I thought she would do the same. She put me on hold so she could find out and came back with her lame answer. Then kicked me a little further to say that I was not in my upgrade window until next year and would have to sign a new contract, along side my existing, to get the iPhone. I asked about what price of the iPhone if I didn't want another contract, as I have no need to carry two separate contracts. She repeated that I was best to get an iPhone package and contract. She did not seem very bright. I asked, since I have been a Fido customer for about a decade, would there be any flexibility regarding the upgrade window. She put me on hold again and then repeated that she did not have that information and would not until July 11 or after. It was a fun call.

She repeated that I was best to get an iPhone package and contract.

Yeah, my guy told me that the iPhone packages were best, etc. But he wasn't pushy about it at all.

Of course since I'm not on a contract, it's all much easier for me.

I'd imagine that this week we'll know about visual voicemail as a separate feature. But I'm going to start off with $60 for 1gig, and go down depending on my use. My current voice plan ($25 for unlimited local incoming calls) is perfect for me, and I don't want to lose it.

I'd be surprised if Rogers is going to let you walk away with an iPhone 3G for $199 (or less) and not force you into one of their $60/month (or more) iPhone plans. If they do let you good for them... and you... nice change over what they're doing with the current iPhone plans... especially the $15 callid only in a bundle nonsense.

It'll be really interesting to see how Canadians respond to Rogers and their iPhone service. Rogers is really pushing customers to the limit on this one... a well designed experiment to say the least.

It sounds like they are willing to let you get the subsidized price without the iPhone specific plans they have. You probably still need to sign a 3 year contract, but you can add their existing data plans to voice plans. Now we just need the to develop and release reasonable data plans.

Well, I'll still be renewing my contract as I understand it. I assume once you're eligible for a hardware upgrade, their "subsidy" has been paid by me and to them I'll just be paying the iPhone subsidy for the next 3 years. I'll pay $300 if I get to keep my plan.

The BIGGEST reason why Rogers has gotten as big as they have is they don't require a credit check to activate phone service with them. Where-as, both Telus and Bell require like $1000-$2500 deposits for people who don't have good credit, or have little credit without a cosigner.

Can someone verify this as true? If FIDO[I'd rather use them.] requires a credit check I will be unable to get the iPhone. If Rogers does require it as well as Fido I'm screwed.

That is NOT good. I need a new phone and I really want it to be the iPhone. Do either FIDO or Rogers require a credit check?

Sorry for reposting, but I need to know.

It's not even unlimited web surfing. In that plan, you can only go to select websites.

NO.

I've used the $7 unlimited on several Nokia handsets on Rogers, and it really is unlimited: surf any website, anywhere, anytime, no extra data charges.

Really?????

I asked about the plan at a Rogers store and they said you can only go to select sites on the plan. Have you received any extra charges?

$7 for Rogers seems to cheap to be unlimited internet surfing.

Seem cheap, but might not really be. While it is probably not bad if you only browse webpages, it doesn't apply to retrieving and sending emails, appstore downloads or other downloads, IM's etc. The Fido page for the $7 unlimited surfing plan now specifically states it is for WAP only.(it did not say this last week)
Go for either the Unlimited Surfing on your Fido option or the $20 Value Pack and get as many WAP mobile Internet page views as you like every month without any extra charges.
http://www.fido.ca/portal/en/domore/3g_mobile_internet.shtml

So if you see it says mobile internet, it likely means WAP only.

THIS IS TRUE. i worked for tmobile tech. they too made a clear distinction between mobile internet, and wireless internet. you had to get 2 distinct options for either WAP or internet (hooking your celly as a modem for your laptop). WAP sites tend to be only a few K (being text only... just a few words), as opposed to real websites with dynamic content.

one of the reasons people point out the ridiculous assumption, by rogers, that 400mb can get you 3,100 webpages, is that they are probably basing it on the WAP browsing habits. it just shows you how out of touch they are, and have no clue what product they are selling.

this is what i recommended to tmobile customers, and to you guys. when calling rogers/tmobile, call the tech support and say you are having trouble with which ever phone, once you get to tech support, ask the the questions about WAP and all that jazz. they will know, in fact, most of the general reps call tech support when they put you on hold and 'look into it'. the tech support guys usually don't mind (i didn't) answering your questions because its an easy and quick call compared to trying to help some guy who can't even program his vcr, and is now trying to use a sony/ericsson as a modem via USB running windows 95....

the horror...the horror....

Haha I had to laugh at that last part. I can just imagine some of the absurd phone calls you guys get.

'Wait, so how do I turn my tv on?'
