When I had the 5S for a month earlier this year the inability to change the battery was a big deal for me. I even bought a morphie juice charger but it isn't comparable to simply swapping out the battery, because you have to wait for the phone to charge. I took the phone and charger on a weekend away and it was frustrating. I'd gone on the same weekend away a few months earlier with the S4 and a spare battery and I'd had none of these frustrations.

we're living in a "disposable technology" world from Apple.

Out iPhone, tablet, MBA/Pro/Retina cannot replace battery yourself..

But you can replace the SSD ? Seems kind of odd that Apple limits or dictates what you can/or can't replace, being after you purchase, its YOUR product... you have a right to replace it yourself which is why we have iFixit :)

(Those guys are good)

while non-user replaceable devices continue to appear, there is always going accessories, like the mophie case, to do stuff that users want, but Apple doesn't care..

Regardless, none of these beats just replacing the battery.

Go Samsung ..

What if your car started becoming "non-repairable/non replaceable parts" and you have to buy a new car when it breaks down ? allot of people wouldn't be happy, but they don't care when its only $899-$2599 for Mac laptop

Erm, if you consider the SSD replaceable, then in the same sense the battery is too. It's not like it's soldering in there. It just means, either way, you have to crack your device open.

I can't believe I'm about to defend these guys, but they are listening to their customers. Right or wrong they are making the smart move by asking what their customers want and giving it to them.:)

It well known that iOS users do far more. More apps, more browsing, more everything. With that in mind I find my iPhones are fine. Car charger, rMBP can charge, Hot plug in next room, work PC. Never a real drama. And its easy to change one yourself or get someone to do it. After 1000 full cycles its down to 80% thats the spec.

Say you charge every day, thats 3 years, and its down to 80%. Every 1.5 days thats 4.5 years. Long gone by then

Any link to surveys/statistics to back that up?

For what I do with my iPhone, the battery life is acceptable.

I'd love to swap over from one phone to the next at a whim, but other things come first. So unless Samsung gives me a new phone for nothing, the iPhone will stay. It has been faultless so I won't complain.

Common knowledge. Every time stats come out thats often stated
http://techland.time.com/2013/04/16/ios-vs-android/

Which platform gets used most on the Internet?

NetMarketShare publishes monthly stats on which browsers and operating systems are being used on the Net. Its report for March 2013 says that among mobile devices, iOS rules with 60.1 percent share. Android is way behind at 24.9 percent. Given that there are more Android devices out there, the data suggests that iOS users are disproportionately active online.

Replacable Battery would be a improvement

All iPhone users wish they could swap out the battery, but with the plethora of externals which can be used on ALL devices...it is a mute point for Samsung...

My 5S is on 28%. Usage Time 10 hours 8 minutes, Standby 2 Days 10 hours.

Although it states ios users browse the internet more, it states Android users download more apps.

Reading through, I still cant work out how you came to the conclusion that

Samsung "innovation" at its finest...well, we can't fix the battery, but we'll let you swap a new battery in and/or make your phone useless in the time being. Translation: yeah, we can't fix the problem either. In other news, we've introduced a band-aid and duct tape to make it just go away.

Call me when their battery (or any battery) lasts more than 12 hours with regular use.

The battery on my nexus 5 lasts a good 24 hrs with regular use. As I go to bed, there's usually 30-odd percent left.

And, to be fair, Samsung ARE solving the battery problem by allowing you to swap it.

All?? Don't make silly rash assumptions. The battery will outlive the upgrade path by a long way. My 5S as above has been on 2 days, 20 hours and 10 minutes, and 10 hours 10 minutes is Usage time, the rest is standby, battery is 27%
Brightness 50%, wifi always on, BT usually off. These numbers are a bit better than usual as I am often at home after surgery, so wifi is using less batter, but from memory its always around 9 hours usage and 3 days standby. That the same as using it for 3 hours continual daily, for three days. Its never turned off.

Thats not bad. The 6 at 4.7 and 5.5 will be better as a bigger battery gets more time as the bigger screen uses less than the bigger battery provides.

And as stated, its often mentioned. So, if iOS is one fourth the market share, but it is used 2.5 x more. Thats effectively a tenfold increase over the usage = market share of .25

More apps, thats interesting. Android apps are more buggy and most certainly more ad intrusive and lower quality. I'd expect that iOS app downloads would be one fourth Androids, based on market share. Download, bugger a crap app, delete and get another?

Android has 70% global share and 51% share of app downloads
iOS has 21% global share and 40% share of app downloads

Thus Apple users download more apps per phone

15 months old? So what? Has the demographic changed in that time? Most Android users stay on Android, same with iPhoners. Even variation sin market share are skewed by release dates, its relatively stable

Proof?

Nope. I read that. However, I know a few people who use Android and switched to iOS, one who had to as her hubby bought her one, she was p3ssed. But she soon saw the ads effect, the bug effect. The lack of polish. I know Androiders who hate Apple, but admit it lacks polish and the benefit f the vetting and approval of apps. They still prefer the open and mores featured Android. Not so much a criticism, its a matter that Apple vets apps heavily, they need to comply with design requirements and Apples restrictions. Android is far short of that due to their open system.

LOL, one stat I'd love to see is the number of Android users here!

Thought as much, it's clear you don't know.

well from Apple's stand-point its not supposed to be. (depending on the model)

Of course, if you go against Apple, then anything's, in theory is "replaceable", since you can DIY yourself and break it more ...like replacing the logic board yourself, and the display and call it "replaceable" when its clearly not... It's just doing-it-yourself against something that a company said.

Of course, in reality, that's not how it works.

FYI. my iPhone 5S lasts 4 days on continuous stand-by too :p just to rub it in. :)

Show us the facts then...oh wait you can't.

Well, while I wait for F1 to start which is about now, I've been reading your past posts, enough said, but hugely entertaining

I cannot comment on a 5S, but previous iPhones are easy to open, two teeny pentalobe screws, the battery is very easy to replace. removed two batteries after two friends dropped in water, removed other parts near the buttons, all good. A friend has replaced broken 3GS and 4 screens too, not difficult. I assume there are quite a few backyard fixit guys, as there are here in NZ

Let's not talk about benchmarks here. In Samsung's case they are probably manipulated anyway and what good is a fast processor, when the UI lags because of the terrible TouchWiz, which makes benchmarks almost meaningless. :p

Touchwiz has gotten a bad rap and deservedly so, but it's not as bad as you think on the S5. I have extensively used other launchers on my phone and what I have come to find out it's that they lag more than TW does.

I have tried to convince myself otherwise but it's true. TouchWiz is the smoothest experience I've seen on the S5 though I'd be glad to take other recommendations. Nova prime was my go-to launcher of choice for years but it doesn't seem as good TW on this particular phone. Also I've tried Google Now launcher, Inspire, and a couple others and nothing compares to stock so far.
