Is it just me, or is Samsung's choice of monikers for their devices completely impossible to follow? Is that a marketing strategy of some kind?

I have what's called a "Galaxy Tab 7" at home that I got for free from my ISP. I have no idea what generation it is, as I think more than one kind exist.

No more confusing than Apple's I guess.

I've got a 15" MacBook Pro. Can you tell me what generation it is just from its name?

Oh, Samsung. Just had to be first, huh? It's like Apple has said many times (most notably Phil Schiller), "It's not about being first, but the first to do it right." So you have a fingerprint-reading tablet family? Great. Apple will as well in just a few months and it'll knock yours out of the park because it was done right instead of first.

I'm all for technological diversity and an arena filled with competitive products (see my profile tagline at bottom), but Samsung is a living joke. They're like children who can't accept losing at things so they become the bully or that weird kid who just sits in the corner and stares at other kids. It's just getting amusing at this point.

Are you a kid or something? Apple does it right? Yeah, sure. Apple certainly did it right by crippling the email to the point it cannot even add attachment files properly. Or initially having those annoying popup notifications which Apple later change by copying Android pulldown notificatin. Or having a sham centralized settings which you need to exit your app to access and also face with the ardous task of finding the settings you want in the very long list. There are many more I can give but I dont think there is any point to it.

iPad success is not only on the hardware, but in its software also. Other tablets are years behind in their software. You can't just put all the new technology on a device and say that you gonna hit the market. Their UI is very uncomfortable. While at iPad everything works as it should and there are thousands exclusive apps which can do amazing things. And btw. iPad also winning on Hardware.

Tablet is the world of Apple.

I'm sure Samsung wrote their entire program for SideSync in the few days it's been since WWDC...

SideSync isn't even a new product - it's now on version 3 and has been around for at least a couple of years (it used to be only available on Samsung PCs but is now available on any windows PC).

It's actually quite useful and works by either displaying the phone's screen on the computer screen (and allowing remote control of if, including routing phone calls through the PC) or by allowing the computer's keyboard / mouse to control the phone directly

This isn't vapourware or future stuff - I'm using it right now and can make calls or send texts, etc from my computer connected to my phone

It doesn't look like an iPad Air. It's a completely different aspect ratio, the back material is different, and the home button isn't round.

Look, touch screen tablets are going to be rectangular slabs of glass with bezels. You can't patent that form factor any more than you can patent laptops with screens on hinges.

Apple had a case against the original Galaxy S because a lot of the UI was a wholesale ripoff of iOS, down to the application icons. They specifically modified stock Android to make it look and function exactly like iOS.

If this Galaxy Tab S qualifies as "ripping off", then iOS 8 certainly qualifies as ripping off Android, and the 5C counts as ripping off Nokia.

Nope, there are details in the design that clearly remind one of the iPad Air. The thicker top and bottom portions of the bezel, with the thinner sides, rounded on all corners--this is a combination apple initiated with the iPad mini and air. Now samsung had two tables that match it. The home button is rectangular instead of round, sure, but the general design reminds me immediately of apple. Lg doesn't do this. Amazon doesn't do this. Samsung is less afraid of using a great design that admittedly is apple's.

Some of you are fighting as if you are getting commission off the company you are fighting for :D

Samsung has lost me with all their tablets. Say what?
End of the day, it's an individual choice! Good luck to both companies meeting the needs of a user.

How many tablets has samsung released? I feel like they update them every 2 months......and i've never seen anyone actually buy one.

I can't say I've ever actually seen someone buy an iPad. But then, why would you? Unless you hang around the tills of various high street electrical stores...

But I agree, Apple's simple model line-up makes it very easy to choose. Other makers have so many it's very confusing to know the differences.

And Nokia had this years and years ago with their PCSuite, in fact Apple Sync in OS X 10.3 - 10.4 used to be able to do this, i.e. Send SMS's and Type SMS's via your phone, granted it needed a USB Data Cable or Bluetooth but I used to do this with an Ericcsson K800i Phone :)

What's so great about a company like Samsung who copies and doesn't care. Why is Americans buying Samsung products when their own American company Apple is having it's products copied.

I'll never buy Samsung again and gave my Samsung TV away just to get Samsung name out of my house.

Is it specific to samsung or can one use it with say a motox?

Just wow.
I think it is time to replace my sh.tty ipad 4...
I am very dissappointed in apple's ipad, crashes a lot, browser is simply unusable because of 1gb RAM (LOL), very often reloads the pages and if you tipe a message in on page and go to another for information when you go back it reloads the page and your text disappers. What is this sh.t?

This Samsung tab kills ipad in many spec.

Yet another 8" tablet that is designed to be used like a phone?

Looks like phone functionality had been sacrificed, if my understanding is correct. I have NotePro which has phone functionality very useful for me as a second number with unlimited Internet connection as a backup

LOL.
iphones and ipads are far more Chinese than American...

My iPad 64 GB cellular 3rd gen started crashing more often and I replaced it with 12.2 Inch Note Pro, I have phone functionality, stylus etc...in addition to better & bigger screen for almost less than ipad air 64 gb cellular edition. I could use it with Microsoft wedge keyboard and mouse, like a little laptop at client place without having to take my heavy MacBook Pro.

At the rate that Samsung releases devices who can keep it all straight?

Currently they have the following 8.0" - 8.4" tablets for sale on their website:

Tab S 8.4
Tab Pro 8.4
Tab 4 8.0
Tab 3 8.0
Note 8.0

While I applaud Samsung's efforts to try and meet different needs, they are really just confusing the average customer.

You're absolutely right! Samsung's nomenclatures are just sooo confusing, even for the enthusiasts.

The Tab S screen looks outstanding. I would love to have an iPad with an AMOLED screen! Apple has to get rid of this rock aged screen technology, known as IPS Led! IMO it's the only advantage of Samsung's gadgets. (I don't like the plastic build. To me, Sony wins in the smartphone niche with its Z2) Although I preffer android for smartphones, the iOS really shines on the tablet market. (I use tablets mainly to surf the web, draw and play games, so android's freedom isn't really needed here)

How wrong you are. I have a Note 10.1 with a keyboard and along with the pen input is the best tablet I've ever owned. I get more done on the note than on any phone or any other tablet (and I have an ipad3 and a nexus 7).

I agree they have too many tablets but hey people love choice so if it's successful for Samsung then go for it.

As much as I love samsung phones. Samsung really just needs to stop making tablets. They are crappy and subpar apps are available for them. They should stick to making phones.

Samsung and Android are just awful together and the hardware still looks like an apple rip off. If they had to design without influence it would be a much different device and you would naive if you thought any other way.

we're still in the infancy of tablets they have become the new people's computer after the PC and laptop before it.

I suspect this is just the beginning but interconnected devices is the key to long term success, that's been apple's focus as the hardware has very little place to go now. Samsung are still not understanding that android is just never going to be good enough to be able to get the device to work in that connected way.

Based on the accompanying pic., do the Samsung logo and home button(s) re-orientate dependent on whether you're holding this thing landscape or portrait?

What makes you think that, the fact it can answer phone calls?
So if I follow your logic, any iMac running Yosemite is also supposed to be a phone?

As for the "you can answer your phone from your tablet", let's see how it's implemented. Though I'm thinking it's a rushed development.

You're not very observant are you? Perhaps you should LOOK at the pictures of the tablet before commenting in future? Just a thought.........

Nope, if you look above the Samsung logo there is an earpiece grill. And I would literally laugh if I saw you using an 8" tablet as a phone for real.

It's a shame Samsung is reverting to these awful PenTile displays.. They had Super AMOLED Plus ones for a while that had real RGB pixels.

Even at super high res I can see the jagged PenTile edges, I'll never go for a display like that. Its good for Apple though, easy to compete :) LCD is definitely better than a PenTile AMOLED. Only if both are full RGB it becomes more of a draw IMO.
