I'm trying to think of a shared television event (like the Superbowl) that would be suitable for big budget primetime advertising in the UK.

All I can think of is the Doctor Who Christmas Special or the Eastenders Christmas Special (sadly both on advert-free BBC). I'm guessing Britain's Got Talent or the X-factor would be better for advertising Blackberries? (Blackberrys?)

I guess the Champions League, Soccer World Cup, and Rugby World Cup finals would be of comparable importance, although they don't have as many commercial breaks as the Superbowl. And yeah X-factor :p

The stylus is for more accurate note taking and sketching, not for navigating the phone. That Steve Jobs quote doesn't really apply lol

Woah! The Darkness! Skateboard and BMX stunts!! A massive parade and a person shoot from a cannon!!

That is so amazing!! ...I forgot what the ad was about though...

Just curious...how are they nasty? I just ordered one. Figured I'd give it a whirl to see if I like it better than my IP4. I love my iPhone, but would really like something bigger.

I experience serious lag in opening basic apps like sms on my friend's one, but I haven't bother much fiddling with it to be honest. It could have been one time occasion.

I actually want a Samsung Galaxy Note. Those things are cool! I always thought that styluses are more sophisticated than using your hands.

Just ordered one. For me the stylus is a non issue. The screen size is what I'm after.

I'll post back after a few days with it. I love my IP4, so the bar is set very high...

I figure I have 30 days to decide whether to send it back, or Ebay my IP4.

Exactly.. If more people here knew what they were talking about, they wouldn't just spout off and make senseless statementd.

I love my Apple products but I am always willing to consider something different. Remember when Apple was the something different?

We'll see how it goes.

That's because it is one. You know, you can use the Note without a stylus, but as you probably already have figured out by now, drawing with your fingers sucks. And that's what the stylus is there for: Drawing and handwriting.

It does. And the screen size makes the Note more useful than iPhones with their nano-screens.

The funniest part of ad was how big the phone looks when a woman is holding it. Is that sub-tablet or a phone?

Oh my, this ad actually shows that Apple iPhone is superior. How ridiculous this ad is.

The only good thing about this ad is Miranda Kerr, and she has an iphone.

Well, exactly the point, well made, sir!. Apple vs Samsung issues aside, I'm always very critical of ads that just don't do what you would suspect is intended for it to do. In this case, I assume the purpose of the ad is to persuade me to buy a Samsung phone. But where in the ad does it suggest there's something better about the Samsung vs the Apple? It's a jolly advert but it has no message apart from; "let's tek the piss out of Apple customers; isn't this Samsung phone large (implying the technology used in it is dated); and that a stylus used to draw a circle is cool.???
The problem from a marketing/sales front is that they are offending the very people they are trying to convert. It would be like Ford taking the mick out of current, happy Vauxhall drivers because they always wear a flat cap, (actually there are a few who don't, but I'm just using that as an example you see?). Is the Vauxhall driver going to be motivated to buy a product from a firm who has just called them stupid/unfashionable/a joke to society? I think not.
So, as many people on here have already said, Samsung has shown how desperate and immature they are as a company because they are taking the fight between them and Apple to the customers. Punching their chests in front of the crowd, and losing the war in the process.
I'd sack their advertising department rather swiftly, what!

So basically if you lose your stylus your phone becomes useless since you can't do anything on it?

Nice one Samsung

So, seriously, the stylus is the "something different" people are looking for ? Try "something deprecated" instead.

Amen!

Any ad agency just MUST know that it is never a good selling point to put down the competition. That goes for any industry.
Because that means basically you have nothing else to promote that is an advantage over the competitors.
Play up your strength for about say 80% of a commercial and use the other 20% for a subtle humorous side swipe, if you are really short on ideas.

And STYLUS?
Really.gif

Really, there are far more important things in life than an advert.

Really? Thanks, Sherlock. Of course the people on these boards know that, but this is a discussion of Apple and related products. So why dont you stop wasting people's time posting on a message board and go participate in things that are far more important....

I think it's important to separate two things here. First - the ad. I agree - as a sales tool, it's not very effective. And that's where the competition fails usually. They don't provide use cases and what the experience is using the device. They "glimpsed" a few times with the video chatting and the guy writing on a picture just taken. But overall - you leave the commercial not really knowing much about the product and how it differs from even the Galaxy IIS (other than the stylus).

But that being said - just because the commercial didn't resonate doesn't mean the product isn't worthwhile, exciting, interesting, of use, etc. Dismiss it all you want, but there are a lot of "pros" in its favor vs a tablet or a phone. Perhaps niche - but again - plenty of reasons it could be a great device for some/many.

Sucky ad doesn't mean sucky product.

My .02.

You should look at the note. It is something that combines a tablet and a phone.

One of the biggest short comings of tablets right now is the lack of being able to use a stylus. For many things I would love to have one. Big time for taking notes or writing things down. In those things a stylus is just by far better. For basic navigation yeah the finger is great.

Not sure why so many people are disagreeing with you. This is a fact that can't really be disputed. I have an iPhone but still keep my Windows Mobile 6 device around for just this reason. While touch is certainly faster and more intuitive, there are apps out there that are better with a stylus, period. (As an example, I have WM6 app that allows you to look up Japanese words by drawing them; can't do that on an iPhone).

The only reason we line up for Apple is because they have consistantly proved to us that they can provide us with the best. When there is a probelm they fix it. They filter out scam apps that run rampant on Android and give us only the best, something Apple has proved time and time again that they are. Samsung has done nothing for us, they provide parts for the iPad but have not shown they can deliver like Apple. As for the stylus, Samsung is a good company and should know not to do that but they did.

I read a comment that said its hard to write with your finger, well first off you wont find an app that lets you write your own notes and if you do it probably wont work very well.

Either way Apple has a sixth sense and knows what the customers want and most of the time if it can it will give it to them.

<3 :apple:

This speaks to their large customer base and folks not on the Apple bandwagon for a variety of specific reasons and folks who are truly ambilavent. That is a large market.

The stylus is simply a clear differentiator. They demonstrated no compelling need or use.

Since they are pushing access to media streaming and 4G, the main point is first mover advantage to 4G. By the time Apple gets there the LTE networks will already be busy with other brands of devices with few apps and sold as a TV in your hand.

Apple should encourage Blackberry to put an app on iPhone that, yes, allows access to their proprietary network or co-locates it on Apple Servers with typical colo contracts.

There is a compelling need in this country to be able to not have BOTH an iPhone device and a Blackberry device.

Samsung mocked Apple without naming them. GM criticized Ford WITH naming them. Government Motors, due to a socialist President, criticizes privately owned Ford. News at 11.

Lemmings?

This should do for Samsung what the Lemmings ad did for Apple. Hey Samsung not everyone that bought and iPhone is a wool cap, expensive coffee drinking hipster that will camp out for a new model.

This is something different? Looks like a clone of the iPhone to me.
