I think this has put me over the edge... depending on how much nickle and diming they are going to do on this 30$ addon I will be getting one. Not on launch day... but maybe a week or 2 after.

My Razr last night has decided that whenever I turn it on it wants to turn off right away... so I really do need a new phone... wanted to wait for new GSM people though.. was hopeing the Razr with a broken screen would hold out...

I was thinking exactly the same thing...but then i thought, so is everyone else. With the expected sell out and no idea what their stock refresh rates will be like, I may have to go on launch day. If they sell out, I want to make sure I can get one before the Aug 31 deadline for the promo plan.

Yea... I thought of that as well... gonna have to talk it over with the Bank Account... :D

6GB may as well be unlimited for me :) I will DEFINITELY be buying one now.

Thanks for listening, Rogers.

Now, about that voice plan ;)

That’s hilarious. You should work for the Rogers legal department, you would fit right in!

On another note – the $30 / 6GB option is AMAZING!! Now run to stores!! And please don’t start complaining about other things like minutes, SMS or other silly things - DATA was the main sticking point.

*acceptance of Twinkie contained within implies agreement to 3-year term of eating and/or digesting and/or passing of said Twinkie. Additional Twinkie can be purchased after a period of one year. Twinkie prices will vary depending on fair market value. Rogers reserves the right to charge a premium on said twinkie. Fair Market Value is decided by Rogers based on whatever we feel a twinkie might be worth to the vast majority of Canadians. If you're hungry enough, a twinkie might be worth, oh, I dunno...$250. If you prefer, you may subscribe to our Twinkie Flex Rate, in which you are free to purchase only a portion of a twinkie at a reduced cost. You may purchase 1/100 the length of the twinkie (a slice approx. 5mm thick) for only $30. Value for Twinkie increases the larger the slice you purchase, up to a maximum of $250. If you intend to chew your Twinkie, we recommend you subscribe to our mastication plan. Passing of Twinkie will result in a $75 Fecal Processing Fee, plus an additional charge for weight of said stool. Rogers is not responsible for separating the Twinkie fro anything else in said stool. Twinkie stool will be weighed as presented and rounded up to the next closest pound. (Yes, we charge by the pound.) Thank you for enjoying your Rogers Twinkie. Go fu¢k yourselves, Canada.

Anyone have any tips on my getting the cheapest voice plan possible?

If you are a new customer, there is not so much you can do...

But if you a re an existing customer, telling them you want to leave for Telus or Bell and they will switch you to the retention dept where they will give you a lot to keep you as a customer...

Actually, as far as I know, the best retention plan available (almost the same everywhere) is :

200 mimutes daytime
Unlimited night and weekend (beginning à 6 PM, ending at 8 AM)
Caller ID
Call fowarding
Voice mail
Conference call
...

for 20 $ a month + 911 and access fee.

The press release says it "can be added to any in-market voice plan". So does that mean no retention type plans?

I have been with Fido for 9 years and couldn't get that out of them. I have basically the same, but 300 minutes and my evenings start at 7 and I pay $30. They had some EPP plans that were decent for a while, but I kept missing the window to call.

Caving In

Okay, so now people are caving because Rogers is throwing you a tiny bone? Don't forget that they are also charging you extra for voice mail, caller id, visual voice mail, text messaging, the bogus system access fee and 911 fee. They are still nickel and diming you and if you want full service with your iphone it will still cost alot because if you choose the new 6GB data plan you have to get everything else ala cart. So you are looking at something like $25 for 250 minutes talk time +$30 for data + $8 for visual voice mail + $7 for caller id + $5 for text messaging for a total of $75 plus taxes and that plan also does not include any WiFi Hotspot access which will cost you an additional $24 for 600 minutes of Hotspot use at Starbucks etc. With that added you are at $99 which is a bit better than the previous plan at $100 in terms of data but with far less talk time.

Also, don't forget you are signing your life away to Rogers for 3 years when there will likely be iphone upgrades from Apple every year as well as possibly new competition in the marketplace in 12 to 18 months.

I still think Rogers is ripping us off. I think that for $100 a month we should have an all in plan that includes something like 500 or 600 minutes of talk time, at least 5 to 6GB of data if not unlimited, voice mail, caller id, a decent amount of text messages (200 to 300), unlimited evenings that that actually start in the evening, unlimited weekends, and all the bogus SAF and 911 fees included. That might be just acceptable to me. Throwing me a stupid bone of 6GB of data for $30 when the CDMA competition offers unlimited data for $30 or less is bull***t. When are the cell companies going to be forced to offer clear and simple plans instead of all these stupid options and combinations that end up nickel and diming us to death?

If you get a cheap voice plan that doesn't include voicemail and 6GB for $30, will Visual Voicemail still work? Or do you have to pay extra for that?

I am existing... but on Pay and Go Unlimited Evenings / Weekends Option
Couldn't hurt to call in and ask I suppose. Call their customer service line and press the button to cancel service, this will put you through to their retention dept. Depending on how long you have been with them, even as pay as you go, they might willing to offer you something. I would suggest telling them that you are considering switching from Pay as you Go to a contract, but that you want to know the best contract they can offer and that you are also considering cancelling with them and considering Bell/Telus for your new contract, depending on who gives you the best offer.

they might go ahead and start processing your cancellation or they might offer you nothing but the advertised rates or you might get lucky and they might start wheeling and dealing.

I think VisualVoiceMail still requires that you have an active VoiceMail service. otherwise, where are your messages being stored and retrieved from. Also, the $30/6GB plan does not include Visual Voice Mail, so even if you have VoiceMail now, it will be another $8 to get VVM.

I've seen reference to the $8 for VVM in this thread. Is there a link to this information. Has it been confirmed?

Cheers.

Okay, so now people are caving because Rogers is throwing you a tiny bone?

It's not called caving if I planned to buy it all along. I was prepared to spend up to $100 a month, now I'll be paying $81.32 including caller ID and visual voicemail. Even if I decide I want a text package, I'm well under what I was expecting to pay.

I don't need a big text messaging plan. At most I send a dozen or so a month. My existing voice plan gives me unlimited local incoming calls (and per second billing with Fido), and if I have 6gigs of data (which for 99% of users is unlimited data), then I don't really need Hotspot access do I? I can download songs/tv shows and Apps at home.

This is what most people were asking for. Hell, all I wanted was $30 for 1 gig.

Only from what I have read today at Macnn and Appleinsider. I believe this number is from Rogers statements last week regarding a la carte options.
I will see if I can dig it up at Rogers/Fido.

You people are so blind. All you see is a number of $30 and 6gb. Do the math, it's still a rip-off after you add features and tax. All Rogers is doing is putting a better spin on it, it's called marketing and it's meant to fool you which apparently it has.

We'll see how many of you are pissing an moaning when your first bills come in at over $100 a month.

I did all the math for my circumstance. $81.32 for $25 unlimited local incoming calls, $30 6GIGs of data, $15 for CID/VM, $6.65 SAS fee, $.50 911 fee and 5% GST. As I mentioned above, I don't use much text messaging. 6 gigabytes of data is unlimited as far as I'm concerned, frankly I'd be surprised if I use even 1 gig.

DAMN YOU you Albertans with your black gold and no provincial sales tax!! ;):D

My plan is perfect for me:

($31 (100 mins, 1000 eve/WE, Call Display, VM, 100 Txtx) + $30 6GB + 6.95 SAF + .50 911) x 13% = $77.35.

As has been said before, 6gb may as well be unlimited for me.

Since I'll be mostly e-mailing with this thing, and I'm sure I'll be G-Talking and FB IMing and will almost certainly have VoIP installed by the time I get home, I see little, if any, downside.

Yes, it's more than Bell, but with a fair data rate, I'm willing to pay a little extra to get my coveted iPhone.

Hopefully the 3 months unlimited calling promo still applies.
