Have been running without sound for a couple of years now - but will try again
Thanks - whenever it's convenient, I suppose you'll be resting for a bit now (congrats to the great result at the Berlin marathon! 🎉), I'm curious what you'll experience. In the meantime, I also tried checking in a CZ Apple discussion group, people commented that they have the same problem 🫤 the only solution is to switch AW to English (or another Siri-supported language), but it's not optimal, as the notifications aren't even remotely as good as they used to be before upgrading to 26. (For example pace range: before the notification would start with a "below/above/within range" note and then the actual pace; now it only says the pace - so you have to focus on / listen to the whole notification, while before, you could speed up / slow down after the first word. 😐)

Or he might have been anxious that using this feature would cause a reboot of his watch during the race. Yes, lots of reported issues on that.
Thoughts and prayers..? 🙈🫠

I'm glad that the bugs that annoy us here are so minor compared to all the troubles about which I constantly hear from the Garmin fanclub. The battery life is their ultimate argument - but then there's all the waiting for GPS lock and such... so while I really don't wanna sound petty, I admit that these stories do make me feel better / less annoyed by "our" bugs 😀

Thanks a lot - that was a HOT one...! I have been running around 15 marathons now, with some of them in the heat and some in cooler temperatures. That one was by far the hottest one, with a starting temperature of 21 celcius and rising during the day to 27! So not my fastest, but the hardest I have done in a LONG time - AMAZING city and crowd and the sheer number of spectators were great - Such a magic atmosphere!

Yeah and talking about battery - that part of the argument is totally gone for me. My Ultra 3 was put on fully charged at 8:15 PM Saturday - sleep tracking, ran the marathon (had over 70% left after the marathon) and used it for the rest of the day, sleep tracking again and now 40 hours later still 32% left - so easy an hour GPS today would be possible and go to the 48 hour mark.

Thanks for sharing the battery update.

My last travel race I took an AW S10 and my Coros (I pre-sold my AWU 2 for an AWU 3), but I’d love to simplify with just one watch for travel races.

Wouldn't the S10 have been a good race watch as well? I have been running at least 8-9 marathons with normal series watches - all the way from S0 (with iPhone in belt because it was without GPS) to the S2, S4, S7 and Ultra 1 - my race on Sunday with the Ultra 3 was a bit weird though - My second run with the Ultra 3 with the short shakeout run Saturday morning of 5K the first. Marathon distance was WAY off though, so hope it was just some initial calibration of the watch or something was off. Have read many saying the same thing, but weird with over 43,15 KM (a full kilometer too long is quite a lot)

I was a Garmin user until the Forerunner 945 and only once had a reboot. From what I hear and read, this reboot problems are a constant pain. Especially when you do something "special" like navigating a course or said PacePro features. Would be too risky for me during a race to have any of these features activated. But then the question is: what are these features worth when you have to fear to have such trouble during a race?

And there are also tons of bugs and glitches, in my last ride, my edge has stopped navigation instructions for 30mn after they came back again... why ?

My last Garmin Edge was a 820 (had a rock solid 800 before) and with the 820 I had constantly issues. Things like you wrote that navigation suddenly stopped or did repeat the same turn notification for kilometers. Also lots of reboots and also one time a reboot that ended in a boot loop and could only be fixed by factory resetting. Never again. So happy with my Wahoo Roam, no issues at all (apart from the GPS date problem lately which did not affect me).

I did three runs with my Ultra 3 now and can say that the battery usage (or capacity) is significantly better now. Where I had 1,5% usage per kilometer with my Ultra 2, I am now in the range of 1.0% per kilometer.

Might also be an effect of 5G instead of LTE.

Always on activated, cellular enabled and listening to podcasts while running.

Congratulations!
Some friends of mine were running in Berlin yesterday and they had big trouble with the weather conditions leading to disappointment (15-25 minutes slower than planned).

That's a great point - What are the point of great features if you have a fear of using them in a race

Thanks - had a good day all thing considered, but WAY too hot

On your first runs - were distance as it used to be with old watches?

Good point. On my first run, I was doing a structured workout so I had no autolap on. Distance to previous runs was about 30-40m longer than on runs with my previous Apple watches.

My last two runs I was wondering that the first kilometer was about 20-30 meters too "early" as it used to be. These 20-30 meters did not accumulate further until the end of the run.
Nothing to see in the GPS track except for that it seems a very little bit less "jaggy" than previous watches. But that is only visible on maximum zoom level and can also be a misinterpretation from me.

Did a quick check with bikerouter (a GPS mapping tool) and the AWU3 is closer to the reality on this first kilometer than all my previous watches (including all Garmins I ever had).

So everything fine.

Edit: checked my last run with my AWU2 (and actually my only run with watchOS 26) and interestingly it clocked in the first kilometer as early as my AWU3. Seems to be a watchOS 26 thing now, whatever this is.

And yours?

The GPS is not the only data source for distance.
Pedometer is also used.
Have you restored your previous Apple Watch data to the new one ?
If yes, it could be interesting to delete calibration data.

Yes I restored the watch.

But look at my edit, this seems to have to do with watchOS 26. Whatever happens there.

I don't like relying on the S10 to get me through an entire day that includes a marathon and music streaming. On race days I generally just wear the Coros (previously Garmin) and leave the AW at the hotel. I run with a small iPhone during races for after-race photos and meetups, so the two advantages the AW has when I run at home–LTE and Apple Music–are satisfied by the phone.

I'm surprised that your mileage was so far off. I measured 26.37 at Berlin when I tried to run the blue line, and then 26.61 when I didn't.

Super weird with the distance. Ran it last year as well (don’t remember if the route was 100% the same) with my Ultra 1 and had 41,90 km so actually a bit short

That’s pretty interesting actually. My first two runs were in an unknown area of Berlin and the marathon itself so had no real option to see if the distance was “as usual”.

Will check when my couple of test days are over and I’m back out

There are some apps that allows "in race" correction to have a more accurate follow up ...

I know - It's not the end of the world with difference, but just weird that it was maybe the worst it's ever been in that race - Hope it was just because it was run number 2 with the watch and a sort of internal calibration would make it better after a while

and a sort of internal calibration would make it better after a while

Maybe this calibration thing has nothing to do with outdoor accuracy and is only for indoor treadmill running. Nobody knows for sure.

I can confirm it's also useful for outdoor. It's a way to sync GPS data with motion data.
In the past, it was also the only to have accurate distance without GPS (series 0/1)

I can imagine in areas with no GPS reception like tunnels, but how do you notice in any other conditions? Serious question.

They somehow determine your average step length when walking with this calibration. At least that is what they say. I have no idea how they derive something out of that when running.

My AWU 3 arrived last Friday. I am getting over an injury so I haven't put in a ton of miles. But I did manage to get out for a few sub 10km runs and overall, I find the battery life to be MUCH better then what I had with my AWU v1. The battery capacity was at 83% before I sold it.. But with the AWU v3, I am quite surprised by how much is left after a run and also after a night's sleep.. So far so good.

Congrats @xDKP on Berlin.. My father was German. Been trying to get into that marathon for a few years now.. One day !

Some of my app users had an issue with distance precision that has been fixed by recalibrating the watch.
When running a workout, you can get pure GPS distance, pure pedometer distance and Apple HealthKit distance (which is usually nearest than pedometer one)
The accelerometer is pretty impressive to get these metrics (speed, distance, cadence ...)

Battery drain with 26.0.2 - has anyone noticed anything unusual? My AW9 can usually easily do a long run with plenty of juice left. But today, I've noticed that it dropped to 66% (from full charge) after ~25 warmup mins and nearly died on me by the end of my ~90 mins race (finished with 9% left). With no music or pace notifications. That's pretty unusual, it should hold at least 3x as much. 😒
