Yes, it was intentional. That is what I call the company now. "Samesung": able to produce the best Apple knockoffs for their customers. It's a joke of a company.

wasn't it steve himself who said "good artists copy, great artists steal"?

Edit: ok my bad so he quoted it, still makes the same point.

Incorrect. Samsung smart phones are more popular than iPhone as evidenced by the fact that Samsung sold more smart phones last quarter than Apple.

No wonder. You give most people interested in putting their hard-earned money down on a phone the option between a fairly new phone with the latest in specs (S II) and a range of phones, all of which are a year or more old (4/3GS), and of course they're going to go with the newer phone... plus, I'm willing to bet that many who took the plunge on a Samsung phone did so because it was their second option and because they weren't patient enough to wait for their first option to be released/updated. Hardly an indication of their popularity, in my opinion.

The samsung people sound like my sister who is an android fangirl who works at verizon.
"omgz the screen is so much bigger and it has 4G which is unavailable in most of the country!"

When i play with her phone, the screen feels so plasticky, my finger doesn't glide across it like it does on an iphone and it skips. The phone itself is made of plastic as well, my iphone is still more aesthetically pleasing without a case. But looks are just a small part of it, it still has android. Lately her phone has developed a nasty habit of hanging up her calls when it feels like it (not dropped calls, the phone software actually just ends them), and there is a bug in her built in alarm clock app that won't allow her to snooze anymore, even though it used to. I'll stick to my "tiny" screen and iOS 5 until next year. Thanks.

Not to mention, android can't airplay to my apple tv, which i use EVERY DAY, nor can it function as a remote control. No sale for me. It has a bigger screen, but at what cost? I'm not willing to sacrifice overall functionality for a couple of features that we'll see on the next iphone anyway.

its ALMOST impossible to win over customers who have just upgraded and are therefore ineligable to upgrade so they're not losing much by mocking them. that's what i meant.

Well, I don't think the general public is going to think this is only about 4S owners and not think of all iPhone owners when they see this. There are lots of iPhone 3GS owners out there looking to upgrade. Samsung doesn't seem to be trying to woo them. I'd think they'd want to.

Ummmmmm,,, not quite. Steve quoted what is believed to be a phrase uttered by Picasso.

As to the commercial - I thought it was funny. Couple cute ladies in there too ;)

But, it while it by itself wouldn't convince me to buy a Samsung phone, it may pique my interest. However, as a ~3 week iPhone 4S user, gotta say I am very amazed at what this phone can do, and am quite happy with it.

i think they have been getting 3gs and 4 owners over to the galaxy s2 judging by the android forums.

also the advert is telling those people who have yet to upgrade theres a "next generation" 4G phone already out they dont need to wait for iphone 5 or settle for 4s. Theyre also poking fun at people waiting in line for old tech which sumbliminally tells users who have yet to upgrade "dont be as dumb as them"

i dont think this ad will be lost on most people. samsung has a 4g & larger screen phone out now.

the people that are still using the 3gs most likely aren't the type of people they are making fun of and won't be offended. if they were the type of people samsung is making fun of they would already have lined up for their 4s as anyone who lined up for the 3gs would be out of contract by now.

the commercial is not directed at all iphone owners. i'm an iphone owner, i like to always have the latest release (though i find other ways of getting it and don't camp out in line) and i was not offended in the least by that commercial. i thought it was hilarious. i really don't think this commercial is pushing away any available potential customers...

The SGSII has a Gorilla Glass screen with an oleophobic coating to reduce smudges. It certainly isn't plastic. Anecdotally, I've experienced no tracking issues when using my SGS's touchscreen.

The phone itself is made of plastic as well, my iphone is still more aesthetically pleasing without a case.
Personal taste? Not everyone has the same.

But looks are just a small part of it, it still has android.
Which some will prefer (see personal taste comment above)

Lately her phone has developed a nasty habit of hanging up her calls when it feels like it (not dropped calls, the phone software actually just ends them), and there is a bug in her built in alarm clock app that won't allow her to snooze anymore, even though it used to.
Not experienced either issue with my SGSII but anything I say about this is purely anecdotal.

I'll stick to my "tiny" screen and iOS 5 until next year. Thanks.
You're more than welcome to do so. No one will hate you for it! ;)

Not to mention, android can't airplay to my apple tv, which i use EVERY DAY, nor can it function as a remote control.
Apple TV: Welcome to vendor lock-in. The SGSII can stream media via allshare & to DLNA compliant hardware. There are remote control applications for Android (even a Samsung TV one is available).

No sale for me. It has a bigger screen, but at what cost? I'm not willing to sacrifice overall functionality for a couple of features that we'll see on the next iphone anyway.
The SGSII is a very capable handset when you actually know what it can do. It may not be for you but others will have some great use out of it (myself included)

Lastly...

my sister who is an android fangirl...
It sounds like someone has a bee in their bonnet because somebody likes something different to you.

Well, I think it's a clever little pun and should stick. :D

Really?

I find that an interesting take...that you think "waiting in line" is the defining factor. To me, the ad seems to say "if you like Apple products you are clearly not right for our products."

I don't see "waiting in line" as having anything to do with it. That was just a circumstance they used as shorthand to explain who those people were without having to say it. They are clearly including people who buy Apple products online in that group. It's just that an outdoor line is easier to show in a short TV ad.

And to be clear, I ALSO think the ad is funny. I just also think it's saying "don't bother buying a Samsung if you like Apple products."

Wait! An Android phone maker advertisement that completely ignores highlighting the user experience? Now I've seen everything!

Plus, they really nailed it by stereotyping the people who wait in line at an iPhone launch (as evidenced by the picture below taken at the iPhone 4 launch):

Look at all those hipsters! :-/

totally don't see that at all. different interpretations :)

yes they're using the line scenario to indicate its apple but all the jokes were directed at those hardcore fans and not at all apple users (a lot of apple users make the same jokes). I don't see where you get that its saying if you like apple don't buy samsung...

I think that was the main point, to poke fun of the Mac fan culture - the main one is waiting in line amongst peers - and it was for the reason of spiking curiosity. 5 ppl in this thread have already mentioned "what does the phone really do". IF Samsung has a theme of these phone ads this could really attack Apple where it hurst the most ... in the mindset of their users.

mmmm. Scarlett Johansen ;)

I think I'll give the LG Nitro a shot, at least until iOS5.x and IP5 ... I can say that BlackBerry training and devices gave me a job, while iOS5 gave me a larger pay and career :)

About my mindset...
The next time I'll see some Samsung phone I'l think about a douchebag thinking he's uebercool because he has the newest plastic crap in his hands and wearing a trenchcoat. Oh yeah, I'll definitely buy a Samsung phone now...

...not that I would have before :D
But seriously, the only thing Samsung reminds me now about is people that make me sick.

Don't forget people! Just because most of you guys are tech savvy it don't mean the other 99.9% of iPhone users are. To be honest most the people I know with iPhone don't know the difference between ram and memory let alone the other boatload of features that are on these phones. See the majority of people are just isheep and buy the iPhone because it's the cool phone to have and be seen with. Yes the android phones are more feature filled, powerful, faster and have a nicer OS but they don't care about this because they have a iPhone. Perhaps this adve will show the isheep that it really is sad to follow. And nope I'm no android fanboy because I have a 4S but I ain't getting suckers into this Mac is better iPhone is better crap because none of it's true. Each has there good and bad points but one is much more over priced than it should be.

I think the best thing about this ad is that it's succeed in doing what all ads aim to do, have people talking. I've seen this add everywhere on the net with hundreds of comments following. It's already got 1 million views in one day on youtube. This would be a great Super Bowl ad. Give credit where it's due. Win Sauce.

No one finds it a bit ironic that Samsung is doing to Apple what Apple did to IBM in the 1984 commercial?

There were no product placement, no mention of features, or even how to use it.

Just showing that Apple iPhone users are now becoming "lemmings" just like IBM PC users were in 1984.

Brilliant!

It's hilarious. Coolness tends to lose it's cache when you can walk into a WalMart and buy it, right along with the soccer moms, bubbas, corporate suits and 10 year olds.

What was once cool and exclusive has become pedestrian.

They're just phones.

The Samsung devices offer faster speeds than the iPhone, more features on paper, and technically seem like all around better devices. I LOVE some of the reference and research features of Android and having used both operating systems extensively, I can honestly say, I find Android far more USEFUL.

Yet, I have an iPhone 4S and I just upgraded from an iPhone 4 I bought in June (AT&T is new to our area and allowed everyone here to upgrade at new contract price since they're new here). Why?

I'm sorry. I really am. This is not personal. But what you said above is essentially, "I had a phone. It was utilitarian. It was useful. It was efficient. The features were flawless. BUT, I went to iPhone because...

1. The camera is the best I've seen.

Really? Really? Really? A camera that you likely use once every blue moon (and if you use it more than that, you really need to be buying a REAL camera), and that was part of your decision to leave a perfectly functional phone?

2. Text messaging. Enough said. Apple knows how to get things like the software keyboard right.

People type text messages? I mean, I've been using Google Voice-to-Text feature since as far back as I can remember, using the keyboard to correct only, and really it doesn't even matter what device I use. In the rare instances I do use the keyboard, I haven't had much of an issue. If you have a 4S why aren't you using Siri for your texts at least?

3. Fashion. I won't lie, I choose iPhone as much for fashion as for functionality. Guess what? That's NOT a bad thing, unlike certain a certain carrier's ads make it sound. The iPhone is dang pretty. Have you seen a GS2? The screen's great. But the device itself? It looks really business-y. The only Android phones I would seriously consider competitive, possibly even better in this area are some of the Sony phones.

And this is quite possibly the most asinine reason to jump ship. "fashion"? Sort of like such epic failures as...

dgmn9.jpg

I swear, I never understand people who do this. The look of the phone does NOT matter and should NOT matter, and even if it did, Apple iPhones are the worst to consider for fashion since they all look the damn same. Want color coordination? GET A CASE.

Things I miss from Android:

Google Calendar integration, Google Sky Map, Google Talk (3rd party apps aren't NEARLY as good before you suggest it), homescreen widgets/customizability, Google Maps & Navigation.

Yeah, most of those things are Google services. But said Google services become a huge part of your life... and are genuinely far more useful than anything else.

In other words you acknowledge that Google's ecosystem of applications is more functional and would actually likely make you more efficient, but you're too worried about cameras and fashion to care. Do you understand why certain people call certain iPhone owners "sheep"? It's because you're not willing to get the phone that serves you best; you would rather just fall in line with the rest, tolerate the limitations of iOS so that it matches your skinny jeans.

Anyone reading this post, Samsung's video is pointing at this user directly.

I think the look of a phone matters just as much as the look of a car.

This is something you're going to use/have to look at everyday for a decent amount of time, depending on how frequently you update.

Why should looks not be brought into the equation at least a little bit?

I know my old candy bar "dumb phone" just repulsed me. It worked, but it repulsed me. Did I enjoy it? It was okay I guess, it made calls. If I had to chose between an iPhone that could only make calls and my dumb phone when it was new, I'd probably still choose the iPhone.

I know on these forums I'm not supposed to compare phones to cars, but I'm going to anyways because they have more in common than most like to acknowledge.

And if I can't compare it to a car, I'll compare it to a relationship, although perhaps that's a bit extreme. But what good is a relationship with a significant other if there's no physical connection? There's just as much need for a physical connection as there is for a mental/emotional connection.

If looks really didn't matter, we'd all be still using those giant bricky flip phones from the early 90's.

I

Yeah because EVERYONE wants to have to carry a camera along with them.

I use the camera on the phone all the time. My wife uses her camera on the phone all the time. Most people I know, even with Androids, use their camera all the time.

However, I do have a Nikon DSLR with several lenses, so I do have a real camera. I just don't want to lug that thing all around.

So yes, the camera matters...

Back to the topic. I thought the commercial was pretty damn funny.

Samsung is just hating on apple because they are jealous. While samsung may have outsold apple. Apple has brand loyalty samsung doesn't have that quite yet outside of korea.

Motorola also tried this as well with that abstract attempt to bash apple users with the Xoom commercial.

I applaud apple for never making commercials like this especially when they could of bashed on pc's and the users of pc's.
Just goes to show apple is a cut above.

You know that would probably be a good idea for them to do. They could get a geeky nerd type in a suit to pretend to be a "PC" and some hipster in jeans be a "MAC".

What is underhanded in this ad is the fact that the company as a whole is attacking a type of people. This isn't about features or benefits of either phone as much as putting down people who pick a certain phone. This is underhanded and because of this I will personally think twice before purchasing anything from a company that would put down the customers who purchase products from their competitors. Lure me to buy your products because of superior offerings, not because you think I'm dumb for the decisions I make. Attack your competitors, not potential customers.

Also for those of you comparing the Mac Vs. PC commercials you are missing the point of how they were different. In each commercial they would pick a specific feature or flaw of each product and emphasis it through imagery. It would be no different if they plopped down a Mac and a PC next to one another and had the commercial just show them typing the script on the screen. Showing the computers anthropomorphized as people gave it a personable touch that was easier to relate to. It would have been different if the person playing the Mac stood there, pointed at the PC, and said "people who buy you are stupid". The commercial is better then this.

To be honest the T-Mobile commercial where the guy with the man on his back that mimicked an iPhone with AT&T service more like the Mac VS PC commercials than this Samsung PR trash.
