Safari Team Asks for Feedback Amid Accusations That 'Safari Is the Worst, It's the New IE'

Most Industrial, commercial and university in-house software are made for Chrome and Windows based environments. Safari support is non-existent.

Also, most plug-ins free on Chrome are paid on Safari, all because Apple‘s greed.

Oracle stack works just fine on Safari.
SFDC stack works just fine on Safari.
Even the MS Office stack works just fine on Safari.
That's about all the commercial web software I need.

University stuff doesn't mean anything to me; that was long ago when VAXen roamed the Earth.

So is it edu software that's the issue? Wouldn't shock me.

I quite like Safari and use it exclusively with iOS and iPadOS (for browsing, not developing), no complaints here.

It's good that they're listening.

However, yeah... if something isn't working online (e-store etc), it's likely a Safari issue. I'll have to switch to Firefox to make it work.

I'm just here to say that the "[is]" is incorrect and changes the meaning of her tweet.

If anyone on their team asks for feedback, they should do it with humility instead of that tone and then rebuking people for bringing up old stuff. Very off putting and increases the resentment.

I don't see any issue with her posts. She's simply asking for constructive criticism and "rebuking" people who would rather just rant and rave about things instead of working towards a solution. People like that NEED to be "rebuked" so I applaud her for calling that sort of nonsense out. If they weren't humble, they woudln't be asking for feedback at all - instead they would just declare that the software is perfect as it is.

You are not a developer clearly. Note that this is coming from a developer advocate. The audience is developers.

Apple has a serious culture issue of ignoring bug reports. It’s been long documented.
Two observations. First need a indicator that feedback has been read by staff. Something to indicate it’s adequately documented, or rejected because it’s vague, or non descriptive. Second a way to flag feedback that merits increased attention because it prevents something working correctly after so many days of it not being resolved. Sometimes I think Feedback assistance is like Dear Santa. :D

This reply was rather head scratching

Macrumors for some reason makes ios run hot. Only website that does it, from my experience. Some bug in the javascript or something.
My #1 complaint period. I can literally see excessive battery usage happen with MacRumors running in a tab using iPadOS while on battery. You even see it draw energy in MacOS Safari also. The sites use of rotating scripts running continuously is awful. No other web site does this.

In any case, one example is that they need to work with their cloud team and fix the cloud tabs sync issue once and for all. Yeah, that's bringing up old bugs that THEY STILL HAVE NOT FIXED.

Or are the people the real bugs?
REBUKE: express sharp disaproval.

They requested, they did not rebuke.

Maybe I "think differently" like Apple's Safari UI creators because I think Safari is FANTASTIC.
It is FAST
UI is much more intuitive compared to Chrome.
Tightly integrated with MacOS, IOS, iPadOS
Did I say FAST?
I am a keyboard person, the shortcut keys very intuitive
Have been using Safari for 5+ years, I really cannot think of anything that annoys me
And lastly, did I mention FAST? REALLY FAST!!

Don't let the naysayers bring you down.

Im a light user and enjoy Safari but slowly things have been frustrating me. The fact I couldn’t look at a bank statement because Safari doesn’t have a PDF viewer was frustrating making me use Chrome. While watching Twitch, Safari eats up so many resources I get memory errors so I need to use Chrome for that as well. Some of the websites I need for work don’t display at all on Safari so Chrome it is again…what’s the point when none of the things I do work in Safari? I really don’t like Chrome but I have to use what works.

Start by separating Safari updates from OS ones on all platforms.
Something is broken for you with regards to PDFs. I view them in Safari just fine.

If you aren’t a developer Safari seems fine, but the only reason it seems fine is because developers have to jump through hoops to make many things work explicitly for Safari. It’s a colossal waste of time.

Many of you are misconstruing the context of Safari being the new IE… it’s purely from a development perspective.

Pro's - It integrates well with MacOS/iOS and the Apple ecosystem.

Con's - Everything else?

The #1 issue I have is that Safari killed extensions with version 12 when Ublock Orgin stopped working. I use Wipr with Safari but it pales in comparison to Ublock. That is Apple's fault.

Also one of the best features, "prevent-cross-site tracking" is the very feature that breaks a lot of pages for me. Turn it off and they work. Sadly they are important ones like Azure/Teams management websites which for me is important.

No multiple profile support. I have work specific websites that use a different login and Edge supports this. Chrome does as well and I believe FF does too.

Managing book marks is really weak. You can delete them or move them from a folder on the Favorites bar, like all other browsers. The "favicons" are not reliable and often disappear. No theme support at all. Each of my profiles in Edge have a theme (just color really) So I know that is my personal profile vs work profile.

If you work on Windows computers as well then Safari is just a no go anymore. Using Edge, Chrome or FF solves that issue and you move back and forth with bookmarks, passwords etc with ease.

It is sad really. I hardly use any of the built in OS tools anymore. I use photos and imessage. The Mail app....ugg. Notes works pretty well but again its not multiplatform and if you have to use iCloud web apps on Windows...god help you.

I think most of the complaints are coming from developers. I'm just a good ol' regular user and Safari works fine for my web browsing needs ?
100%. It’s web devs complaining Apple won’t implement features that try to make websites more and more like native apps. I for one am glad they’re not doing this.

I think Chrome is the new IE.

My biggest issue with Safari is that it only works on Macs and iOS. I do have a Windows computer that I use sometimes.

Before they reverted the UI changes, I'd say the that was the biggest issue.

That's on Apple to figure out the why/how of it all

One thing they could do is totally separate Safari updates (even major ones) from OS releases.
Fixes and tweaks need to come much faster for web browsers
They sort of do this now but it’s treated more as a beta. Safari Developer Preview gets updates at least weekly. I’ve used it as my main browser for years and rarely encounter any isssues.
