Terrible Ad for a Giant Phone with a Pen

Wow, that is one terrible ad.

A Pen, Really in 2012?

That Phone is so big - no way.

Terrible

Okay will be honest here :
For me
Jailbroken iOS > Android > iOS . I possibly can't use stock iOS . Am talking about software and not hardware.
As a complete unit an iPhone would be better then any Samsung or htc device hands down. I trust apple and know their devices won't be of inferior quality.

Just bought a S2 yesterday even though I am kind of liking the display size ( prefer 4 inch then the 4.3 though)and freedom an user gets using it , It just feels better using an iPhone .

M not a fanboy of apple/android . Both are good devices depending on what user wants. If some day jailbreaking community declines then yeah I would use android till then it's iOS For me.i still don't get the apple and android bashing..

But then if u don't have an iPhone ,well, you don't have an iPhone .. ;)

i can't believe they paid to air this during the Superbowl.

Agreed; my wife and I were laughing at how unprofessional the commercial seemed - it was all over the place with no real focus on the product.

An unsuccessful commercial.

Who is Brian Urlacher? Is this the dog from Family guy?

What a great ad, and I'm sure if Apple had done it most of the comments on here would be ''Wow Apple have done it again with even more things never to use'', Get a life Apple fan boys! If you want to be a sheep and stand behind fences waiting in line to take your money then that's fine.. Just take a look at yourselves. Sad.. very sad.

I like Apple products and they have been some decent ideas, but recently? Mmmm think they are losing the plot. And before anyone says get off this site as I'm not bowing down to the great Apple god, I come on here to see what the rumours are... Yes its a rumours site not a religious one. I also go onto other rumour sites as I like to see whats coming in so I can start to camp out in a line up, buy lots of the new gear and then sell it at a profit as there are so many fanboys who just have to have the latest gear to impress their sad little friends. Good business eh? :) Bahhh

Samsung might actually really take over Nokia within the next few years as the top cell phone seller. Some folks in the U.S. don't realize how Samsung is becoming so popular here in ASIA. This continent has like 60% of the world's population.

Check GSMArena. The Samsung Galaxy Note is #2 behind the Galaxy S II in overall ratings. But by daily hits, the low-end model known as the Galaxy Y is #1. My cousin who owns an iPhone 3Gs but works for Samsung bought one of those phones in white last week. He wanted to try out Android and perhaps buy a phone for his wife who has a Samsung Corby which sucks. It is a solid phone for the budget conscious and the cheapest Android coming from a brand name like Sammy. The Galaxy Y(oung) only cost 6,500P in the Philippines which is like $150. That is about as low as you can get for an Android (Gingerbread) phone without it being second hand, about two years old, or coming from Huawei.

Samsung is covering both the low-end and premium-end. They have four of the top five highest-rated and most interested phones in GSMArena. Then you still have to check out their SMART WINDOW and flexible OLED technology. These South Koreans are kicking ass during the last 6-7 years when they were more like a generic brand prior to 2004. But it has been the last few years where they have really been hitting their stride.

Maybe depends on your use. Somehow I don't think artists are going to pick up the Note in droves, though there are good examples of art created on the iPad already.

If this Samsung Note has hundreds of levels of pressure sensitivity like my 1998 Wacom tablet, I would be surprised.

If it does have screen pressure, then I would be surprised if it had BOTH that AND the kind of capacitive grid underlying it that Apple has developed to get accuracy for MultiTouch computing.

IF it DOES have both, then I would think a compromise is being made somewhere.

IF it really IS so wonderful that it does everything amazingly well, then it means Apple is waiting to perfect another piece of the puzzle.

And, no, the screen doesn't have to be pressure sensitive: the pen could take care of that, by being a smart pen; or some other means could be developed and refined (such as some of the demos with iPad apps that show use of acceleration).

The Note, paired with its S Pen, has 256 levels of pressure sensitivity.* Yes, it also has a remarkably accurate capacitive panel that seems to be on par with my iPhone's.

The Samsung Galaxy Note's 5.3-inch screen responds to more than 250 levels of pressure.

Why would people be waiting in lines to get an iPhone 4S in February 2012 when it came out in October 2011?

Way to stay relevant Samsung.

Also if I wanted a stylus I'd just buy one. They have ones that work on all capacitive touch screens not just their magical behemoth. I choose not to use one because my finger is a much better pointing device.

You just refuse to read and understand, eh?

The styluses that 'work on all capacitive touch screens not just their magical behemoth' have fat tips and one level of sensitivity. Pretty much useless, because that's just your finger lopped off and a stick attached to it. If you'd care to do a bit of research you would figured out that the Note's S Pen has a fine tip which makes it much more useful for things like drawing, and pressure sensitivity so one can control the heaviness of a stroke.

"WTF:mad:, i cant find the stylus! now the NOTE is useless":p

next big problem............Coming soon............. to a Samsung customer service near u, do they have one?

Um, you do realize that you can use your finger with the screen like every other capacitive touchscreen, right?

*sigh*

See above bolded.

And some people might find it 'so big' (like you, evidently), while others find it just fine. It's a matter of personal preference.

Samsung's taunting of the iPhone and iPhone users is as silly as Wesley Welker mocking Ahmad Bradshaw for his "accidental" touchdown. The ad was a double eye roller for me.

There is a reason a million+ people anxiously pre-order or line up for iPhones and iPads and not Android devices. Are they sheep? Well, the ones in the ad were because they were mesmerized by a stylus. Your typical iPhone camper or pre-orderer would not be so impressed.

Samsung, the stylus dates back to the early 90s -- maybe before. It's hardly a bleeding edge concept, and largely unnecessary, so you would be better off to hire a decent R & D team instead of a silly copywriters and come up with real innovation. THEN maybe some of the iPhone users will think about standing in your line.

The hardware is immaterial. The iPhone is solid and many of the Android devices are better specced. But specs aren't all that determines who "the best" is. Its what's behind the phone that counts. The iTunes store, with its vast array of apps, music, movies and TV shows, the textbook initiative, iTunes U, no fragmentation, etc are what make the iPhone the winner (IMHO of course).

I a wondering about that. At first I thought he tried to stop, but was so surprised they let him through that the momentum made him fall into the endzone. But in replays, it seems like he could have fallen short if he wanted to, like he was trying to decide at the moment - do the right but difficult thing and go down, run the clock and kick the FG to win or be the guy who scored the Super Bowl winning touchdown. It seems like he chose the latter.

I don't hate this ad because it makes fun of Apple users, I hate it because it is stupid. Just like every super bowl commercial.

Galaxy note is the best mobile device yet made. All you stupid iFan boys stay your none LTE 3.5" forever. The game is over at least now, go check at a store in your hand.

I will check it out "in my hand", when I've got a hand big enough to hold the thing comfortably.

You NEED the stylus (which will invariably be lost) as with a single hand you can probably cover less than half of the screen. Usability FAIL!

Also, having apps specifically made for a stylus input will fail even harder, as the hit zones will be smaller, making the apps unusable on anything without a stylus. More frangmentation for Android, just what it needs...not!!

I'm trying to think of a shared television event (like the Superbowl) that would be suitable for big budget primetime advertising in the UK.

All I can think of is the Doctor Who Christmas Special or the Eastenders Christmas Special (sadly both on advert-free BBC). I'm guessing Britain's Got Talent or the X-factor would be better for advertising Blackberries? (Blackberrys?)

I actually had to hide behind my hands for parts of that commercial.

Don't Samsung realise that this ad will actually serve to harm their image in the long run? The Galaxy Note is a long way from a mainstream device like the iPhone. If a potential iPhone customer saw this ad and ended up buying a Note I sincerely doubt they'd ever buy a phone from Samsung again.

The mise-en-scene is just terrible, too. Behind the Apple 'fans' you've got a window full of app icons, yet the Samsung advert does nothing to then destroy the notion that Apple is where all the apps are. The very fact that the ad shows an Apple store is a complete fail - the Samsung converts, having no such store to go to, receive their new Notes directly from... thin air.

My least favourite part is probably people taking pictures and then scribbling all over them with that stylus. Yes, because that's what we all do when we take a picture, we instinctively start scribbling all over it.

Tip for Samsung: You're never going to win by playing second fiddle to Apple. To play a variation on a theme of the late Steve Jobs, for Samsung to win Apple doesn't have to lose. Focus on creating your own great products and then find a way to communicate them to your market.

p.s. just watched the advert. Made the previous "is your phone 4G?" ad look, well, a bit better in comparison.

The phone may be fine, but the advert had next to nothing to do with it. Were they partying because of the implication that they were freed from queueing from what must be a more popular phone?

The concensus from this thread is that pressure-sensitive styluses are a feature that about 5% of geeks want. I don't see any reason to deny them their pressure-sensitive styluses (styli?) but it's an odd marketing point, especially to make during a mainstream broadcast, when the vast majority don't give two damns about drawing a circle round a map, or doing anything that requires more than one gradation of pressure.

I did actually consider a GSII when the 4S was taking long to get restocked by Orange. But I knew I'd be annoyed with it, and that anything that was annoying about the iphone (mostly the battery) was bound to be identical on the samsung model, I'd just be locked out of my 6 billion apps...

Samsung should concentrate advertising on capturing the users before they buy from Apple. The flaw with this advert is that it continues to advertise Apple as well.

My opinion is that an Apple user who buys Samsung will only ever buy Samsung once.

My example is me: a D8000 SmartTV owner. A nice screen but has unresponsive, inconsistent controls, unfriendliness verging on abusive and many of the built in apps just don't work.

I don't like Samsung products period but I am glad someone finally took a shot at people who are waiting in the line to spend their money! Falling for the oldest trick in the game "Sorry you can't get it." "But I HAVE TO GET IN!!!!" Once you get in you get more pumped up becaue you actually got in instead whats going on inside. Same thing with iPhone/iPad sleepovers.

As long as all of these Android devices come skinned by the OEM, carrier dependent for software updates, and loaded with crap ware I'll stick with the iPhone.
