Every time I click a link, it opens a new window. I know I can ctl-click to have a link open in a new tab, but I'd like to just be able to click a link and have it open in a new tab. Can this be done?

Thx,
Steve

This is the main reason I use a plugin called Saft, which works with Safari 4. (Well I had to download a new version, but he got it out nice and quickly)

It also allows you to command+z to "undo" closing a tab.:)

How can I view ALL of my bookmarks?!?!? Has anyone figured this out yet? I hate the bar. I want them all in a window on the right side.

I'm loving the new browser but I have a question about bookmarks/bar. In firefox I had a thread in a forum bookmarked in the bookmark bar that would automatically update itself if a new page was created in that thread. So for example I bookmarked page 5 of that thread and by time I went back to it the next day it was already at page 7, the link was automatically updated.

Anyone know how to do it?

btw, love this site just found it not long ago.

Mac Mail is now unusable

I installed the beta yesterday and thought it was awesome.

Did anyone else have problems with their Mail.app crashing after you installed it? I had to uninstall the beta and then mail went back to normal... Anyone?

Yup. Not only did it fry my mail but it's created some kind of bug in flickr. and blogger.

Am I the only one whose Cover Flow does not work?

Cover flow has no flow - has some/most of sites, but pics are frozen.. Cover Flow Slider frozen. When I click on left or right arrows, it changes the highlighted site in the list below. Actual browsing seems fine.

Thanks,
Ray

anyone know if there is a way to manually add a site to the "top sites" view that would be a nice feature!

Open two windows, one with top sites and the other with your chosen site, then drag the webicon from the menubar of your chosen site into the topsites window. It pins automatically.

Lets be honest flash can do all these lame css tricks and more: and be much easier to make.

Flash is heavily overused, I'd much rather use Javascript and CSS to do cool site tricks; much much smaller files to download and run and it's much faster to edit content, links, whatever when all you deal with is code. And it's not nearly a demand on processors.

Apple.com is a fantastically interactive site, with very slick animations and page features. And guess what? No flash, just Javascript and CSS. All these new Web 2.0 social sites use no flash for any of it, Flash is just not nearly intuitive enough. I'll take CSS 3 and HTML 5 any day over Flash.

Look right...

No no, I know where it's supposed to be - it's not always there.

True, but the difference is that Flash is a proprietary, bloated, pointless steaming pile of manure, and "these lame ass css tricks" are open industry standards than don't need a lame assed plugin to work. I know which I prefer.

Questions:

I brought the tabs down where I "expect" them to be. But it no longer "always" shows the tab bar. It only shows it when there's more than one tab open. Since the preference menu changed I don't know how to re-enable that option. It is even possible? Ideas?

Also, the multi-touch gesture to zoom in and out is a little flakey. When zooming in it doesn't work until you open your fingers a certain width, then--ZOOM-- it zooms in all the way. Zooming back out goes in steps, but they're generally giant and you have no control over it.

Anyone else have that problem?

anyone having trouble tagging photos in facebook after the update? it is happening in firefox to so i dont no if it has to do with the download but i didnt notice it till after i downloaded it just curious if any1 else noticed it

Yeah. When I click on an area to tag it advances to the next photo.

don't know if anyone else found this, but there's two lines of code in the toolbar redesign.

Changing just one (the one below not the other):

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool NO

to

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool YES

Will take out the spinning wheel loading URL thing in the right (as standard on the Beta) and replace it with a blue pie chart thing in the left where the favicon goes.... just wondered if anyone else had seen it.

I also think that the redesigned look will make sense and look better, or more fitting, when 10.6 comes out.... maybe we'll all even hate how Safari 3 looked

Inline Progress Indicator [New]
Safari was the first browser to move the progress indicator into the address field, making it more visible and freeing up space for web content. At a glance, you can see exactly when a site is finished loading.

That doesn't seem like a description of the new spinning wheel...But it's labeled new....

Ive been a mac user for 2 years now and during that time I used firefox. FF has a plug in called unlinker which is handy when viewing directories... does safari have something similar?

Also is there a way to import my book marks from FF to safari?

Lastly how can I make it so when I click on an email it opens the link in a new tab.... not new window? I read some where to open terminal and type in a code..... but i dont know what/where terminal is at so can someone give me the turn by turn directions... thanks other than these little issues I like S4 so far.

anyone know if there is a way to manually add a site to the "top sites" view that would be a nice feature!

If you click the 'Edit' button on the lower left corner, you can manually drag and rearrange the 'Top Site' windows as well. While in edit mode, you can manually add a site to the 'Top Sites' by dragging the small icon at the far left of the address bar directly onto the 'Top Sites' pane. This will replace an existing window with the site of your choice.

Lastly how can I make it so when I click on an email it opens the link in a new tab.... not new window?

For now, holding the command key while clicking will open an email link in a new tab. Hopefully, we'll have the option of merely clicking in 'Preferences' by the time Safari 4 is released. At least we have the choice to make the new tab active, or not, at launching, in the 'Preferences' currently.

got a solution for removing the "+" button and adding back a reload there?

if i could get rid of the add bookmark "+" and put the reload back in that spot i'd be good to proceed.

moving tabs back to bottom helped loads.

I like how this is only a beta! Apple's betas run better than a lot of RC's I've used. *caugh*vista RCx*caugh* :D

On the note of suggestions, blue loading thing in the address bar is missing, but I feel like it's a bug.

This is off of the Safari 4 Features list

Link here: http://www.apple.com/safari/features.html#interface

Look to the right

I thought the exact same thing! This was listed as one of the features, and I had always though - 'what a clever use of space' - luckily I used the Terminal command to get it back.

I am trying to find a way to submit feedback to Apple here - but it should not be using the 'Bug' tool, as that sends off the current URL as well, but this is more general feedback... anyone know the URL for that?

I am loving it as a whole though - very impressive. Even IE8 seems like it is years behind already. Sigh.

Doesn't work with Active-x. Doesn't work well with .net or aspx sites. Fail.

I would say - WIN!

Any browser pushing forward the latest standards for rendering pages cleanly without old legacy OS-specific baggage and workaround hacks is fine with me.

Active-X is just awful for the web in general.

I have been using the Safari 4 beta since yesterday and so far I really like it. I have had no problems so far, and although it is the only browser I have on my computer at the moment, it is fast enough for my purposes. The only thing I am not too crazy about is the Topsites feature...I don't really need to have all the sites I visit end up there. Thats what my bookmarks bar is for, but I suppose variety is the spice of life.

Looks like "Tabs on Top" is coming to the Finder in Snow Leopard:D

Probably going to be added to other apps as well.
