Of the three major companies in Canada, guess which one hasn't decided (yet) to rip off their customers on text messaging? That's right. Rogers.

The other two, unbelievably, have just made the decision to start charging for *incoming* text messages. INCLUDING SPAM MESSAGES.

Talk about shooting themselves in the foot.

Rogers is shining this morning. Absolutely shining.

Not that it's any better, but it should be clarified (because a lot of articles didn't) that anyone with a texting plan -- which is most people who send or receive texts -- still doesn't pay for incoming texts.

f* amazing, :(

for more than a week canada is news because of rogers iphone offerings

but in portugal we have been presented with lot worse condidtions:

max 250 mb/500 mb traffic even with 65 € (102$) / month 2 year contract

phones are not subsidized at all in portugal,
when the iphone sells for less than 499 € (784 $ !!! and only with the most expensive plan) the 24 month contracts will include an extra 15 €*month (23.5 $) that go to a credit company

some of the portuguese crowd have been trying to get some attention for the issue here on the forums, and from macrumors in general, but not a single mention to our situation has surfaced yet

this way it will be really difficult to expect any kind of change of operator attitude change over here
some of us are just considering not getting our pre reserved units due to the proposed conditions

Get a petition going. I honestly believe that if it were not for the unprecedented response to ruinediphone, we would not have gotten nearly the media/web/blog/forums coverage that we did. Once that happened it just cascaded from there.

I don't get this

Help me out.

$30 for 6GB data,
We pick a voice plan, (Fido $20) kay,
What about visual voice mail, is this included in something?
Texting etc, Can we still get the $15 value pack?

anyone know?

By the way, I think this is good news, although the phone is still obviously an expensive proposition -- I'm thinking $70-80 a month depending on whether there are indeed charges for visual voicemail.

But there's a lot more value, I think, in these plans, because you can actually choose a voice plan that will serve your needs.

I also don't think the cap is a huge deal. Six gigs is a lot of data... I think it would take a lot of work to try to exceed it.

My wife offered to take over the contract on the phone I got after I heard about the plans in the unlikely event that Rogers improved their offering... now that they have, I've got a tough decision to make.

Three year contract! OUCH.

I'm very happy for you People in Canada, congrats !!!!

Her ein the UK people send so many complain email and make such a big deal about the problem of the online upgrade that they just agree to let use upgrade in stores !!!

PEOPLE POWER !!!! in life if you don't complain about abuse they will abuse you eben more !!!

Im with the poster who is asking the important questions.

is visual voicemail included? will I have access to rogers hotspots? can I get the 15 or 20 dollar addon that is listed with the iphone plans?

This is great news. It's always heartwarming to hear of a mass consumer outrage and petitions get through to companies trying to rip people off.

i didn't read all reply so i'm not sure if anyone has actually visited rogers' web site.

"For example, you may choose to combine one of our new data plans ranging from $30 per month (for 300MB) to $100 per month (for 6GB) with a voice plan." - http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-products/iphone_voice_data_packages

hello? it's rogers. it's $100/mon for 6GB...

I think it says that because those are their old charges, the website has not been updated yet.

So, I think I will be getting:

1: 250 mins personal plan = 25$
2: 6gb plan = 30$
3: Service Pack 15:
- Call Display
- WhoCalled
- 2,500 Sent Text Messages
- Caller Ring Trax
- 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes = 15$

That should cover all the features of the iPhone. I don't really care about the Hotspots cause there aren't any where I live.

wow !

i barely believe that it's been taken as a good news !!!

Guys , are you crazy - 3 (three whole) year contract ! - that's like being in servitude to those Rogersss gang.
You're going to pay more than 1000! bucks ON top of the usual "fortune" you've been spending . Mamma mia !

So, as great as the new data plan is I really don't think I need one - is it possible to get an iPhone with no data plan from Rogers?

I'm not a Rogers customer but don't mind signing up for three years if I'm not tethered to a data plan I don't really need (my campus has WiFi everywhere).

I just stopped into my local Rogers (niagara region, ontario) and asked about the iPhone.

I'm currently under Rogers contract and asked if I can keep my MY5 35 plan and just add data, he said that this can be done only if the plan you have is $35 or more.

I also asked about visual voicemail being included or costing $X.

I also asked about the $30 6GB plan.

His answer to both of these questions was "after 3PM we'll know."

I'm calling back in about 15 minutes.

Just got off the phone with retentions (sales doesn't know about this 6GB plan yet).
I removed the data from my blackberry and added a $30 Mega30 plan. 150 + unlimited Incoming - 90% of my calls are incoming and free evenings and weekends.
I'm also grandfathering my $11 Communication Value pack (150/Free Incoming SMS+ CallerID + Name ID + Voicemail).
You can only add the $30 6GB plan at the store.
All iPhones, regardless of the plan includes visual voicemail. .
So look at that, I'm actually paying less than my rip off BlackBerry plan ($90 + tax) and getting way more for only

$77.75 + tax all included (monthly $6.75 included)

I directed my brother in law to your post and he had the same experience as you. He's very pleased, thanks!

Do you guys really expect to go over on the 6GB? Do you know how long that would take to load over edge and not tethered? Even on 3G... I don't think I can look at the screen and surf for that long. I don't think I've ever used more than 1GB in a month.

Ever since Rogers Internet started traffic shaping, they've been kindly sending me a breakdown of my usage. And I've never even gone over 6 gigs at home. Two of us, who use the net a lot, but not for bittorrent too much.

I don't understand this statement... He already rose from the dead...
... orrrrr... did you mean did Jesus return?

Ahhh! Zombie!!

I don't know were you come from but here on planet earth, cell phone service costs "money" whether you are on a contract or not. The contract does not increase the cost of services. To the contrary, you are likely to pay less per month because companies can amortize their income over the whole year for accounting purposes.

Care to name another GSM carrier in Canada? Telus has contracts and so does Bell but they are also CDMA and have crap phones and coverage.

Does Bell offer coverage in Thunderbay? No but Rogers does.

this is technically better than the US 3G plan .... one more gigabyte of variance.

pretty sure its only better then their data plan but once you add in the voice features it starts flying abouve the US plans.

3 years is pretty normal in Canada. It sucks, but that's how it is. I just finished a three year contract for a crappy $0 samsung flip phone.

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Seriously, if you have wifi everywhere, get a pay as you go phone and an iPod Touch, and put the money you save into your "buy a car when I graduate" fund.

I have an iPod Touch and I love it. I'm only here talking about iPhones because as of this announcement, I'm on the fence, but I've been really happy with the iPod Touch and a junky 3.5 year old samsung flip phone I barely use.

City Fido

Can Fido City Plans be used with it?
.

I would say no after reading that it's for "in-market" voice plans only.
Being a City Fido user myself, this is indeed disappointing.
Where's the petition for unlimited voice plans!? :D

Stores open at 9am

You should be able to. In fact they should be able to disable the 3G functionality for you in store so that you don't accidently use data and get gouged for it.

For users who have extremely low monthly voice usage (in the vicinity of 100 minutes per month or less) it can often be cheaper to go for a non-contract prepaid phone rather than sign up for any contracts currently available for sale. System access fees are waived, and caller ID is included. (Voicemail charges are only the per-minute airtime, which is unfortunately double-dipped, charged once for people to leave messages, and then again for you to listen to them.) Otherwise, you're pretty much spot on price-wise.

Your experience regarding coverage in Thunder Bay doesn't fully reflect the situation nation-wide. There are counter examples of ares where Telus/Bell (who often share each others' infrastructure) have better coverage than Rogers.
