Honest question.

Why?!

Have you ever thought “I wish my mobile data was faster than 4G. I don’t like waiting for X to load”?

You’d sacrifice battery life for milliseconds?
I'd be more excited for 5G if large crowds weren't banned right now. I'm fine with 4G LTE except for pre covid when we would go to concerts or such and it would be mega congested

Good. Waste of money and materials.

Last three or four iphones they both just stay in the box - I have zero need for them. Sure, some folks do use them, but lots of folks don't.

Reduction in e-waste is a good thing.

It is kind of Bull$hit to not include a charger, cable or earphones. talk about squeezing extra profit out ... someone spends about $1k+ on a phone.. give them the basics.

Thanks Apple for reducing e-waste!
Nothing gets under my skin more than empty, nonsense virtue signaling like this.

I think you shouldn't be allowed to make comments like this and not explain how it reduces so-called "e-waste" (a term invented by the biggest virtue signaling morons of our time), or explaining how doing so has any meaningful impact on anything.

"Uh it just does bro" is not good enough, sorry.

Do we really need an article on this topic so frequently? I've yet to hear someone argue that Apple WILL be including charger and earpods so why continue beating a dead horse?

Because look at the response this gets. Nearly 200 replies on a repeat "story". MacRumors makes money on advertisement and page views mean more revenue for them, so they're happy to repeat thin rumors.

Apple sold over 185 million iPhones last year alone. Most of those people are not new iPhone owners. Less than 40% of iPhones sold are to people new to the platform. They have chargers and charging cables. Much of those included with their new iPhones never get used and eventually end up in a landfill.

For instance, I have at least 20 unopened iPhone chargers, cables, and earbuds in a drawer. They will be heading to the landfill.

By not packaging a charger or earbuds with the phone, they reduce waste. Those that are new iPhone users can spend a couple dollars and buy one if they really need it.

Imagine being someone who tries to justify removing the included charger from a $1000 phone.

Just imagine.

My Porsche didn't include the upgraded stereo, and I paid $135k for it. I didn't find myself crying about it.

No need for immorality signaling, the answer is simple.

90+% of buyers are repeat iPhone buyers. We already have lots of headphones and chargers. We don't need more.

It’s all eventual e-waste, but Apple just cut it by thousands of metric tons. Quite virtuous, don’t you think? Nothing fake about it.

Maybe Apple can start a program to accept donations of chargers from those who have excess. Anyone who needs one can simply drop into an Apple store and pick one up for free.

That would show me their concern for the environment.

Lmao Apple is a corporation. Corporations cut costs all the time. How are users getting screwed? You know customers can be shareholders too right? It’s not going to backfire.
So if your a shareholder your not getting screwed as a customer? I sure feel that way. I expect to have long enough flex cable in my MacBook Pro so I don’t get stage effects on the screen for example. And I prefer to get headphones and charger with my phone because they usually break with time. I like Apple but don’t like where this is heading. I think this will be ok when wireless charging is available everywhere. But we’re not there just yet.

Apple does a lot of things really well. I’m not going to count them out or preach “doom and gloom” because they stopped including a wall adapter and wired earphones. That just seems ridiculous to complain about Lol.

There are literally so many other options and alternatives. I get that we all feel very strongly about Apple and Apple preaches being so morally sound, but at the end of the day this is literally not a big deal. They’re in the business of making money.

My favorite restaurant increased prices too and started giving smaller portions. It is what it is.

Once Apple does this Samsung will be right behind. It’s inevitable. Can’t be stopped. People will complain for a period, then it’s history. Humans are predictable. Everything is going wireless. Like it or not.

Full disclosure, I use AirPods and will never go back to wired, however, I’m not a fan of wireless charging.

I also have close to a dozen chargers I’ve accumulated over the past 12 years. In fact the charger and Earpods that came with my 11 are still in the box as I charge on my Belkin Lightning Port Nightstand charger (yes it charges my AW wireless.)

I have a hunch Apple has a good idea of the unnecessary waste created by the thousands of little white chargers and Earpods sitting in box’s, in drawers, and under car seats. I have a drawer in my home office desk loaded with them and all sorts of lengths of lightning cables. 😉

I find it hard to believe that Apple will introduce a new phone with no charger. I guess we will find out soon.

Not at all surprised. If Apple will short its customers when buying an expensive computer, then I'm not the least surprised if this rumor is true. The new 16" MBP I bought a couple of months ago did not come with the extension cord. Just the brick and connector from the brick to the computer. Fortunately, I tend to hang on to cables and cords. But no extension cord as usual? Come on!

The charger ought to be included at a minimum. Packaging a device with no way to charge it just seems wrong. It’s an inconvenience forcing new customers to buy it separately and seems like nothing more than a petty strategy to cut expenses and pad revenue.

Not everyone wants to spend the cash for AirPods. Not everyone has a wireless charger. I would say the vast majority of iPhone users don't have a usb-c charger and cable either. The lack of headphones, fine but pretty much forcing ppl to buy a charging cable is ridiculous. It would be a much easier pill to swallow if they did not include a charger on a later model with usb-c.
True.

I would think for a company that is sitting on so much cash they could—but why would they? People gobble up (myself included) on their phones.

I usually give my extras (when I’m upgrading which is usually on a yearly basis) to people who need it because I’m still using my old iPad brick with a usb to lightning cable to charge my iPhone 11 Pro Max @ work, and then the one in the box to charge @ home.

I have so much extras I actually use the usb plug with other companies’ goods... they only supply the cable... eg larq water bottle.

It’s bad for those who are brand new to the scene but for most I’d imagine, are people who already have half a dozen lying around easily (if they haven’t given it away already).

Not everyone needs fast charging. I have a Qi charger at work, car, home. My phone is rarely below 60%.

The current problem with wireless charging is that up to 80% of energy is wasted, compared to charging via cable. Google it, plenty of research on it.

So you're supporting the "green" policy of Apple whilst sending chargers to the landfill? They are not reducing waste! They are adamant at maintaining profits high. One charging standard and cable would have reduced waste.
Now more people will buy 3rd party chargers that are produced with less efficiency and more waste, then they will find out that the chargers don't work well, or they breakdown and will reach the landfill as well.

No comment about your Porsche flex and inept analogy.

How is your old charger of 5W (packed until recently) still reasonably useful in 2020 to charge a new generation iPhone?

Virtuous? How about making the iPhones USB-C 5 or so years ago? When the rest of the world was trying to move to one standard (led by EU) Apple could have shown COURAGE and lead the pack 1-2 years ahead.

Maybe Apple can start a program to accept donations of chargers from those who have excess. Anyone who needs one can simply drop into an Apple store and pick one up for free.

That would show me their concern for the environment.

spot on!
