A better tactic would have been to just show how 'amazing' it is and not have a guy doing jumps on a BMX. Seriously, do they think that sales would pick up after that?

Whoosh. It's a Super Bowl ad. Did you see ANY of the other commercials?

You belie your case here. Correct, styluses are nothing new, which is why people are laughing AT the Samsung ad and phone. Samsung is acting like the wheel is a new concept.

Ok. Yes. It's true. But Apple touts things every keynote that are nothing new. Go ahead and argue that they've "made them better" - but many times that's subjective. I still remember watching Steve introduce copy/paste as if it was something that had never been thought of before... and laughing hysterically.

Samsung's taunting of the iPhone and iPhone users is as silly as Wesley Welker mocking Ahmad Bradshaw for his "accidental" touchdown. The ad was a double eye roller for me.

There is a reason a million+ people anxiously pre-order or line up for iPhones and iPads and not Android devices. Are they sheep? Well, the ones in the ad were because they were mesmerized by a stylus. Your typical iPhone camper or pre-orderer would not be so impressed.

Samsung, the stylus dates back to the early 90s -- maybe before. It's hardly a bleeding edge concept, and largely unnecessary, so you would be better off to hire a decent R & D team instead of a silly copywriters and come up with real innovation. THEN maybe some of the iPhone users will think about standing in your line.

I will check it out "in my hand", when I've got a hand big enough to hold the thing comfortably.

You NEED the stylus (which will invariably be lost) as with a single hand you can probably cover less than half of the screen. Usability FAIL!

Also, having apps specifically made for a stylus input will fail even harder, as the hit zones will be smaller, making the apps unusable on anything without a stylus. More frangmentation for Android, just what it needs...not!!

What happens when the stylus is lost? Oh and was that and ad for a phone, I think it was; not sure.

So basically if you lose your stylus your phone becomes useless since you can't do anything on it?

Nice one Samsung

So, seriously, the stylus is the "something different" people are looking for ? Try "something deprecated" instead.

Amen!

Any ad agency just MUST know that it is never a good selling point to put down the competition. That goes for any industry.
Because that means basically you have nothing else to promote that is an advantage over the competitors.
Play up your strength for about say 80% of a commercial and use the other 20% for a subtle humorous side swipe, if you are really short on ideas.

And STYLUS?

You know you can buy a stylus?

I use a stylus (pen) with my ipad2 at work every day...not sure what you point is...

Wow. Some of you just aren't very smart, or are just unwilling to read.

The stylus used on the Note is pressure sensitive and has a fine tip. Thus it works better for drawing or writing. It is not one of those hideous fat tipped non-pressure-sensitive pens that are basically the size of your finger, rendering it completely pointless.

You are about as likely to lose it as the case on your phone, given how there's a slot on the device to hold it when not in use.

No, you do not NEED to use it. You can still use your finger

I love my Apple products but I am always willing to consider something different. Remember when Apple was the something different?

We'll see how it goes.

This is something different? Looks like a clone of the iPhone to me.[/QUOTE]

Really? The screen on this is larger than the entire iPhone. Oh, and it looks nothing like an iPhone. Yet you tell me it looks like a clone? You just can't please some people.

As long as all of these Android devices come skinned by the OEM, carrier dependent for software updates, and loaded with crap ware I'll stick with the iPhone.

So do you have a Nexus One, Nexus S or Galaxy Nexus? ;)

Well, exactly the point, well made, sir!. Apple vs Samsung issues aside, I'm always very critical of ads that just don't do what you would suspect is intended for it to do. In this case, I assume the purpose of the ad is to persuade me to buy a Samsung phone. But where in the ad does it suggest there's something better about the Samsung vs the Apple? It's a jolly advert but it has no message apart from; "let's tek the piss out of Apple customers; isn't this Samsung phone large (implying the technology used in it is dated); and that a stylus used to draw a circle is cool.???

Curious- since when did larger = dated? It's as slim as a Galaxy S II, the only part large about it is the screen (and as a result, the housing). I wouldn't say an iPad or 27" iMac is implied to be dated as it's large...?

Apples selling point: our products do this

Samsungs selling point: you don't have to wait in lines to get them -_-

Also, as far as the article goes I can't believe that *****

Well....That was probably the intent. I love the iPhone, so why wouldn't I love something that resembled it but was big enough to use without having to wear my reading glasses?

It all comes down to Android. If I don't like it, the phone goes back.

My least favourite part is probably people taking pictures and then scribbling all over them with that stylus. Yes, because that's what we all do when we take a picture, we instinctively start scribbling all over it.

Shhhh... don't say anything!!!! You may start a NEW FAD!

I haven't actually seen the ad in question. Nor do I have a strong opinion about the product. I am not looking for an alternative to iOS or Apple myself as I have never been less than pleased with anything I've bought from the company.

I am however convinced a lot of people are misjudging what Samsung might aim at with this line of "anti Apple" ads. The more off a fanboy you are, the more likely you are to be offended by Samsung's output here. Also. The more UNlikely you are to ever buy one of Samsung's phones or tablets.

I believe what Samsung are simply trying to achieve is to position themselves as THE alternative to Apple. At the moment that would be a great position to be in. They don't need to "out-cool" Apple, they just want to be seen as the obvious other place to go. This series of ads combined with press about litigation between the two companies should help hammer this message home.

Forget fanboism for a moment and ask, what the hell did Samsung bring to the game in that commercial? Nothing.
Apple haters call us Apple fanboys sheep or some variation, but guess what. All these companies want us to be their sheep.
Sammy did nothing to interest me in that galaxy note.
Sammy is just another huge, tech dumper. They have so much crap on the market it ain't even funny.
Nokia, just a few year ago, had like 160 different cell phones. I remember going to their website back in 2005 and being blown away at all the sh** they had from mediocre phones to full blown smart phones. Then iPhone came out. iPhone is everything ALL of those Nokia phones were but rolled up into one phone.
Samsung is the same way. And when that Apple tv come out , Sammy is going to sh** bricks.

If Apple was as low as Samsung - they could come up with adding showing people dropping Android phones in Garbage can while going into Apple store.

I don't understand how people believe this stuff - it total misinformation. To be honest I laugh when I see one those big ones - you can't put it in your pocket. I love the size of iPhone - it is perfect.

Just going to point out FaceTime rip off of other products. Android already had video chatting before facetime. Just figure I would point that out to you.

Are you serious right now? The first Android phone with a front facing camera was released in late 2010!!!! WAY LATER THAN THE IPHONE 4!!!!

Unless of course you meant the first 3G videophone in which case it would be a Nokia from late 2003.

Maybe people don't have to wait in line for Android because they keep selling a different variant every month or so and no great rush to get the latest. If a product sells good - you have to stand in line for it. This happens a lot with game consoles.

You do remember the “I’m a PC, I’m a Mac” commercials don’t you? Similar premise. Maybe a little more effective than the Samsung commercial.

I love apple products, but Steve was wrong about the Stylus. They're essential for writing. Fingers are good for pointing, not for precision.

So, copying the stylus used 15 years ago on the Apple Newton is supposed to show how advanced they are and sell new products?
