Well I just got back from my local Rogers. The rep there is actually pretty good. He knows his stuff, seems to have a decent IQ and has been keeping up with all the iPhone hype. He assured me 100% that the $30/6GB data plan is only valid with voice plans greater than $30 (before extra like $8 VVM which is not included). He said that you are basically required to get a $35/month voice plan and then you can add the $30/6GB data. OF course VVM will be $8 more if you want it and of course any value pack would have to be on top of that (not to mention the 6.96+0.5 fees).

Yuck. Their press release yesterday is entirely misleading and false advertising.

No way. That would be such BS. "a data-only offering of 6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be added to any in-market voice plan" - it says ANY.

do you anticipate sell-outs anywhere in Canada?

Another question: If you get a 200 minutes anytime plan, who cares if your evenings start at 7 (Fido) vs. 9 (rogers)? Am I missing something? I thought the 200 minute plans come with unlimited weekends/nights....guess I was wrong.

Right, in the case of the $20/200 minute plan, the evening issue doesn't matter. But you still get per-second billing with Fido and not Rogers.

He's wrong.

I talked to a Fido rep on the phone about 5 minutes ago and they told me that you can get the $20 plan, add the $20 iPhone package (10,000 text messages, caller id, etc.), and then add the $30 data plan (keep in mind you have to add the system access fee on top of that).

Edit: and he said that Visual Voicemail is $8.

Thanks. Still worth going with fido I guess.

I'll be really bummed if they actually try and pull this >30$/mo plan to be eligible for data crap.

Just so everyone is aware, here's a breakdown of one of their cheapest plans:

$8 for visual voicemail + $20 for the value pack (10k text messages, caller id) + $30 for 6GB of data + $20 for 200 minutes + $6.95 system access fee

With tax you're looking at $97 a month.

Ok.. umm... Can I have a link showing all of this... I would like to see where it says anything about a $20 iPhone package... not the 20 plan,, but the so called "$20 iPhone package".

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it :)

I'm getting a lot of mixed message on this board about Visual Voicemail but I just heard it from the mouth of the specially trained "iPhone department":

- The $30 6GB plan includes visual voice mail
- If you're eligible for a hardware upgrade, the iPhone is $50 more on the spot but you get a $50 mail in rebate.
- Rogers will be carrying every model (8GB Black, 16GB Black, 16GB White) with a higher proportion of the 8GB Black model.

note: If you want to check for yourself, dial 611 on your Rogers handset and ask for Customer Service and then ask to be transfered to the iPhone department.

Okay, that sounds good, but I have a question for you. If you have "visual voice mail" does that automatically mean you also have the voice mail service? (i.e. if I get a cheap plan that doesn't come with voicemail and I don't add it, will I have voicemail capabilities because of the $30/6gig data plan?)

Thanks.

I thought that once you had a data package and a voice mail option being paid for it would give you Visual Voicemail automatically. It's not an extra charge on top of the price you already pay to have voicemail is it?

See if you can make sense of this... [snip]
That's the most incoherent email I've ever read.

I think you're correct. Voice mail itself must be $8 (through Fido).

As best as I can tell, Voice Mail and Visualvoice mail are independant from eachother. If you have an iPhone with a data plan, you automatically get visual voicemail.

Having visual voice mail doesn't entitle you to regular call in voicemail.

ok, so what your saying is that if i get a new contract, then i will be able to get the iphone for $300...
cause my brother is about to get a phone plan and is not intereted in the iphone. so can i take his iphone and activate it in my account, or are they going to activate it only on one phone?
can't hurt to try.

So who's camping?? I'm not pulling a 50 hour thing like the guy in New Zealand but I'm definitely relocating my address to outside Toronto Life Square at 4am tonight.

4 hour wait should be worth it to ensure that I get the white 16GB model

I really don't think that's necessary. My local store opens at 10 AM and I'll be there at 10. Hopefully I get one but otherwise -it's just a phone and eventually they'll have in stock.

But hey, whatever floats your boat!

I hope it's not necessary but to be sure, I'll wait the 4 hours.

I think demand is going to be high and apparently supply will be low.

Does anyone know if you absolutely have to have a data plan? Can I just get a voice plan & one of the Value packs? I have Wi-Fi at home, so thats not an issue, plus I very rarely use the internet on a cell phone anyway. So can I just get the voice/value pack without a data plan?

Yeah, no doubt people are gonna be excited over this thing, but I don't think people are going to be running out to buy this thing (even though I sort of am...).

It's hella expensive, because many people (such as myself) are used to paying 30/month.

On another note, hopefully I'll be able to get one at 10 AM.

I would say yes, but we'll likely have 100% confirmation tomorrow morning.

My Conversation With Fido Retentions

Just had an hour long conversation with Fido retention.

Here's the BREAKING information you need to know:

You can combine 6GB of data with ANY voice plan.

VVM is NOT included with the 6GB of data. While pricing will not be officially announced until tomorrow (July 11, 2008), the representative estimated it would cost $8 per month...and that it WOULD be included in the iPhone value packs...so that they would mirror the Windows Mobile value pack.

ALL THE TALK OF $30/MONTH MINIMUM is to qualify for the $50 REBATE (applied to the first invoice). The phone will cost $249 (8GB) or $349(16GB), and QUALIFYING 3-YEAR VOICE CONTRACTS will get a $50 rebate on their first invoice.

If you want to sacrifice your $50 rebate, you can couple any IN-MARKET voice plan with the $30/month 6GB data plan.

What does IN-MARKET mean? He wasn't completely clear on this, but he lead me to believe that It means any plan currently advertised on the website OR (this is a big OR) ANY PLAN that retentions will offer you to keep your service. This is important.

If you're not on contract and are upgrading to the iPhone 3G tomorrow...you have a very important phone call to make in the next 1 hour 40 minutes. Call retentions and ask them what plan they can give you on a 3-year contract that provides similar value to the plan you are currently on. I've been a customer in good standing for 3 years, no upgrades, and they gave me double the daytime minutes, and threw in caller ID and unlimited texting for the SAME base price that I'm paying right now (saving me about $20-$25/month savings over the a la carte options).

Thank you, wise one!

So I'll be able to go to Fido tomorrow (new customer) and get the $20/month plan for 200 minutes, the $11 value pack (CID, voicemail, 125 SMS), and the 6GB/30$ data and the 16GB iPhone will cost me $349?

Thanks!

can you separate the process of getting the rate plan and getting the phone?

ie. call up retentions to get the plan you want, then go to a store to get the phone (and they can confirm that you just signed a 3-year contract)? Or can retentions ship out the phone once they get you on a new 3-year contract?

I just finished up a contract and I would like retentions to sweeten my deal before I re-sign.. but if I go to a store to get the phone, they won't be able to offer anything other than the standard plans

There is at least 50,000 people in Canada that will have a Rogers/Fido plan all incoming or outgoing calls to Rogers/Fido Subscribers are free if im not mistaken.

So peeps make sure everyone your calling all day has an iphone and clog those Rogers Tubes/Pipes

Cheers
Gary

With the new promotion I may get the phone. Here's a potential plan I had in mind.

$30 - 6 GB data
$20 - Mega My5 20 plan (200 WD + unlimited evenings and weekends + MY5 Canada Wide)
$11 - Value pack including call display, enhanced voice messaging, who called, mobile backup, and 125 text messages.

I sure hope they count visual voicemail as 'enhanced voice messaging' or I'll be pissed.
