I've been reading many of the compaints in this post and I'm thinking if is a good idea to download the new version...

its better than sitting there waiting for a 50mb pdf to load with a blank screen :)

overall safari is much faster than I expected. Wish there is a way to keep the tabs bar open.

to keep the tabs bar open, go to the View Menu, then Show Tab Bar:)

I've installed S4 full on iMac to see how it was before installing it my MacBook (previously used S4 beta on both machines). My thought so far:

Cons:

- Darker interface and tabs on bottom make reading tab names just as difficult as in S3.
- I prefer tabs on top.
- No "make new tab" button if only 1 tab is open.
- Still no loading progress bar.

Pros:

- New additions to loading indicator are good. (would be better to replace it all with a graphite progress bar though).
- More fitting RSS button design.
- Less buggy.

In other words, I'm not installing S4 Full on my MacBook until Snow Leopard or some software update forces it...

Great improvement for me over the beta

glad to see the tabs back at the bottom as I was going to switch to firefox if they where stuck at the top.

just need to find a way to disable coverflow/topsites and i will be even happier

I use

COMMAND+{
COMMAND+}

to switch between tabs. Location does NOT matter.

You can actually use a much more convenient Control+Tab to switch between tabs now in Safari 4. And location does matter to some extent, especially if you have many, many tabs open. You gonna use that keystroke 20+ times to get to a tab if need be? Sometimes selecting the desired tab from the tab bar is much more efficient.

give me my tabs on top back. it was the only reason i was using safari.

Seriously?..... Seriously? That's pretty lame if you ask me. It's just tabs. And they are easier to manage on the bottom than on the top anyways.

Safari 4.0 was downloaded on my PPC G4 PowerBook 15" last night.
Bad news though. Safari 4.0 is crashing every time it opens, immediately.
Nothing fancy installed. Just the basics.
I've reverted to the previous Safari which I had archived just incase.
This happens too often. Apple releases software that just isn't ready for prime time, it crashes and one must revert to backup. Doing their part to keep minions fully employed.

I'm pleasantly surprised having not used the beta. Cover flow in the history is fantastic. But I did prefer the smaller tabs from before. A least they're in the right place ;)

Really annoyed that the tabs aren't on top anymore. Should be an option. I'm sure there is a plist edit for it but argh.

Personally I never liked the tabs on top anyway, and was glad to see it was not the default setting on the finished version. I was surprised that it was not included as an option in preferences though.

Btw, where's a "Stop" button???

EDIT: nvm, found it...right where the Refresh button appears shortly after... what an inconvenient location it is!!!

- No "make new tab" button if only 1 tab is open.

Double click on the empty space next to the tab and a new one will appear. Alternately, right click on the buttons in your toolbar and a "Customize Toolbar" option will come up. One of the buttons that you can add is one to make a new tab.

prefer tabs at bottom

Hooray!!! :D

And safari 4 final version seems faster and polished in some way over the beta but i cant say exactly - just feels better - i like it alot.

The tabs looks more polished/darker/clearly defined.

Hope they dont change it but put a pref in for those <weirdos> who liked it up top! :p

thanks! i feel like a complete idiot for not looking there. I was looking through preferences for it :X

but so far so good. 1password works with final now so I'm happy :)

now wishing ALL greasemonkey scripts would work ;)

also the reload button is now in the wrong place, miles away from the page forward and back , with no way to move it .... well done apple, yet another software backstep :(

Can't you just push escape to stop it?

I'm staying with the beta until someone finds a way to put the tabs back at the top.

what do u guys mean...i see in safari 4 that tabs are still on top !!!!! I like safari 4....coverflow of history & bookmarks top sites etc....are u guys just opposed to progress ????????

tabs on top rocked, tabs on bottom sucks

Tabs on top rocked for this reason alone. When used with WindowShade X they were incomparably cool... all you tab on bottom lovers out there haven't a CLUE what you've missed.

PLEASE GIVE ME BACK MY TABS ON TOP!!

(p.s. can ANYONE tell me where to re-download the Beta, so I can get my tabs back?? Maybe someone here has a beta installer I can borrow??)

I have no clue if this is legit... but I am currently downloading it to see.

Nevermind, it was for pc.

I really like Safari 4. Has replaced Firefox for me, but we'll have to wait and see how long that lasts. I was enjoying an ad-less internet for a very long time before today.

You know about Safari Adblock, right?

I have to say, I like the final build. The beta's simply were a no go for me due to the Messenger conflict, but knowing it's now fixed...

Also, I prefer the tabs on the bottom. Feels more connected.

The new loading bar takes a little to get used to but it does the job

I do have one issue with 4-

I added the "create a new tab" button on the toolbar, but when I close Safari then reopen it, the "create a new tab" button is no longer on the toolbar. I've reinstalled it a half dozen times, but each time I open Safari, it's gone.

Am I missing something?

It's probably a .plist problem. Try trashing the .plist file and redo all of your settings, that should do it.
