They can bash all they want. It's utterly RIDICULOUS to NOT be able to change your own damn battery in a phone in 2014. The ONLY reason you cannot is simple GREED on Apple's part. They want to charge you $100 to change your batteries in the iPhone and iPod Touch (over 1/3 the cost of the whole damn device with the Touch). It's a real problem too. My battery in my iPod 4th Gen Touch never did get the kind of life I thought it should and while my 1st Gen iPod Touch keeps on kicking with 10+ hours of battery life doing basic things plus music, my 4th Gen iPod Touch can die in as little as 10 minutes with the display on just showing photos! $100 to fix the problem? I can get a new 5th Gen one for $299!

Apple is GREEDY. They need to stop being greedmongers and start doing reasonable things. My 2008 MBP had a changeable battery and easy to swap ram plus expansion ports galore. I still use it for music recording and when I go on trips. I even added a USB3 card for only $10. They've replaced THAT great machine with one that has like four ports total on it, no optical drive, no Gigabit LAN (without an adapter), no Firewire, no NOTHING except darn near worthless (as in few expansion items available and all are overpriced) Thunderbolt ports, which also share the video output so they're a PITA. How is that better? Retina? It's not even close to 4K.

Apple is falling behind and everyone is starting to pass them by. They're no longer a leader or an innovator. They're slower, cost more, no longer offer half the pro software they had just a few years ago and now they're copying the competition more often than the other way around and that just strikes me as pathetic. While Apple is doing a continue on your Mac feature in Yosemite so you can switch from iPad to Mac and back, Microsoft is offering a machine that *IS* a Pad and a full blown computer all-in-one. WTF can't Apple do that? They could have done that the same year the first iPad came out. No no no. That would cannibalize sales for the new market! We need to bleed those consumers dry!

Yep, Apple is far too greedy for its own good these days. You only need to look at the fact their iDevice cables sell for £15 and their laptop chargers sell for £65 despite the fact both of those are very prone to damage. And when the cables inevitably break Apple will tell you it's user damage and make you pay for a replacement.

And now they've bought Beats which makes perfect sense. What better fit for Apple than a company selling badly made $14 products for $200?

Without Samsung, this world would be a boring place! They keep us entertained with jokes. Galaxy is a bigger phone than iPhone thus includes a bigger battery.

UPDATE:

iPhone 5/5S: 1440 mAh
Galaxy S5: 2800 mAh

Like I said before, that's twice as much power but a slightly bigger screen.

Battery life:
iPhone 5/5S: 8.7 hours
Galaxy S5: 10.3 hours

94% more battery capacity, but only 18% more battery life? Lol yeah awesome bang for the buck.

How often do you change your computer's parts? Who cares.

Real computer users don't give two craps about changing this and that. They're too busy actually using the computer. I've added RAM to my PC exactly once in 10 years. So I bought all that expansion room for nothing. Time for Macs.... they are so far advanced in their hardware anyway that it's YEARS before you need to beef it up.

And by advanced, I mean the machine is fast.... but not necessarily a spec queen. What good is a 1000 hp car if it gets 5 mpg?

Galaxy S5: 1158 (only 11% faster? - lol)

That posting takes the cake! Congrats!

I must not be a real computer user then. I upgraded every iMac or MBP I have had when it was still possible.

Upgrade RAM because the prices you pay at Apple are robbery: check
Upgrade primary HDD with a faster Hybrid Drive: check
Change hardly used DVD Drive with another HDD for internal storage, so no need to connect external HDDs when doing Video Editing on the go: check

Me thinks that you don't really know what a real computer user is.

Not hard to get high benchmarks when your processor only has to power a 640p display and an OS that doesn't allow true multitasking.

Let's not talk about benchmarks here. In Samsung's case they are probably manipulated anyway and what good is a fast processor, when the UI lags because of the terrible TouchWiz, which makes benchmarks almost meaningless. :p

A real computer user doesn't read forums. I am probably the only one who straddles this divide, as I've built a gaming rig before and realized it's a waste of money and most importantly time.

Real, normal computer users couldn't tell you MB from GB or Quad Core from i7. They just use it. Those are the users who matter, not us MacRumors dorks. You're a fool if you think you're a real or normal computer user. You're a power user, probably yes. A normal user, def no.

All benchmarks are meaningless. Most ARM professors of the same generation are similar in performance. The whole point for a bigger battery on the S5 is to power the screen. The one part that uses the most power. Let's see what happens when Apple starts using bigger and higher resolution screens.

You should look up the definition of 'real', 'normal'and 'average'. Otherwise you will confuse yourself and others.

I agree. That's why I have to laugh when I read postings of some guys here, claiming that after 'heavy' usage the battery consumption was around 10-ish%. The screen is a massive power drain.

I'm a bit worried with Ive's obsession with thinnes, combined with big bezels. If the mockups of the iPhone 6 depict roughly the real thing, then I'm afraid we shall see 'Wall huggers - Part 2' ad next year. Because the battery size will be sacrificed in order for the Katana-look.

The UI lags by like .01 millisecond if you compare it to stock Android which you can easily flash on the S5 anyway, oh wow

So you can flash your Samsung. You can also flush it down the toilet, since it's waterproof. :p

Really, all devices can be modified, jail broken, etc. So what is your point?

But my personal all time favorite: it took *minutes* for the Gallery App to open on the Note 3. While at the same the benchmarks were tempered. That shows, where the priorities of Samsung were/are. Priceless.

Note 3 review - Ars Technica

I'm sorry, i know I am opinionated. After a total of 3 Galaxy devices in our household me and my wife came to the conclusion that there are better Android Choices out there. Not that overhyped, over marketed Samsung crap.

Seen too many battery doors break and the batteries fall out.

More like 7.

no optical drive

Optical drives are slowly dying away. Even Sony stopped making them. With downloadable software, USB Flash disks hold much more data.

Gigabit LAN (without an adapter)

More people use laptops wireless by far then wired.

No Firewire

Firewire has already been replaced by thunderbolt. Many firewire devices are simply not made anymore and moved on to faster/different standards.

Yet every one continues to come out with features/hardware/software to compete directly with Apple with each new release.

But yet is doomed to become just another niche product. We had intel based tablets for over a decade. But they have never been that successful. Due to high price, bad battery life, not a good touch interface.

First of all you couldn't be farther off base. From my years of experience in the wireless industry, 9 out of 10 users do not care if their phone battery can be removed. It's just one more thing to mess with. For many people their smartphone is there in order to make their life easier. They don't want to mess with extra batteries, removing cases to change the battery etc. Removable batteries are not necessary at all. Working in a service center for a major wireless carrier for several years showed me that iPhones have far better components, and their batteries almost never fail. There was a time when I believed a removable battery was a good thing. It isn't, especially when you can charge an iPhone up from near dead in under an hour. My Nexus 5 took 4 hours. LG, Motorola and others have started building their batteries into their devices too but no one is calling them out.

You mentioned that it is 2014. All the more reason to not have a heavy, dated machine. Hardly anyone uses optical drives anymore or firewire or any of that that other stuff. For the FEW that need those things, there are adapters for that. You clearly haven't actually used a new macbook pro/air because if you had, you would realize that it is FAR superior to any other notebook Apple or anyone else has ever put out.

The retina display is phenomenal. Dismissing it because it isn't 4k is a bit silly, It's easily the best display on any notebook to date as far as color accuracy and clarity in viewing while still being able to read the text.

I have exactly 6 ports in my retina macbook pro not counting the headphone jack. It's plenty to do everything I need, and everything that is unnecessary for 95 percent of users has been taken away. The 5 percent like you and the others who complain about not having 25 ports for stuff that no one needs down the side of a 6 pound monster notebook are never going to be happy again. There isn't a single company who is going to cater to these features that are essentially old technology. You will see more and more companies getting rid of ethernet ports and optical drives for the sake of thinness and lightness. Apple has done their market research and knows what is most important to the majority of their consumers. They are leading the way as usual but since they've done it first, they are the greedy bastards.

THANK GOD Apple did not attempt something like a Surface Pro. That is a device that is good for several things and great at nothing. People who use notebooks need a notebook. People who use tablets need a tablet. Touchscreen laptops are a waste of time. It is completely unnatural to have to constantly reach up and tap the screen on a computer. Apple gets this. Their trackpads are second to none.

This will seem like I am an Apple fanatic when the truth of it is, I used to despise Apple. I was hardcore android and I have had most every major Android phone in the last 3 years until about 8 months ago. I tried the iPhone and have since had far superior battery life and a much more stable experience. It's a better made device both on software and hardware than any android phone to date.

Now that I have tried a Mac it is equally impressive. Apple gets it. They understand what users want better than any other company. So yes I guess I am an Apple fanatic but it is because I have used everything else both computer and smartphone wise and Apple makes the best overall products and it's not even close.

So, you don't see a difference in these words you wrote? Nothing that would bother everyday people?...

Motorola bashed the iPhone
AT&T bashed Verizon
Verizon bashed AT&T
Apple made fun of Windows

Samsung's trolling of Apple iFans

Hundreds of comments in this thread like yours, zero logic. And people think I'm a cold-hearted bastard.

Umm, dude I honestly don't care. I mean so what if Samsung is bashing Apple or the cult that follows Apple. I fail to see why you should get so defensive over this. Chill out. It's a simple commercial. Nothing more, nothing less. Apparently it's wrong to bash Apple but let Phil Schiller make sarcastic, unnecessary comments regarding android and/or Samsung, and it's the funniest, coolest thing ever.

False statement, I had a galaxy and now I have an iPhone and iPhone's battery last longer what galaxy dont say is that u have to put the phone in safe mode so the battery will last longer (of course)

It sounds like Samsung wants us to believe that battery life is the most important thing in a smartphone.

The Droid MAXX had amazing battery life:

48 hours - mixed use
24 hours - talk time
18 hours - heavy use
13 hours - video
7 hours - browsing test

That phone had the best battery life of any smartphone... without swapping batteries or power-saving tricks...

... and no one bought it

Maybe there are other things people look for in a smartphone?

I got rid of my iPhone for this reason. I hate carrying a charger. I want my phone to last all day unquestionably. Here I am with my Droid Maxx at the end of the day, wifi on, bluetooth on, GPS on, moderate to heavy use... 58% left. Will never go back to iPhone for that reason. Ironically good battery life is a major reason I bought my MacBook Pro.

I don't know what was the issue. Probably it being only on Verizon as well as $300 on-contract when it came out. The Android is as vanilla as it gets and it's quick. Only things I don't like are the 720p screen and the camera could be better. That's it. Every other detail is perfect, from button feel to speaker loudness. It baffles me why it wasn't a Galaxy-killer.

It well known that iOS users do far more. More apps, more browsing, more everything. With that in mind I find my iPhones are fine. Car charger, rMBP can charge, Hot plug in next room, work PC. Never a real drama. And its easy to change one yourself or get someone to do it. After 1000 full cycles its down to 80% thats the spec.

Say you charge every day, thats 3 years, and its down to 80%. Every 1.5 days thats 4.5 years. Long gone by then

I've tried a lot of phones and the best battery life I've gotten is with the Samsung S4 GPE with ART. I've added the Anker 5200 mAh battery which is still thinner and lighter than an iPhone with Mophie. I get almost 8 hours of screen time which is pretty amazing for any Android phone.

I think this is the best Android phone on the market right now. Faster than the S5. At least until the GPE version of that comes out.

Apple is GREEDY. They need to stop being greedmongers and start doing reasonable things.

The day Apple does something like that - they will spiral to their doom. They are a corporate entity with an unceasing duty to make more money for their stockholders. In their world - greed is not just good, it's godd*mn necessary.

Samsung is better then Apple in my Oppenion.

But as far i think Samsung is much better then Iphone as far the feature & Apps depend i have found a real interesting review in the below link.

Samsung today released a new ad for its Galaxy S5 smartphone, which mocks the iPhone for having both an unchangeable battery and a short battery life. The ad depicts forlorn iPhone users sitting along walls in an airport as they charge their iOS devices, while Galaxy S5 users eschew battery charging with Samsung's power saving mode and the Galaxy S5's replaceable battery.

YouTube: video
An iPhone user charging his battery looks up enviously at a Samsung user, asking "Are you changing your battery? Is that the new Samsung?" While another Samsung user turns on power saving mode to save battery. "Don't be a wall hugger," says the ad.

Unveiled in February, Samsung's 5.1-inch Galaxy S5 is its newest flagship device, with a fingerprint sensor, a water resistant casing, and a heart rate sensor. One of the device's most highly-touted features is an Ultra Power Saving Mode, which activates a black and white display with limited app access when the phone's battery is low.

In power saving mode, users only have access to basic phone functions, such as making and receiving calls, accessing email, and browsing the web. It limits cellular connectivity to 3G, turning off LTE, and it also disables WiFi and Bluetooth. According to Samsung, this provides an additional 24 hours of standby time with less than 10 percent of battery left.

Apple does not have a similar power saving feature on the iPhone, nor does it have a removable battery like the Galaxy S5, but users do have quick access to settings like WiFi and Bluetooth, along with options to disable battery draining features like background app usage and location services. iOS 8 also adds a function that lets users see which apps are draining the most battery.

Samsung often turns to iPhone bashing to promote its Galaxy line of smartphones, with its most well-known commercial series depicting iPhone owners waiting in long lines for new iPhones while enviously eyeing Samsung devices.
