Safari Team Asks for Feedback Amid Accusations That 'Safari Is the Worst, It's the New IE'

You're part of the problem. Bajillions of devs write web apps that work perfectly well on Safari, all day everyday. It's fine to be lazy, but at least own it.
How is that his fault if Safari isn't standards compliant?

All the browsers are meant to be interoperating the same HTML and CSS rules in the same way. If something made works in Opera, Chrome, Firefox and Edge but looks weird in Safari then who hasn't done the work properly?

The UI in the new Safari is awful and unintuitive. On my iPad, it's easy to get confused when typing in the address bar or if I'm typing the Tab Search.

Apple has always been 'keep it simple/easy to use/yet good for Pros". Safari fails on the first two items there.
I made the Safari tab search error today on my iPad.

Well, we had to move away from Safari in our school because it simply no longer functions properly: Testing sites won't work with it, even if they say they should, audio cut-outs and bizarre network performance lag being the two worst issues. Open that same site, while Safari has paused necessary audio or refusing to load the next page, in Firefox or Chrome and *bang* it just works. Apple also hasn't provided the tools to education necessary to properly manage Safari through MDMs: Chrome and Firefox remain much more configurable across network installations. But that's pretty much just following the trend of Apple essentially forcing us to handle more and more of our education-based needs through non-Apple solutions. Even 6 years ago we never would have considered Chromebooks, but now it's something we review every year, since 75% of what our students do is already Google or Chrome based. Apple needs their "A" game back, but they no longer have even the slightest concept of what that "A" game should be.
I suspect Apple and Microsoft is going to be replaced in schools with Chromebooks since they are cheaper and are easier to lockdown/manage by the schools IT staff. But panjandrum‘s post proves why it is bad to have multiple web engines since it breaks functionality when you do not have one set standard.

Totally agreed. I have to keep a Chromium-based browser on my Mac to access pages that don't work properly on Safari (I use Brave because I absolutely refuse to install Chrome). But as you said, I think it's more the fault of the websites than Apple.

I'm wondering if this "contact me on Twitter" thing is something Apple is officially trying out, or just an individual effort by some developers. This is at least the second Apple developer I've seen ask for direct feedback on Twitter.
Hope you know Brave once got caught redirecting urls for cash.

something tells me taking suggestion from complainers will create a product hated by current users that like safari.

How to improve Safari: just warn before quitting the application with several tabs or windows already open. You may accidentally hit Command Q (quit) instead of Command W (close tab or window).

Safari has been a **** show the past year. Loved Safari but dropped it for FireFox. Had too many issues. It's not just developers. People that browse "casually" won't notice issues. People who actually use their browsers, will notice.

I've read a lot of the comments in this thread. I'm seeing suggestions based on personal needs. Not everyone wants something to work the way you want. I have no issue with Safari via macOS or iOS. I saw one comment that they wish the + to open a new tab was on the right side and not the left. I'm guessing they are talking about iOS as with macOS you can customize the toolbar. When you tap the option on the bottom right... they are correct, the + to open a new tab is on the left. However, if you hold on the bottom right, you get the option for New Tab. Chrome and Safari are the two most used browsers and while I love Firefox... similar posts are in it's subreddit. Saying it's becoming the new IE as most developers are focusing on Chrome and Safari. I did see some similar posts that I agreed with. They weren't really bugs though -- they were in regards to separating Safari from macOS updates. Make Safari updates like they do with the Safari Technology Preview. Those that switched from Safari due to uBlock Origin... I use Wipr and it works really well, but I also have network wide ad-blocking via Pi-hole. But, it still works great when I'm out of my home.

Unlikely they’ll replace Apple/Microsoft.

Sites may work well in safari because the devs have gone to the effort of working around the issues that Safari may bring up. Don’t blame web developers for the ( any ) browser deficiencies.

All browsers should stay current with the most recent web standards, it is up to the company in question to make sure their browser does. Hopefully no one wants to be responsible for the next IE ( which for a web developer was a nightmare ).

Can you please elaborate? I can see why the tweet was passive-agressive as when you see comments like this...

What are the "too many issues"?

I tried to use Safari again 2 weeks ago when Youtube modified their home screen with new popup windows when you hover over a video icon. But after 5-8 hours over 1 week I gave up with Safari again. It crashes Youtube vids midway through them (black screen) and doesn't load videos when scrolling down. The videos just don't load on the screen.
It's probably due to the extensions I have (Adblock Plus, Adblock, TabSuspender, DuckDuckGo) but I have the same extensions installed in Chrome and don't have any issues with Youtube. I'd rather use Safari (built in hardware decoding) for Youtube as hovering over videos now in Youtube will play them. I use extension h264ify to play YT videos so they don't burning up my 2020 MBA, but the extension doesn't seem to work for playing vids when hovering over them, so my fan will now turn on.

No, no and NO! I disable this on ALL chrome browsers we install. It's the dumbest thing ever. It's basically put there to prevent anyone for quitting Chrome so it can suck up all available resources for eternity. NO!

One more useless piece of junk setting I need to fix.

Seriously? that is so funny, no PDF viewer? There is a very good one built in. Chrome uses less memory than Safari? That is totally new. Are you talking on Windows? some of your web sites (there are some that restrict what browsers can be used because their staff does not want to test on any others, I know, right? but it is still a thing)
Let me clarify, it has a pdf viewer in the form of Preview but I can’t download a copy using that program even though there’s a little download arrow that’s supposed to.

As far as memory, pull up a Twitch stream and in 15min the memory usage will be nearing or well over 1GB and climbing. Normal browsing Safari is great but why can I download a pdf in Chrome and have a normal experience in Twitch vs Safari?

If there is a "New IE"; it is definitely Chrome.

Safari is light, fast, and privacy focused. It was a little scary when they threatened that horrible new interface; but they happily stepped back from the brink.

Apple: what needs to be fixed besides the broken things that you have already reported for years and still not have fixed?

Users: well… those things are important. Let me find something else that is not a problem so you feel better

I typical like Safari but they way it handles certain websites on Mac OS is always befuddling. I feel like at least half the websites I regularly visit (this site included) blow up the ram when using Safari and either bog down my system or auto reload. This never happens on Chrome. I wish I could use Safari more but this issue is prevalent enough I don’t know that it comes down to bad code on the website side of the equation, but I’m not a developer so I can only share my end-user experiences.

The only dealbreaker for me is/was problems loading/presenting Captcha walls. Some other browsers have superior security features but Safari is sufficiently secure for me.

Tabs? What's a tab?

I still command-click to open new windows. Just like I did in Netscape 1.0N.

Also have been using Safari since Dave Hyatt started the Surfin' Safari blog. Was a huge leap forward from OmniWeb.

Still using Safari. Still love it. Not sure what the whining is about - it's fast, it works, it's stable.

The only Safari issues I have are:
1) The fact that a Google Sheet or some graphics-heavy page opened in Safari will sometimes pop up the "This page is using too much memory and will reload" though this happens a lot less lately on the latest macOS. (Occasional)
2) When using Apple's new OTP feature, sometimes it will try and fill in all 6 digits of the OTP into the first digit field instead of filling them out one per field. (Rare)

I use Safari daily on macOS and iOS and it’s been working great for me. I have no complaints.
I use Safari daily on Windows 11 and it’s a hot mess.* And, because it doesn’t work on Windows it won’t natively sync with my other devices. As a result, it simply can't compete with other offerings.

*Obviously, no I don’t.

I've been browsing this site for about an hour. With just the one tab open, Safari is taking up 198.6MB of RAM on my M1 Max. Are you on Intel? What version of Safari?

I have to wonder if it might be some errant ads. My experience is a LOT of bad experience on the web turn out to be "bad actor" ads. Some ads activate a bunch of network connections and save local data to try to track you. This is why I pay for any websites I frequent directly and turn off all ads.

Safari has a PDF viewer. I view PDFs in Safari all the time. (I don't have Adobe or any other PDF reader installed.)

They do...

Letting you install certain updates from an OS version upgrade is not the same as individual updates, if it was Safari wouldn’t be at version 15.
