(Man if someone has already announced this I'm going to need something scrape this egg off of my face)

I just walked over to a Rogers store and found out something interesting. The guy there said that each and every Rogers-Plus store has been allotted the same number of iPhones for Friday. He wouldn't tell me how many except to say that it was "less than 10".

Yeah. You're welcome.

Then roger's new data plan is too little....too late then. Even if Apple sends a new shipment to Canada because of Roger's slight change of heart it looks like the July 11th debut for Canada is still ruined.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

I'm so disappointed in a lot of my fellow Canucks here. We were finally waking up and questioning the problem with Rogers (et al) here. Then they throw this (weak) bone out that just shifts over the pricing problem to the voice half of the bill at best, and doesn't do squat to address the users who don't need the 6GB limit and are just looking for some basic overall value. It's gone from being a terrible deal to being a less terrible deal and now suddenly the discussion shifts from a solid comparison of pricing between countries to "gee, should I line up now, or wait...who wants to meet me Friday morning." I guess Rogers really does know what they're doing.

Sigh.

+1

I may get an iphone. but it sure as hell wont be on the first day and might not be for another year if the prices don't get a bit better.

HAHAHAHAHA. 6GB will be just fine. When AT&T says unlimited in the USA, they really mean up to 5GB. That's the cap... and I just looked at my iPhone that I use quite frequently and in the year that I've had it, I've received 900 megs of data. If you go over 6GB in a month, that's insane.

Will even 6GB be enough? We shall see.

Question

With this new deal where you can add 60GB of data to any voice plan for $30, does this work with Rogers existing family plans?

Well I guess I'll be getting one now, the offer is limited and I will get one while it's still on(possibly friday).
I'm not sure what I'll do for a plan yet though, 6gb for $30 is a given.

I'm already currently on Rogers and have a bit less than a year and a half left on a family plan that I share with my mother. I don't want to extend the contract of the family plan though as I want an independent plan and don't want to be locked into a plan with my mom any longer. So I will probably have to find someone to take over my phone and continue the plan(which might need to be adjusted to a cheaper plan)...but I want to keep my number when I get the iphone so this will be tricky.

With telus and bell announcing new incoming text fees it seems like there is no lesser of the evils, they're all evil, and I need a cell service so it looks like I'll go to the one who has the iphone.
I can't imagine myself coming close to 6gb in a month, especially since wifi will be used at home, but you never know- if I do I will eat my words, and a hefty data bill.

**** rogers/fido! This is a small step forward but if I have to sign a contract for 3 years, that's out of the question. What if a newer and better iPhone is out again next year? I will be stuck with it for 2 more freaking years!

Also, I have an unlocked iPhone and i just phoned Fido and they said I must also sign 3 years to be on this plan. Mr Teddy Rogers go home and f*ck yourself!

Come on dude read that properly.

Verbatim V

Please note that effective July 15th, 2008, the rate for sending a text from Canada to the United States is changing to 25 cents (previously 15 cents). Also effective that date, Text Messaging Plans and Value Packs with Text Messaging will no longer include text messages sent from Canada to the United States. Instead, subscribers to those plans or Value Packs will be charged for text messages send from Canada to the United States on a pay-per-use basis at a rate of 25 cents per message. All other aspects of those text messaging plans and Value Packs will remain the same.

It's only for Can to US.

I stand corrected. Thank you for pointing it out. My eyes must be playing tricks on me.

I just got off the phone with Fido and spoke to a CSR named Andrew. I asked if it was possible to get an early upgrade, because my upgrade isn't till October. He told me that he'll have more info on the 11th, but most likely, I won't be able to get an upgrade. Rats.:(

I don't know what everybody's issue with the 3 year contract is.

When was the last time you've been without a phone in the last 3 years?

If you answered never, then I don't see your point. Are you not going to have a phone in 3 years from now? As we've seen with 1st generation iPhone providers, when a new iPhone comes along, you'll be able upgrade to it by starting a new contract.

The other good thing is that you can add or remove from your plan whenever you see fit. If in a year their rates go down, you can sign on to those rates.

Prices in Canada (rates and hardware) will only get better from here. When Yak (GSM) hits the market and begins selling the iPhone, watch how fast Rogers adheres to better customer service practices and reduces their rates to become competitive.

Maybe its about time people like you realize that in Canada, 3 year contracts are the norm and has been for a LONG time. Rogers isn't going to go about changing that any time soon. The iPhone isn't going to change it.

And besides, if it was a normal phone, would you change it up every year?

For everyone complaining about not wanting to sign a 3 year contract because there may be a new iPhone next your you should know that you are usually able to upgrade your hardware after One Year, you sign a new contract for another 3 years from that date. (it doesn't add on to your previous contract just starts new again)

Now how the heck do I get out of my TELUS contract?

Didn't Telus just announce a revision to their pricing regarding incoming text messages? That would constitute a change to the Terms & Conditions of the contract you signed with them. A contract is binding on both parties. Legally, they must obtain your approval before making any changes to the contract.

Typically, you are given something like 30 days advance notice of such a change, and if you don't take any action, your non-response is interpreted as implied approval of the change. If you do respond with disapproval before the change takes effect, your recourse is usually immediate termination of the contract without penalty.

Why all the negatives?

Did you guys honestly expect Robbers to go from what they were offering to something that matches ATT's plan?

Even Arn himself said that he's surprised the online petition had an effect.

On this note, my Telus phone is now cancelled (no fee because the contract was over anyways) and on Friday I'm going to head over to Fido and get me an iPhone!

$20 for 200 minutes, $30 for data, $6.95 SAF, $0.50 911, $11 for CID/SMS/Voicemail = $68.45 + tax = $80

Still expensive, but the value is there I guess.

Just called Fido and it turns out that in order to get the phone for $199 you need to have a plan over 30$ (before hidden fees/value packs). Otherwise you add $50 to the price of the phone.

Yeah. You're welcome.

From what I gather, the opening day stores in each province – the ones that will open at 8am – will have a much larger number of iPhones. What they're trying to do at these stores is assemble a long line so it looks good in the media. How bad would it look if 10 people standing in line got the iPhone and the hundred people behind them didn't?

I'm camping out in front of mine from the night before. :)

If I get there and there are more than 20 people in line, I'll go find one of the obscure Rogers stores in Toronto that'll have a line smaller than 10. Also, don't forget that there are 3 different iPhones: Black 8GB + Black 16GB + White 16GB. I'm betting that most people will be after the black 8GB. I want either colour 16GB... let's see what the roulette wheel has reserved for me.

My problem with the 3 year contract is this. I have just been given a 2.5 G iphone which if I want to use with any of these plans, Rogers will force me to sign a 3 year contract. I did not get my phone from Rogers and they have not subsidized its price in any way. I always assumed that contracts were there because they had subsidized the purchase price of the phone.

They charge $X for service per month which presumably covers their costs to provide said service plus some profit (or alot of profit in some cases). Now with most phones there is a no-contract price which I assume covers the full cost of the phone and then there are subsidized prices depending on the length of the contract. The longer you sign for, the more they will profit from the accumulated monthly fees and the more they will subsidize the phone as they can recoup the larger subsidy over time and presumably still also make a profit via the monthly fees? Correct me if I am wrong so far.

So, if I have my own phone that Rogers has not subsidized then why can I not sign up for the same service on a month to month basis? They will still make a profit on the monthly charges and they have not had to subsidize my handset. Why can I not have the same plan without a long term contract if I provide my own handset?

I want the freedom to switch if some new and competitively priced providers show up in the next 12 to 18 months as is expected.

There's no white 8GB iphone, only 16GB

Now, hopefully Vodafone down here in New Zealand will come to their senses!

Have you seen the prices down here????? Works out to over $6000 for 2 years!

Sure... great... but now we have uber limited supply and all 5 people who get the iPhone are going to be thrilled...

Question: Rogers vs. Fido? Are the networks the same? Is the only difference that Fido has per second billing + evenings start at 7? Or am I missing something? I understand it's just left pocket/ right pocket for Rogers, but there must be somethign else?

I Just Sh*t My Pants

Justice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

amazing......i've never seen a company 'do the right thing' like this before. Actually listening to the customers and not the shareholders.

iPhone 3G here i come.

Yeah, but I bet the shareholder pleaded for this as well. Think of how little the would have sold especially with only offering 400 MB for $60. Now with the new plan they will sell a lot more!

So I just stopped in at a rogers store on my way home from work to confirm all this stuff. So to summarize what i asked and found out is

- can use any voice plan available
- can add $30 of 6GB data on to that for whole contract
- must have plan of $60+ to get phone at subsidized price
- phone price is paid day of not on your monthly bill later

So ya im excited im thinking of getting their $30 unlimited incoming calls and unlimited evenings and weekends with 150 minutes then adding $11 value pack with 125 text + voicemail + call display + some other stuff i dont care about. and then this $30 6GB data. for a total of $71 plus other fees and tax but that sounds pretty good to me fits my phone use perfectly and gives me way more data then id use.

Besides the differences you noted there is one big one. In order to get all of Rogers coverage it will cost you $5 extra, otherwise when you are outside of Fidos original coverage (what they had before Rogers bought them) you will be charged extra.

- must have plan of $60+ to get phone at subsidized price

I wonder how that works on a family plan? Would both phones be subsidized?
