everyone is going nuts over the camera bump, and don't get me wrong, it's hideous. But the possible feature that's scaring me the most is the solid state buttons. If it's anything like the home button on the iPhone 7, it'll ruin the phone. I had constant issues with that home button, to the point of downgrading back to a 6 to get away from it. Apple, please keep the buttons as ACTUAL buttons.
I liked the 7’s button myself, but worry this will lead to shutting down or locking the screen when wet or something. They were supposedly going to have solid state buttons on the watch and that never came to fruition. To me that seems a better test bed versus finding out people hate it on iPhones..and if it didn’t work out on the watch…

I just hope the lower models that have lightning still are good. I’ve always used the pro models, but do not want usb c in a phone. Something you plug in every day at least with a port that loosens and wears so easily is just a recipe for trouble.
I get what you mean and had the same concerns but the way Apple does USB-C ports is for some reason different than pretty much everyone else. I have had USB-C ports loosen on me with time but none on Apple devices. The 2016 MacBook Pro we have is perfectly fine after plugging and unplugging several times a day for 5 years and still makes the satisfying click on plug in that most USB-C ports lose over time.

More of the same unfortunately. This is what happens when people buy anything, even with extremely poor design and aesthetic. Why does Apple care? They’re going to sell millions upon millions (and at a higher price) and they know it. They don’t care if their design is trash. Money is the only language capitalism speaks with.
Lots of folks consider Apple (one of the most profitable companies in history) to be a forerunner in innovative and aesthetically pleasing electronic devices and software interfaces— setting the standard for decades. Is it just this phone mock-up that represents the greedy capitalist version of Apple or are there other aesthetically distasteful and obviously money-only-driven products in their history?

THICKER camera bump?! There’s a reasonable solution to the huge wart that is the camera bump on iPhones. Look at Samsung or the Google Pixel. Apple needs a different approach, because the camera appears to be an afterthought that came at the end of the design process. It comes off as lazy.

that’s in recent history only; i don’t think they used to do such products before. new product meant new design breakthrough. but that’s very much discussed on here between jony ive’s departure and tim cook’s leadership. there’s no right or wrong and only so much you can do with a product so mature that you start circling back on its old appearances just like fashion does (12 bringing back flat edges for example).
design is very much about fashion and currently apple’s style is a lot more maximalist and utilitarian both in marketing talk and presence (so much power and specs talk compared to before) and that also shows in the way the products are designed.

Hard disagree. Actually not even disagree. This is empirically incorrect.

Buttons always fail. Especially iPhones ones. Solid state buttons and trackpads are consistent. Same click on year 7 as year one.

Nope. All variants of iPhone 15 will have USB-C. It's not just "Pro" thing.

And thats a good thing.

In a theory yes. In the reality iPhone 7 home button was far from perfect.

Also I did not see any iPhone with broken volume buttons yet... So probably not that big of an issue.

If I were Samsung I would start annoying Apple by making a thicker phone with no bump, and then brag about how it sits flat on a table and the battery lasts for days... I can imagine them doing a whole series of adds lampooning enormous bulges on top-heavy iPhones with batteries that barely last the day. If Apple had a non-bump version with a much bigger battery, I would buy it tomorrow.
But Samsungs way of mocking apple is to first *not* do what apples doing, then later do it.

Improved cameras don't mean a damn thing when they force their ****** post-processing onto the photos to make them look like garbage.

Yep. Important point that is often overlooked. "Best cameras ever" on paper means little if the software is ruining the photos.

You can shoot in ProRaw and get all the flexibility you want.

True, but RAW files take up more space and RAW needs to be turned on manually every time you take a photo.

I would like to be able to toggle it permanently on. I would also like to be able toggle HDR on or off, as you used to be able to.

I'm still rocking my 8 plus as my daily phone. Estimate I've hit the solid-state home button at least 50,000 times. Never had a problem with it.

I too would like to Samsung do this, if only to watch said product flop.

The problem is that a thicker phone with a larger battery is also a bulkier and heavier device, both to hold and bring around. As I stand now replying to this post while waiting in line to order breakfast, I am holding on to my iPhone 13 Pro Max. The thickness of the camera is immaterial here, only the thickness of the body and its weight.

Most people are also going to slap a case onto their phone, further increasing the thickness (which also partly nullifies the camera bump).

That’s why you design a phone around use case (eg: my 13 Pro Max lasts a day, so I am ambivalent to more battery life that I will never see or feel) rather than simply max out battery capacity just to win a meaningless spec war.

Ug! Can we please have a phone with just a "good enough" bumpless camera?

Not all of us want/need to take pictures/video at stupid high resolutions or need to zoom in to the molecular level!

Edited to correct my brain-fart.
But "Tech experts" on youtube will complain that camera is not better than 14, that will give bad piblicity and people will stop buying new phone, so apple has to show improvements.

I would take a thicker phone with a longer-lasting battery. #crazy.
Thicker phone, larger battery, more heat generated during charging, need more material in enclosure to dissipate heat, adding more weight.
Pro phones are already heavy.

Sadly I agree with you but it's too bad that the camera seems to be the biggest part of most new models. Pun intended, LOL
