I'm not one to defend Apple when they pinch pennies by offering lower specs for the same price (RAM in all devices, SSD in Macs). But megapixels have been a bogus marketing number for well over a decade. The real test will be what Samsung's image processing can do with all that data - and I wouldn't be surprised if they do a pretty good job based on past years' comparisons. But it won't be because of the megapixels. That's just for marketing.
it’s because the lens is too small , honestly anything over 12mp for a camera phone is just over doing it. That includes the 48mp in iphone 14 pro max

If they could maintain the 48MP but make the image sensor larger with larger image sensor pixels then it would physically help improve image quality without changing the algo of computational photography.

200 Mega Pixels Camera? Holy smokes!!! Not going to lie that is insane and impressive. Competition is a good thing!
Yes, competition is brilliant on stuff that are not gimmicky. In a world where 99% of smartphone users take family and personal photos to share on a social media only, how useful is a 200MPX camera is going to be? I can't imagine many Galaxy phone users taking photos to be displayed on billboards.

Personally I'd probably not use most of it, just like I haven't used most of the gimmicks Apple has introduced over the last few years, but I just watched the Verge's 10 minute compressed version of the event and I will say this:

There's plenty of stuff in there that sounds cool that people here would spend page after page defending and promoting if this had been an Apple event. The same goes for the recent Pixel event, where Google did introduce some really neat features I'd actually like to have on my iPhone.

I mean, I don't disagree that 200MP sounds like a marketing gimmick, but let's wait for the first real world tests of the camera before we dismiss it?

I think you didn't understand my comment. I am only not convinced with the megapixel race, that's all. Even with the iPhone megapixel increase on the iPhone 14 I find that gimmicky. There is a reason why some of the most expensive full frame cameras from high brands stick with 24 Mpx or even lower. Higher megapixel does not translate to better image, matter of fact I would argue that it does the opposite.

Yeah, I might have jumped the gun there a bit. Looking at the rest of the discussion I stand behind the broader point, but you might not have been the best person to address it to.

Even though Samsung Galaxy is considered premium alternative to iPhone, it still feels like a mass produced brand with its ultimate goal of how many can we spit out. Apple is the same, but I feel like I get more value for money in the long run. Well integrated ecosystem, guaranteed software updates, healthier, vibrant app ecosystem, it just works and hardware just last darn long.
One man's integrated ecosystem is the nexts forced lock-in.

All those Galaxy's whistles and bells and yet STILL will get short OS updates & support which is why I brought iPhone 13 PM 256gb in October '22 because I know that it will get FIVE or more years of iOS updates.

But once the future iPhone gets the Space Zoom, I'm in!
So you think the opposite of the truth. Samsung guarantees five years of OS updates and Apple makes no guarantee.

It's not that difficult to do for Samsung. Their ecosystem includes everything Apple has and then some (like portable SSD drives, washers, dryers, refrigerators, etc.)
It's actually the Samsung ecosystem AND the Google ecosystem.

Every device in my home (Apple computers, PCs, iPhones, Android phones, etc.) can stream via Chromecast, whereas the airplay speakers are useless as they only talk to a subset of devices.

My only response is to ask how many Apple-provided apps are uninstallable. It's really the exact same situation.
Just decided to look and see on iOS 16.3 I can’t delete

  1. App Store
  2. Messages
  3. Phone
  4. Photos
  5. Safari
  6. Settings (if you want to count that as an app)
I’m at work so I don’t have my Samsung Tablet with me so I can’t check that.

Not really. Their hardware is decent, but the OS is trash. Because of that, I will not even consider Samsung for a second.

But there are better Android phones out there. Google Pixel is the closest you can get to vanilla Android, and people really like the Xiaomi phones.

Think of the file sizes! I really don't want a 200M pixel camera, I have no use for it: no one does Post processing will be a nightmare and you'll need a huge amount of memory for nothing.

You do, actually. If the camera is a REAL high resolution camera, you usually can zoom in and out and select the cropping you want, because there's less of a resolution loss when you zoom in. A high-end Sony DSLR camera with a real telephoto lens can hold a good quality with even 100x zoom.

That means that if you shot someone from afar and want to get a close-up of their face, it may be reasonable doing it.

But REGULAR users usually don't know or want to use those zoom features. In average scenarios, no one takes photos of a birthday party from a few kilometers away.

Interesting.

But there’s zero chance I’d ever run an OS provided by a company whose business model is egregious tracking at data brokering. Blows my mind how people seem oblivious to this because of the shiny new thing in front of them.

This is a fabulous phone. Anyone who thinks that Samsung OS is laggy are stuck about 10 years ago and probably haven't used one but are just putting the comment down after hearsay and don't really know. Shame really, phone lagging is well in the past. Before the flaming starts, have a look at what I own in my sig, I have also owned Samsung, Pixel and before that, Nexus products.

More like they use their middle range / low budget phones. Have you ever used the A10? It's atrocious.

Nope, never used one but the comments on this topic are all aimed at the flagship phones that compete with Apples flagship offerings. I stand by all my comments above, if people want to compare, they should do like for like.

I agree to an extent.

The average user will look at the midrange phones and think the whole Samsung experience is like that.
They won't compare apples with apples.

Samsung doesn't have to use the latest and greatest processor in their low-budget / midrange phones, but they should make a higher effort and make sure they at least run the base system smoothly, and that it doesn't get so slow over time that it's painful even to type a phone number.

For example, midrange Motorola phones are clearly not powerful, but they will give you a MUCH better experience doing the basic stuff even after one year you bought them.

With 0.56 µm pixel size I don't think this wide angle camera will produce great shots in low light. Guess we'll have to see ourselves when the photos come online. Which will be difficult to judge due to software, browser, reduced files et cetera.

Yes, that's fair enough, I can't really comment because I have never used their mid range offerings and accept what you say. I have used Pixel and Nexus which could (price wise) be classed as mid range and these work/worked flawlessly with no lag or stutter so, you are probably right, Samsung could/should up their game in the mid range. I bought my iPhones simply because it integrated better (much) with my hearing aids and now, although I would be tempted to go back, am rather stuck because I was tempted to buy the most excellent Apple Watches, having said that, I still have a Garmin Fenix which is probably a step up (in my opinion, I know others will disagree).

Well, I for one am in full agreement on that! Garmin completely nails it with their higher end watches. It's like Apple isn't even trying to make a sports-first watch. I mean, the bloody thing doesn't even come with ANT+. Talk about not understanding your market.
