Enemies? That's a bit of a strong word, I think sticking to 'competitors' is better.

Spot on.
The only people who think in 'enemies' terms are people who live on technology lists and who seem to have confused their identities with their gadgets. On all 'sides'.

I got to the bold and stopped reading. That's all I needed to see to know that you're just another spec ***** who doesn't understand reality vs. concept.

And what part of me owning an iPhone 3GS and upgrading to an iPhone 4S don't you get ?

iOS doesn't multi-task 3rd party apps. Something I'd like (I love pull rather than push notifications and would rather the devs have a bit more freedom in what they do in the background).

How does that make me a spec whore ? Multi-tasking of 3rd party apps is not a spec, it's a software feature that would improve usability for me.

I'm buying an iPhone 4S, but I also realise that I'm not buying some kind of super up-to-date phone.
You mean cell tech. The phone overall is state of the art. Don't be silly in your quest for semantic perfection. You know why Apple didn't include LTE, only one provider in their main country offers it, and very sporadically.

I hate to belittle the possibility of these companies doing something "nice" but to me it all sounds like, "this is a great excuse for delaying our release while we work like crazy to "catch-up" or put together a better product to actually compete with Apple's new phone. All the while making ourselves look good."

This is not respect - it's politics and PR.

The product i most likely finished, I don't think they could do much more work on it. Also, the report says the actual launch wont be delayed

These two(Samsung and Google) are just ******rs. I bet in they presentation they script was to attack SJobs as they always do.

Apple attacked the company, not the persons. Thats a big difference. Vic Gundotra attacked the person, that is just plain wrong. f them

Do you have any examples of competitors attacking Jobs personally and not the company Apple?

there is only one reason for the delay. the galaxy s 2 just came out and they were going to rush this to compete with iphone 5. since there was no iphone 5 they are delaying this till it is fully baked

GS2 has been out for quite some time in many places

Actually no, it does not destroy the 4S in any respect at all. The iPhone 4 is leaps and bounds ahead of it, the 4S...lightyears. The fact is, it's still using Android which is horrid in every way. Difficult, non-intuitive, resource hog. It's just another garbage device that will get lost in the sea of junk android phones.

That's only your subjective opinion, you don't even have the statistics to give your opinion credibility so don't try and spout it as fact

It sickens me how many of you trash Google and Samsung. No matter what they do, you fanboys keep twisting it to make them out to be evil. You would probably find some evil alterior motive if they invented the cure for AIDS.

Anyone think the iPhone 4S release was delayed for the sheer purpose of being released around the time Steve died? I mean if you think about it, they could have easily released it in June.

I feel the same way, it's ridiculous to cancel on account of this, especially when they are competitors. It's not like Samsung/Google had anything to do with his death. The first time I saw the keynote was after Job's death and there were lots of people smiling and laughing and joking. It was a bit surreal that around 24 hours later, the death would be announced. Who even knows the exact time of passing?

I read in one article that he died at 9.59am California time which is almost 24 hrs to the minute that the keynote started for the iPhone 4 event

Only Apple fanboys would be complaining and looking for a conspiracy theory when the competition shows respect for Steve.

I totally disagree.Listen to what you said, if they meant anything of what you said and they pulled the plug on it, guess what? Thats respect...Jeeez

Not wanting bad PR is not the same as respect. Not that there's anything wrong with them going after Apple hard during normal times, just that now it might leave a bad taste in people's mouths.

Of course, I'm just guessing here. Who knows? Maybe they want their marketing to better target Siri and iCloud. Maybe their launch team came down with hantavirus. Or maybe they did do it out of simple respect. But there are alternative explanations.

I don't believe for one moment they are delaying their launch due to Steve's death. These are competitors, not partners. The can pay their respect at his wake. Apple certainly didn't delay their launch. This probably has to do with these companies checking out the camera and/or Siri in an attempt to make themselves a better product.

Good. Give credit where it's due. All these also-rans owe a huge debt to Jobs. Finally they're actually giving something back instead of just taking and taking and taking.

Never miss a chance to slam Google, do you?

Doubt it, they would have sold more iPhone 4S's in the 4 months gap than they are going to sell on account of Steve's death

how is the 4s behind the SGS II or the SGS II HD????

Where did I say the 4S was behind ? I said it catches-up to the SGS II and SGS II HD on some level (though for the HD and Nexus Prime, it is behind on a few key points, especially in the CPU/Screen arena).

The Apple keynote was the day before Steve died, of course they couldn't delay it in light of an event that hadn't happened yet

Apple fanboys, always looking for a conspiracy when there is none to be found.

It's quite interesting how many posters here immediately resort to ad hominems once someone points out some uncomfortable facts. Mind you, I'll upgrade to a 4S as well, but grudgingly, since I've invested so much in my apps I can't really switch anymore. But everything KnightWRX has said is spot on.

Actually, I think it's more likely that it's the fans of these companies who don't realize that.

It's the "fanboys" who make it personal, whereas the people creating these products know (for the most part) that the competition is just business. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates never hated each other like Apple and Microsoft fanboys have hated each other.

Very true. I mean I'm sure some heated discussion have come up, such as "how did they get to market before us on X?!". But I doubt the silly, childish rants we see on these boards is indicative as to what really goes on.

SJ lead the way in this area, and they've ALL benefited from it immensely. It's like pro athletes. They compete hard on the field, but in the end some are good friends, and have played together on the same teams...there's a mutual respect.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Guys... By delaying they get positive press. By not delaying they get almost no press as the coverage of Jobs, his funeral, iPhone 4S, iOS 5, and iCloud dominate the media. This isn't respect, it is savvy and you know who would respect that? Steve.

Lol @ People trying to find some ulterior motive behind this.

You know the top two guys at Google Page and Brin, have the up most respect for Steve Jobs. Maybe they think holding off on their event which would be an attack on Apple and the iPhone is poor taste?

That's nice of them, I guess.

I hope they really did postpone out of respect and not for publicly/trying to build hype.

It's both respectful and good business. Steve Jobs was an icon, and there will be publicity about his funeral next week. Plus it would be seen in poor taste if they had a presentation that had anything that remotely (even unintentionally) had anything that could be seen as a knock on Steve Jobs.

This gives them a chance to re-work anything in the presentation while still highlighting the differences, lets some time pass, and probably has no impact on the actual phone's release (which wasn't necessarily going to be Tuesday, anyway). Plus, it's the right thing to do.

Wow... this was a big event for these two companies. Definitely a classy and respectful move. Google and Samsung just got boosted in my book of opinions.

I think it's just publicity... macrumors, engadget etc. report about this "honorable" move and people get more excited about it. And they promote their "don't be evil" mantra!
It doesn't get better when they announce it today or in a week, Steve is unfortunately dead anyway :(.
