Well, it did work for Apple pretty well with the Apple vs. PC campaign =)

Kudos to Samsung for creating a somewhat cool commercial. However, they'll learn that you can't sell an un-needed product. That phone is just too big. I like how back in the 80's we had those big phones (Zack Morris style). Then we went to tiny phones (nokia candy bar phones, RAZRs). Now it's like Samsung thinks we need to go back bigger - no thanks.

What a waste of marketing efforts on a product. But from a branding point, I think Samsung is making good headway on their perception versus Apple.

Wow. Some of you just aren't very smart, or are just unwilling to read.

The stylus used on the Note is pressure sensitive and has a fine tip. Thus it works better for drawing or writing. It is not one of those hideous fat tipped non-pressure-sensitive pens that are basically the size of your finger, rendering it completely pointless.

You are about as likely to lose it as the case on your phone, given how there's a slot on the device to hold it when not in use.

No, you do not NEED to use it. You can still use your finger

Guy, if you are going to lob insulting ad hominem attacks at people then you might want to do your own research first to ensure facts are on your side. There exist pressure sensitive drawing apps for the iPhone and iPad that are compatible with any number of generic styluses, and there is also a 3rd party pressure sensitive stylus pen, the Jot, that will be released this quarter.

And as for there not being a slot for a stylus/pen on the iPhone --- who cares. It's a niche feature. Steve Jobs spoke to that when the first iPhone was announced, and at a time when the stylus was the main input method. It doesn't look like eliminating it hurt sales, and the fact other phone makers followed suit says a lot about that too. It's why people are eye rolling at the ad. This is not a new killer feature. Sorry.

No. Apple made fun of a bad product, not the people who used the bad product.

orly, maybe you did not watch the ads, but Apple users were portrayed as cool and funky.... while Windows users... well sad really! They were taking the piss out of PC users... come on!

Just going to point out FaceTime rip off of other products. Android already had video chatting before facetime. Just figure I would point that out to you.

LOL I was going to say the same thing. Skype has been out a lot longer than facetime. You got voted down by a lot of fanboys. I'm sure I will also. ;)

Honest really?
An S2 feels better? you are kidding right, it feels cheap compared to an iPhone even my diehard Android owning friends say it feels cheaper.
You obviously don't have an iPhone..

I have an iphone and now a galaxy nexus. I have held my friend's S2. None of them feels cheap.

It's all just your own perception which apple is good at pleasing. It's meaningless. Especially since most of us end up encasing that fragile back on the 4 or 4/S in a case, usually plastic. End result is the iphone feels exactly the same in the hand but heavier.

Just because something feels one way doesn't make it better. That would be just like those car modders who stick on a loud muffler and claim gains by feel. Until I see people actually test both phones to destruction side by side I wouldn't say one is better than the other.

I think the ad is pretty funny. The guy being overwhelmed by the "pen" is a little goofy, but I think it's a great jab at the dirt merchants who stand in line for phones.

Face Time was on the iPhone before Skype. Skype is more PC based so you point is more of a "cows" opinion.

To me the stylus is irrelevant. I don't plan on using it unless I find that there is some real reason to do so.

If Apple came out with a stylus for the new iPhone 5 or iPad 3, and showed how it was useful in certain apps, people would jump on board.

Yes it was a "strange" commercial, but the purpose of getting people to notice a new product was successful in my opinion.

It just seems like so many on this forum would bash any product made by anyone other than Apple, even if it was a great product.

Why is that?

I'm typing this on my Imac27, and I have an Ipad2 and an IP4 as well as a Macbook Pro 13 and an iPod Nano. My kids all have iPod Touch's and love them, but I still wouldn't mind having a larger phone to use.

I'm certain that Apple would never sell a phone this large because it may cut into their iPad sales. Sammy doesn't have to worry about that issue because their tablets are not selling anyway.

I think it is clever for Sammy to try to create a new category of devices to fill a gap in between the smart phone and the tablet. I guess only time will tell. All the tech reviews on the product are very favorable so far, and I think it will catch on. I'll post my review after actually using the product.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for anything positive I have to say. That'll be no surprise.

Nope. There was a super bowl commercial for the Droid Razr. However, the next big thing is the Droid Razr Max, which will be surpassed by the Note soon enough.
Again... you're confusing an OS with a device.
Android is not a phone, it's an OS. ;)

The only difference between the RAZR and the RAZR Maxx is the battery.
Both are on the market right now.
Also, neither of those products will be sold by any other carrier than Verizon and Moto has no plans to make a GSM version of either them, so that pretty much killed it.

The Note is a niche product. I get it, it's a hybrid phone/tablet.
That alone will limit its audience.
The one thing everyone seems to over look is that Apple offers a one size fits all approach. Ok they offer different storage capacity... yawn.

Companies that make Android based products offer consumers a choice of features. Something that may be ridiculous to some may be just what another is looking for in a phone.
Choice is good.
Put away the illogical nonsense that the iPhone is the only phone or that Apple is the only innovative company in the world.
It's pure BS and anyone who says otherwise is firmly stuck in RDF land.

We deserve to be mocked a bit...and I included myself...

Whether you get offend or insulted is up to you...

It is rather silly how consumed and obsessed we are with our cell phones or anything Apple...there are far worse things than being silly...

And yes, if you just read the above on MacRumors.com, you are consumed and obsessed....

More to the point, Samsung is attempting, and appears to be succeeding at separating itself from the rest of the Android herd.

It's Apple then Samsung for smartphone profits (there aren't much profits in any other category) leaving crumbs for the others, including Nokia. I believe that it is only a matter of time before Samsung creates its own ecosystem so that it can keep more of the advertising dollars that Google currently receives, not unlike Amazon's Android fork.

Oh my God! The new Note has a pen? I'm definitely switching!

And all this time we thought our index finger was the perfect stylus. Samsung, thank you for showing us the light.

I found it interesting that, given its size, you only see it being used for circling the map, taking a bunch of pictures and video and then the autograph by Ulacher. No one ever held that big thing up to their ear and used it as a phone. To me, that is one of the negatives to the large screen smartphones is putting that larger piece of equipment next to my head to use as a phone.

Boring

BORING It's not that this particular commercial is poking fun. I don't care about that. It's the fact that mostly all commercials turned out to be stupid. I miss the 80s, 90s where commercials where a piece of art.

SAMSUNG just follows. Not innovative and this commercial ain't showing me benefits of what the phone can do. Just a bunch of jumping people dancing awful to music.

Really, that's the best you can come up with. All these billions and that's what's your big idea?

Wow

Still Wrong

One of the biggest short comings of tablets right now is the lack of being able to use a stylus. For many things I would love to have one. Big time for taking notes or writing things down. In those things a stylus is just by far better. For basic navigation yeah the finger is great.

You need a stylus if the tablet is too small. Jobs was right in that the tablet had to be a certain size also (not too small). Requiring a stylus would be the biggest shortcoming.

And this is where you fail in our observation of the Note.
The stylus is not required to use the phone.
This is a hybrid device that allows for more than one method of input.
The gospel of Steve is not always right. He's been wrong on more than one occasion. ;)

Job's opinion didn't equal fact.

There are plenty of extremely good reasons why Smaller tablets are good. 7" tablets have a place and are very beneficial devices.

He was also wrong with the Stylus for certain cases. I'm not saying everyone needs one, But there are professions and certain situations where a Tablet with a 256 level of precision fine point stylus outweighs using my fat fingers.

I think Apple could actually hit a very huge market if they were somehow able to incorporate such an addon to the iPad. One of the biggest "shortcomings" to the ipad and most tablets is that its ability to do content creation is very limited.

How many professionals would give their left scrotal member to be able to use their Ipad2 with a stylus, like it were a WACOM tablet? with all the levels of precision.

Steve Job's had a fantastic ability to turn shortcomings of technology, or apple's advances, and tell you that you don't need them. There was no sway with Him. if Apple can't get it to work, then you don't need that feature. There was no wiggle room.

They made fun of the product, not the user of it...
