I should add, I'm really bad at this stuff and tossed it together rather quickly.

Miscalculation

any better

It says 5 minutes/day. That's actually incorrect. 150 represents WEEKDAY minutes, because weekends are free. So you don't divide 150 by 30. It should be 150/22 = 6.8 minutes a day.

The Financial Post picked up the story that ran today in the Vancouver Sun:

I point this out only because I know some of us are happy to see the continued pressure on Roger over their pricing. (I also noticed that ruinediphone.com is now over 50k signatures, not that Rogers cares.)

Of course none of it matters at this point. Rogers isn't going to back down on pricing before friday so I'm afraid we're stuck with this pricing for now. However I still maintain that with the current pricing Rogers is going to fail to get any real sales penetration with the iPhone in Canada. After the initial wave of interest sales are going drop dramatically because the monthly bill is simply too costly and there's a point at which the average consumer says "too rich for my blood." And it'll have nothing to do with the bad press, they've simply over estimated what Canadians are willing to pay. Which is why I'm still convinced Rogers will cave and reduce their iPhone rate plans 3 months from now if not sooner - and when they do they'll probably make a big deal about the competitive generosity they're showing their customers.

I really want an iPhone. (I'm a little sad I won't be running out on Friday to grab one.) But I'm just not willing to pay that much to enjoy it. (I can afford it, but I can also afford to pay $5 for a drink at a movie and I don't because that's just a stupid price.)

how's this

To add to the feedback, you need to add a slightly fairer approach to data, as well. Off-plan data may be crazy, but they also offer those tiered data plans that start at $30 for 300MB.

Your document gives the impression that it's either an iPhone plan or 5 cents per KB....

I also think the claim that phone features will be unusable is questionable.

EDIT: I'm also not sure about the claim that it will cost $200 per month to operate the device "as intended."

good read. i especially love this quote

The website has also recommended consumers complain to Canada's Competition Bureau, but those complaints aren't likely to get anywhere.

"Where consumers are concerned about the plans being offered with the iPhones, we don't consider this to be a competition issue," said bureau spokesperson Marilyn Nahum. "We don't consider the iPhone to be a distinct market.

"It's a cellphone that competes with other cellphones in the market. If consumers don't like the plans being offered with the iPhone they can go to the competitors."

mutha****as... makes me want to shoot every person in the government. they just don't get it.

mutha****as... makes me want to shoot every person in the government. they just don't get it.

I think she's right, even though it sucks. Where disgruntled iPhone fans need to be pushing the bureau (and their elected officials) is with regard to the wider mobile market and the fact that providers seem content to not compete -- instead just offering different flavours of the same things at the same prices...

Although it does seem like the iPhone may have served to wake up Telus and Bell a little bit.

Yes, Fido seems to be the best option for me, and for most others I would say? I couldn't imagine anyone picking Rogers over Fido... their plans are so similar except for the per second billing which Fido has (right?). I think the 30 dollar free incoming calls plan is going to suit me just fine. Maybe the 15 dollar Value Pack as well.
also, the evenings and weekends start at 7pm with Fido but 9pm with Rogers.

According to this CBC article, Apple will be selling iPhone 3G at their store in almost every other country, even those that only have a single store.

While it true the Apple Canada website only ever mentioned Rogers and Fido, that doesn't mean they never intended to sell at their own stores, though it might. It is interesting that Canada is being treated differently, in terms of the iPhone being not sold in Apple Stores, than the rest of the world.
Edit: Apple's UK site does not mention the Apple Stores in their Where to Buy link either, but it will apparently be available at those locations. So, just because Apple Store are not mentioned on the web site does not mean they were not planning on selling them there in Canada. Certainly, they appear to be planning to do so any longer.

The most important thing I read in this article is that Apple is keeping track of complaints. Yay!

Keep up the pressure guys...this may not have an immediate impact, but I suspect that Apple will bring this to the table IF or when they re-negotiate a deal with Rogers.

Lets just wait for the reports of huge surcharges for data use that will likely start rolling in by next Monday. If Rogers thinks the negative press will go away, they haven't seen nothing yet!

Guys, I talked to Fido and Rogers reps "before" the plans were officially announced or the big fuss started on the net. The said that they did not have exact details but Apple had pressured them to lower the prices before agreeing to partner with them. Rogers had agreed to lower their "pricing" to AT&T levels but this did not mean that we would be getting complete feature parity.

Apple was fully aware of the price plans in Canada, Sweden, Norway and other countries. If you think otherwise then I am afraid that you are quite naive to say the least.

Rogers probably received most of their stock in their main depots before the plans were announced.

I cannot believe how a few bloggers speculating and a bunch of busy body Americans can cause such a fuss in the Canadian media.

Fido vs Rogers

Fido = customer serivce, billing by the second and better roaming agreements

Anyone who was an original FIDO customer will know that their level of customer service was excellent. The management team at Rogers should be embarrassed by their shabby stores (even FIDO has better looking stores) and chronically bitching customer service staff (on the phone or in person)...dreadful experience.

Your customer service folks are completely in the dark...and inappropriately uninformed for such a significant launch - it's not like the iPhone was a surprise or anything.

Actual responses included, "hey they never really tell us what's going until the last moment - can't help you. Call back, um, maybe Wednesday?"...charming, slick, professional. Hey John Boyton (VP Marketing)...perhaps you want to visit an Apple store and get a first hand glimpse of how Apple treats their customers and shows respect for the folks that drive revenue for them. Smug - This is the rate plan...So Go Screw Yourself - is not part of their greeting or closing for that matter.

All that aside, while the plans are almost - apples to apples (sorry) - FIDO bills be the second vs minute as well as the evening begins as 6pm vs 9pm (wot?).

Further, FIDO has done a superb job over the years with international carrier agreements / roaming rates. So if you travel...it can be a bit better in some circumstances.

Finally - I can only encourage the folks at Telus to get in the GSM game asap. Competition is good. And then we'll see who tells who to screw off.

Telus - love to see an ATT unlimited plan...and taking the exchange rate into consideration...$101 feels ok to me. Sold and I am in for 3 years and feel protected, equal and pretty good about it all.

Bring it.

PS. Hey Ted Rogers...that's your name on the building. That's your reputation. The iPhone was your announcement. Is that what the Rogers brand now stands for? You seeing any of this. Do something.

Here's one snippet from that e-mail, the one that I based most of the reply on:
As based on reports that the average usage for the first generation iPhone was less than 100MB per month

All the reports I found stated the average was MORE than 100MB.

If the stuff included in the $15 "value pack" was included in the $60 price, I would probably get an iPhone. The nickle-and-diming that Rogers is infamous for really ticks me off!!! I can afford to pay $93/month for the $60 plan + $15 value pack etc. etc. etc. But it pisses me off so much that I just can't do it. I'm definately not going to purchase an iPhone on the 11th. If I eventually do purchase an iPhone it will be voice plan only with no data. I currently carry an iPod Touch and a phone. Carrying a single device is quite appealing to me.

Its quite disappointing. I was excited about owning an iPhone. I own a lot of Apple products and they are high quality.

Thanks for nothing Rogers!!!!

Cheers,
:)

And those countries are the most expensive, period. Rogers talk.

About the naive part: I think Apple has a record for that too. Yeah, I think they knew pricing. But I guess they did not know how Canadians would react... or did they?

Some people complained about the price of the iPhone when Apple announced it. Those posts about "no business person would want to have the same phone any 14-year old would have" and the others involving pimps and whores. Guess what? It won't happen in Canada. Those early complainers and Rogers defenders should be happy= "No iPhones for the scum."

Don't screw it drawing the line here.

You are probably correct. Apple probably did have to pressure and strong arm Rogers to improve their incredibly bad plans and the best they could get out of them was the announced iPhone plans. If these were the result of Apple having to pressure Rogers, then it isn't a stretch to think that they were not the Apple's first choice but what they had to agree to to get Rogers on board, just as Rogers had to accept their 'improved' plans in order to get Apple on board. Now that the reaction of Canadians has been so negative, it had probably given Apple a chance to try and get Rogers to re-think their plans. This would benefit users and obviously Apple. In the end it would benefit Rogers by increasing their subs, but they don't seem to accept this.

And the outrage in Canada has nothing to do with bloggers or busy body Americans. It is entirely due to Canadians finally waking up to being ripped off (well, the intelligent ones anyway. Those suckers that want to pony up for whatever Rogers wants to shove down their throats seem very happy with the plans).

I spoke to my cousin's friend's brother's uncle's wife's friend's daughter, who works at Rogers before the plans were announced and she said Apple was pressing Rogers to improve their rates and release reasonable plans. Rogers countered that they wanted to gouge as much as possible from their customers. Eventually they met in the middle.

This interesting stories will roll in after a month or so, when people get their bill.
