Not a good trend I want to see, especially for flagships premium phones. Samsung already started it by not including any headset with the Note 20 lineup (although the pre order promo would get you their TWS buds).

Apple, considering their prices will be even higher than Samsung in my country, is not doing anybody any favor by taking out the EarPod and charger. It will only look bad for Apple. We have $200-$400 phones shipped with fast charger and headset, but not a $1000 phone? And yes, the price of the base iPhone 12 will be probably close to $1000 in my country.

And the environment angle is weak, considering that Apple is still shipping those chargers and EarPods separately as stand alone accessories. I mean look at those 5W iPhone chargers Apple has piling up in their stores.

Not cool Apple, not cool.

Let's be real. If Apple really wanted to reduce waste, they would stop producing and selling iPhones cases in a zillion colors.

Cases sell for $39 to $129.

Leaving out power adapters and EarPods saves Apple around $5 per box.

Yes, for people who NEED them. I, and likely millions of others have many in a drawer from past purchases.

they would also allow for imacs to be used as displays so they don't have to be thrown away when other parts become outdated.

People keep saying that including chargers and earbuds results in environmental waste because people throw them away...

Who in the freaking hell throws away chargers?? At least in my case, when I get a new device that has a charger I either just plug it in at a new location I frequent and leave it there so I can charge conveniently, or give it away to someone who needs one. The same goes for earbuds; I've given my girlfriend a couple pairs now that I don't use because she's hard on them and they break.

I don't know who these people are who throw away perfectly good hardware, but if they do exist they need to be slapped around with a large trout.

This would be ok if Apple was planning to change the lightning port on iPhone 12 to USB C. But having a proprietary port and then expecting people to purchase it is not nice.

Pretty greasy move if you ask me. I doubt Apple will deduct the prices of those accessories from the handset prices.
I would imagine Apple is trying to keep the cost down to purchase as the costs associated with parts & assembly will have increased. I’m sure many people will have chargers etc from previous and Have there own earphones

The chips and antennas for 5G are said to cost a considerable amount. They could add that cost, deduct the cost of the no-longer-included charger and headphones, and perhaps come out the same (I think the 5G parts are rather more expensive than the charger+headphones). And you’d probably complain that they didn’t lower the retail price.

Not just that that, it's all about the shipping / storage / packaging cost savings! Like a DVD case compared to VHS, they will be a fraction of the size.

When you multiply by millions of units, Apple will save a lot, a lot, of $$$'s.

Those plugged in extra chargers actually all use (a little bit) electricity, but multiply it with the millions Apple hands out every year and that's a lot of electricity. Unfortunately a lot of that electricity is produced by burning coal and oil that's very far from friendly to the environment.

The problem isn't your one copy, the problem is in the millions of copies that Apple hands out every year.

They include a cable to a standardised port, not a problem.

The majority will win, because they will already have an iPhone charger and that way they won't be paying more for the new iPhones (since the more expensive production will be compensated with fewer accessories). You're also helping the environment.

For those who don't have an Apple charger, it will be a bummer.

I don’t believe there will be any impact on what the customer pays because of this. They pick a price point that will sell the product. The fact Apple save a couple of dollars on a mass produced charger etc won’t change that price point.

Having said that I’m fine with them not including what amounts to a lot of ewaste for many people.

Looking forward to how they're going to spin this one. Maybe this is why Phil quit.
Courage.

No seriously. All the people saying, “yay! Better for the environment!” You know what would be even better for the environment? Not releasing software updates that purposefully nerf older models.

Yeah. I went there.

Remember when Apple as a premium brand? Now they're so poor with their $2,000,000,000,000 market cap that they can't even afford to include a charger so people can, you know, charge their $1,449 iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I'm a tech enthusiast and I don't even feel like I have many USB-C chargers yet. Especially the faster charging ones. My grandparents are in the market for a new iPhone and they have no idea what USB-C is and wouldn't know what to plug such a cable into if it didn't come included. I'd take a bet that half of people buying iPhones this year don't even have a USB-C charger laying around. Are they just betting that most people have wireless chargers by now? Because I feel like even that shouldn't be assumed. I've known people who didn't even realize their iPhone could be wirelessly charged.

3 things:

Get rid of the earpods. That’s fine. Most people have headphones any way and if not you can get them pretty easily and cheaply.

Get rid of the charging cable: That’s fine. People need different lengths any way and there are plenty of options out there.

Get rid of the charging block? No way. With different wattages and so many less than reputable sources, it seems like charging would become dangerous. The average person goes on amazon and buys the cheapest one they can find or finds one or gets one from a friend and risk frying the phone or starting a fire. What I think Apple should do is include with purchase a voucher for the retail cost of the 5w block. Customer can use it to buy one or apply it to the fast charge one. Or anything in the apple store. It amounts to a $10 gift card that will be spent on stuff that apple is already getting a profit (probably) on.
And am I the only one who remembers a few years ago how apple ran some campaign about only using their chargers because third party ones were starting fires? Guess that’s not an issue anymore.

Apple is acting like they're POOR.

The 5W charger they include with most models is useless anyway since it would take forever to charge the phone. Even the 18W charger in the Pro models is barely up to the task. So frankly getting rid of them is a good move since anyone who didn't want to wait overnight for their phone to charge was buying the 30W adapter (or a third-party multi-port high-wattage adapter).
I suspect the majority of people (myself included) charge their phone overnight, so even the 5W charger is plenty enough (and it is gentler on the battery at the same time). Those who need quick charging probably already have the setup they need.

I'm surprised as well. But I guess privileged people have their lifestyle...

Most other manufacturers have been able to add 5G without increasing price. Apple already has supreme bargaining power.

Xiaomi sells several 5G smartphones, including ones that cost under $250. And those models use Qualcomm modems.

Apple should just sell two different SKUs per each model, one without any accessories (not even charging cable) and one with all the accessories for $50 more.

That’s an awkward and confusing business tactic that offers no real benefit (Especially Given consumers likely don’t take advantage of the accessories as is), especially for carriers now having to stock two of the same model iPhones with two different configurations over $50 worth of accessories? Never will happen.

This is literally such a non-issue.

Apple has been selling USB-C MacBooks since what? 2015/2016? And USB-C MacBook Pros since 2016. A lot of people already have USB-C power adapters and computers that can charge them, as well as wireless chargers.

EarPods have been included foreverrrr.

I don’t think anyone will be upset.

If they're worried about waste, why don't they provide a code so you can redeem a charger or earbuds at their stores if you want them.

How would that help the waste factor when more packaging would be contributing to the waste?

if you are buying one on the go, I could see the issue without a proper charger, cable or even headset.

im not overly worried about it but the cost is just insane for a phone.
