Safari 4 Tips, Tricks and Special Effects

I wouldn't be surprised if Safari works really fast on OSX, FireFox works really fast on Linux, and Internet Explorer works fast on Windows.

Are these benchmarks tested on every OS available to see if they all work the same way? Hm....

You know, I wonder about this as well. I do find that the browser that comes with the OS seems to work better in the long run. Safari on my mac is for me pretty fast. On my PC desktop Internet Explorer while not the fastest, *works* better (as far as stability and website loading) than FF3, Chrome, and Safari.

safari 4 locked up my computer and totally was unusable.

i'm on a PPC G5 with less than 2 gigs of RAM.

looks like you need a really beefy machine just to surf the net with the new safari.

**sadly goes back to old browsers

It's working fine on my 1 ghz 1g ram G4, but with the Tiger download. Noticeably quicker on page down loads and no problems with Mail.

Don't mind the tabs location either after the initial WTF?

I had a WTF moment with the tab location, but i finally realized why they did it. Makes it so much easier if you have multiple safari windows open to see all your tabs...nice move Apple!;)

Edit: Does Safari 4 have a way to save sessions like Firefox when you quit? Also is there a way to manually tell the 'Top Sites' page what you want your top sites to be?

I have noticed no difference at all. I use IE8 and FireFox3 at work, Safari 3 at home on my iMac. Changing to Safari 4 (at home) has made no noticeable difference in speed. :(

Rich

I love the new tabs. It's more intuitive to have tabs at the top of a window. I hope they integrate this feature into other apps and Finder. Top sites is great too. That's one thing I like about Chrome on my office PC. I'd like to see the all in one address/search bar in Safari too.

Marking RSS Feeds as REad

I love the RSS aggregator but can't seem to 1) mark the articles as read and 2) see the indicator that shows how many new articles.

What I did was create a folder called RSS feeds and saved all my RSS feeds into that folder which is what I think the Apple site said to do. Anyone else having better luck?

I didn't like the tabs at the top to start with, but I'm getting used to it now!
The missing progress bar is daft though, the spinning circle is no substitute at all.

The 'Top sites' wall would be a lot more useful if you could manually add sites you want to it.
Anyone care to speculate on when Google Gears might be working with Safari 4?

You CAN add sites to Top Sites. Just open a new window (Keep the Top Sites window open), go to the site you wanna add, then drag the URL to Top Sites

Firefox killer for me is if Safari adds the options to "Save your Tabs" when you close the program. Or, it restores them if the program crashes accidentally. I cant live without that feature.

Glims will do this for you... (regarding saving the tabs when closed)

i cant even get S4 to open... installed twice then un-installed for good. it crashes before i can even get it to open. this is on a new unibody 2.53 with 4 gigs of ram :( looks like i will be waiting for the official release.

Both of these questions were answered earlier in the thread.

Here's one: Check out the seventh option down in the History drop-down menu.

+1
I love everything about Safari 4, except the ridiculous location of the tabs. Happy to get them back where they belong now :D

+1 :)

I hope Apple understands how impractical the new ones are… but it's fun that they "dare" to try new things.

Oh, and I hope they change the location of the refresh button! I want it to the left where they've put the (to me) useless "bookmark" button.

I'd give it more of a try if I could get AdBlock working on it, I'm just too used to browsing with Firefox and never seeing adverts

Safari Tweaks made easy without using Terminal App!

I found this thru "Accelerate Your Mac" website.

http://pointum.com/safari-tweaks.html

Without using the terminal you can just copy the downloaded "nib file" to the Safari package as instructed from the web page. This will add a "Tweaks" sub menu under the "Safari" menu where you can turn on and off many things in Safari.

For the tweaks download, look at the "Installation Section" and click on the "this archive" link.

Just follow the instructions which are super easy. Just remember to open a new Safari window (close the existing window) anytime you make a Tweaks change.

Enjoy!

It's in the Address Bar to the extreme right.

No, it isn't. I'm looking there now, I've got the address, a blue RSS button and NO refresh button. It. Is. Not. There.

And there is no Stop button while the page is loading, either.

Command+R has always been faster than using a mouse.

Command+T for a new tab, Command+W to close a window or tab, etc.

Breaking attention away from the screen, focusing on the keyboard, pressing Command+R and refocusing on the screen is not faster that reaching up to a Refresh button. Particularly when, as now, I'm eating dinner while catching up with the news. In fact, if I'm working on the PC too, my Mac keyboard isn't even within reach.
