Yes, it has handwriting input for kanji, but that involves using the Chinese keyboard. One would have to constantly switch between the romaji/10key input and the handwriting method to input kanji, hiragana and kana. Not exactly efficient.

No, you're right but it's not really a standard input method, either.

Yap, why try to get informed before writing nonsense

I thought these forums were for expressing your views.

The whole point of Apple's touch interface is so you don't need a pen (according to the Bio, Jobs hated the pen interface); I merely pointed out that the pen interface has been around for a long time, not exactly cutting edge, as it's being portrayed in the video.

Nice to see you took the time and effort to quote me and reply.

Have a nice day.

The stylus is a pressure sensitive wacom stylus and the screen actually works with other wacom styli. But the note-taking/sketching app that comes with Touch-wiz is the only app that supports it. So, it's basically useless.

I trust Autodesk for producing good sketch apps, but NOT Samsung. ha.

The S-Pen works fine in the interface and it also works with Autodesk SketchBook Mobile.

...and had you taken the time and effort to read about the pen on the Note then you would have figured out that it is indeed cutting edge because it's one of the first mainstream applications of a pressure sensitive Wacom-esque stylus, and is not just another stylus poking a resistive touchscreen that doesn't work with fingers.

Sorry, I don't understand- what do you mean?

Doesn't change the fact that you need to carry the stylus with you, does it?

This Is Funny

Really good funny advert. BUT the product is flawed because it has a PEN!!! when will companies get it we dont need styluses.....

Really? Over 800 posts in this thread and you think this is new info? Not only that - it's been argued already in exhaustion. Are you trying to be cute or clever? If so - massive fail.

If you're being genuine - you clearly missed the point of the advantages of this KIND of stylus on this KIND of device.

Who is this "we" you refer to. You and Steve?

Prepare to get roasted......

See! It's a 'new' pen/stylus, which you apparently don't need to carry with you to use; plus you didn't read the previous 35 pages of posts in detail, like samcraig and Oletros.....

Ha! Ha! I love it! One of my first posts on this topic was based on my misunderstandings that the Samsung Note NEEDED a stylus. I formed that impression based on watching Samsung's commercial. It was only after the Samsung fanboys came here and "educated" me that the device can work without the stylus as well.

After reading some of the comments it looks like there was a bunch of people who made the same conclusion that I did about the stylus.

Wow! talk about an advertising FAIL on Samsung's part!

Advertising 101: if after delivering your message in an advertisement, the consumer is confused or doesn't understand then it is YOUR fault, not the consumer!

We shouldn't need the technogeeks to crawl out of the woodwork to clear things up for the rest of us, I'm going to go back to my original opinion on the commercial: this device won't deliver.

You lost all credibility after calling me a Samsung fanboy.

Man 1: What is that?
Man 2: Here, it's the new Samsung galaxy note
Man 1: It has a pen?
Me: You just blew it. You have a stylus on your phone, it sucks.

Funny how sensitive the Apple fanboys are to the suggestion they are a bunch of sheep. They are.

Whats wrong with having the option to use it? If you don't want to use it, dont use it!

Try using a drawing program with your finger. Let us know how that works out.

The note is not for me, personally. But the stylus would also be great for PDF markups...

It's like making fun of 4g battery life. Sure its bad, but when I don't need it i turn it off and get great battery life. When i do need it i download crazy fast. But at least I have the option...

For myself and probably many others, the appeal of the Note is probably the large screen, not the stylus. I could care less about the stylus, unless of course developers make new apps that call for it. If I receive my Note and it sucks, it goes back, but I haven't seen a reviews by objective tech reviewers who say anything but how nice the Galaxy note is.
It's a shame so many here can't be a bit more objective.

We all have a choice. Not all of us are blind followers. I love my iPhone, but I still am open to new products. Just look at all the Blackberry users who swore they would never use anything else. Apple came along and changed all that. Is it possible that eventually Apple won't be the crowd favorite? WHo knows. Apple can spend years making silly commercials poking fun at Windows, and 1 commercial by Sammy stir all this up?

All I gotta say is that we should be grateful that companies keep trying to outdo each other with exciting new features. If it weren't for competition, the IP4 may not even be what it is today right? Apple , like any company wants to stay at the head of the pack, and to do so they need to innovate.

I agree...the problem is when the 4S was announced there wasn't much objectivity going around. And the 4S had a new processor, a new OS, a new camera, and Siri.

Here we have a phone with a larger screen and a stylus and people are acting like it's something amazing. I guess android fans are impressed by "marginal" upgrades too...

Slot the thing back into its storage hole (or better yet, if you don't want to carry around the extra ~5g, put it in the box) and use your finger.

What's your next argument?

Not again.

I suggest reading the last few pages of this thread.

It looks different to any other phone, has a much larger capacitive SAMOLED screen with a 720p screen resolution that's also capable of 256 levels of pressure sensitivity when used in conjunction with the S-Pen, has a faster processor, more RAM, USB host support, LTE/HSPA+ support (depending on market) and yet it's still a 'marginal' upgrade (actually, this is an 'upgrade'? where's the Galaxy Note 0.5 which I haven't heard of?)

Nothing to say to my previous post so making new things up now. Smooth.

In the end, like always, people will vote with their wallets and get what they believe is the right choice for them.

In the meanwhile, folks on forums all over the world will face off and argue their views as though it has any real meaning/impact.

Generally, I come here to see if I can pick up some helpful tips/tricks for my MBP or iMac; occasionally, it amuses me to dial into one of these conversations to see how wound up people can get over trivial stuff.

I mean, really, 35 pages of posts about Samsung's somewhat amusing advertising slot? Not the cure for cancer, folks.

BTW, I really couldn't give a rat's a$$ whether or not it has a pen/stylus. My wife and son both have the Phone 4 (and are very happy with them) and my daughter wants an iPhone 4S when she is eligible for phone replacement next month; if she wanted a Samsung instead, I would get one for her.

My Palm Pilot also had a storage slot for it's stylus; I will sell it to you for a reasonable price, if you like. You can tell your friends it's retro......:D

Gimme a break. Every Android OEM's goal is to outdo the previous phone that they themselves or another OEM put out...like last week. So if you think they're not competing with each other to one up one another, you're just in denial.

Faster processor? Then what? There are phones with better and faster processors out already or in the pipeline. More RAM? Then what?

Still releasing phones with GB?? Seriously?? I had that on my Motorola Droid in December 2010...and knowing Samsung's record of updating its devices, the Note is not going to get ICS any time soon, and when it does it'll be long outdated by other phones with "faster processors" and "more RAM"

LTE/HSPA has nothing to do with Android, so that's irrelevant.

So you're impressed by a phone with a processor that's already bested by other phones, RAM that's already matched with other phones, a year old OS that's not going to be updated for 6 months minimum and a large colorful screen. That's cool.

This is a common criticism I keep seeing on these forums. People think the ad was a fail because it really didn't show what the device is capable of doing. I'm not too sure if thats needed though.

VW's teaser ad didn't have anything to do with cars.

For those of you who remember the Budweiser frogs or the Wazzup ads... some of those ads had nothing to do with beer.

Some of godaddy.com's ads have nothing to do with website domains too.

I think Samsung's ad implied its product is better than the iPhone as all of the people waiting in line got a Note and just had a massive Glee moment. And it generated a lot of buzz... so in that sense, I do think it was successful. If they made it too technical and spec oriented and geeky, I doubt it would have generated much buzz.

So, how did it show it is better than the iPhone?

The point is those other ads weren't bringing in their competitor's names. If you are going to bring in your competitor, do a good job of showing why your product is obviously the superior ones.

I do agree this ad was not aimed to convince iphone users to change (no ad insulting a group is aimed at the group it's insulting, it's aimed at another group who thinks that group is silly ;) ). But I don't think it did any good job of showing why some one would want the Note over the iphone. Except, "Oh, it's supposedly cool and makes people want it" (but not a clear message why they would want it over the iphone). And honestly, the ad wasn't that fun or humorous so I don't even think it got that message over well either.

I give up. My point is, you can just throw the stylus into the trash and you would still have a brilliant high-def capacitive touchscreen that works perfectly fine with your fingers. Since when was having the option to use a stylus, while maintaining the good qualities of a capacitive screen, a bad thing?

Then it runs better and faster. One of the points you brought up about the iPhone was the faster processor- if you think it's a stupid selling point then don't bring it up yourself.

Did you even read my reply to your previous post?

Here's a link: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/14282827/

It explains that the GN will be getting ICS before the end of next month, with evidence from Samsung themselves.

LTE/HSPA has nothing to do with Android, so that's irrelevant.

How is it irrelevant? You mentioned upgrades to the phone, you never stated 'upgrades to the operating system only'.

So you're impressed by a phone with a processor that's already bested by other phones, RAM that's already matched with other phones, [...] That's cool.

Hey, I thought you iPhone people said that processors and ram didn't matter, and what really matters is how well the device runs. And I can tell you that my Galaxy Note is every bit as smooth as my 4S, so yes, it is cool.

a year old OS that's not going to be updated for 6 months minimum and a large colorful screen.

See above.

BTW, 2.3.7 (the specific version which the Note currently officially runs) is less than half a year old.

You should look at the note. It is something that combines a tablet and a phone.

One of the biggest short comings of tablets right now is the lack of being able to use a stylus. For many things I would love to have one. Big time for taking notes or writing things down. In those things a stylus is just by far better. For basic navigation yeah the finger is great.
