Come on, Voonyx. It's a fun ad, and as the barista dude says, "over the top".

The ad is getting a lot of positive reviews (outside of this thread, of course). Samsung scored a goal during the Super Bowl.

The ad was not intended to persuade those with Apple tattoos on their private parts - it is for "the rest of us".

And 881 replies says that even those with the Apple tattoos noticed....

It's a fun ad, sure, but it's not an effective one. It doesn't highlight any features of the phone except the stylus (which of course is because there aren't any new features other then the stylus) and that's not what's getting positive reviews.

The ad gets good reviews because it's fun, has the Darkness in it, and shows a bunch of people running around acting crazy. All the criticisms of the ad online are because it doesnt show exactly what the phone does (and again, it does nothing new except have a stylus).

Yep, it's kind of hard for those with Apple tattoos not to notice when the thread is posted on the first page of Macrumors, but again, people noticing here won't translate to sales. The point of marketing is to get sales. That's it. Not to make people laugh, not to make people cry, and not to make people who wouldn't buy the phone anyway (the people with Apple tattoos that you described) to think the commercial sucked.

This phone is going to be just like EVERY other android phone, in that it'll be pushed by AT&T for a month, and then usurped by another phone (maybe even put out by Samsung) that beats it in specs. Nothing special here.

Well, I only saw one recognizable iPhone.

Even though I mostly buy Apple, I enjoyed this particular commercial. Some of Samsung's YouTube ads are annoying. But I like this marketing scheme, it's funny.

I am open minded...

Definitely more then one iPhone...http://www.tuaw.com/2012/02/07/apple-enjoys-free-super-bowl-advertising-courtesy-of-ny-giants/

pot, kettle

It doesn't highlight any features of the phone...

How many of the "Mac vs. PC" ads highlighted Apple OSX features? (maybe 2)

Apple ads seldom talk specs or features - most of them focus on a "lifestyle experience", or dancers in front of a white screen.

It sounds hollow to complain that this Samsung ad doesn't mention GigaHz and GigaB.

You're missing the point. Apple doesn't need to sell specs because their phones work great with "outdated" specs. Android OEM's are always selling specs like dual core, quad core, super amoled, megapixels and all this other crap. Android fanatics will often point to specs as the reason why Android is "way ahead" of iPhone.

Then you get a commercial where they focus on a stylus as the only selling point, and when you look at the specs you see they're nothing to write home about because several android phones already have the same specs, or better and the same android fanatics are acting like suddenly spec-whoring is not necessary. Makes no sense.

...you speak with forked tongue.

Apple can do "lifestyle" ads, but if Samsung tries one it's an "epic fail"?

Did you notice that the "pen" only appeared in the first few seconds of the ad, and then when the big guy signed the screen. The rest of the time, no pen.

It's a fun ad, Samsung hit a home run. (Ooops, Super Bowl. They hit a "field goal".)

...way to strawman the heck out of my post...

Let's make this simple. What makes this phone special? And what makes the ad special? Two questions, please provide two answers

Ok cool, so you and I (and apparently TheMacBookPro) are in agreement then? The Note, much like the iPad, is nothing special?

You're argument for why the note isnt special is because of its specs. If that's the case, then ipad isnt special either.

But the note is special because its the only device that bridges the gap between a phone and tablet. People who used to have to carry around a phone and a tablet can now just carry a note... how is that not special?

Ok I can't argue with that....seems niche-y though.

Wanna see a picture of my cat?

...way to strawman the heck out of my post...

Nothing in my post fits the normal definition of "strawman", but whatever...

What makes this phone special?

  • 5.3" super AMOLED screen
  • 4G LTE
  • optional stylus input if you want for some tasks
  • interesting "hybrid" of smartphone and tablet (large smartphone, small tablet)

But don't criticize it for being a large hybrid phone - there are several other smaller Samsung smartphones to chose from. (Some companies don't have a "one size fits all" philosophy.)

And what makes the ad special?

It's fun. Smile. Laugh. Be silly.

It lampoons (what most of the world dislikes about) the stereotypical Apple fans.

The gay dude asking "wanna see a picture of my cat" is a wonderful counterpoint to all of the people with baby pictures on their phones. It's also a great vignette of a failed pickup attempt.

It shows that even those Apple fans can recognize an innovative phone if they pull off their blinders.

It shows the "barista dude" still completely out of touch with anything - but gave him a great one-liner at the end.

It puts the Samsung brand out front (again).

Two questions, please provide two answers

Any other requests?

When I saw the ad I was thinking very innovative if it were 1995.

The thing that makes the phone special is that it's a tablet and a phone at once with a nice stylus for drawing and/or writing which is way better than your using only your finger. The stylus slides right in the phone so it won't be bothersome.

What makes the ad special? Simple, it's a SuperBowl Ad. Superbowl Ads are special.

When I saw the ad I was thinking very innovative if it were 1995.

Then you had an option as a human. You either:

A) read up on the new technology offered, and realized they took an old idea and did some possibly really good things with it making it useful. Even if you will never use it.

B) decide to take Steve's word for it and decide that a stylus is a thing of the past. (Despite the fact that many 3rd party styluses' are sold for the iPad.)

Based on your post you seem like a B kind of person. Good for you.

I can also still buy 3.5" floppy disks. Not once in the two years that I have owned my iPad have I ever needed or wanted a stylus. I guess I am not so swayed by the marketing machine of Samsung.

Sweet so it has a bigger screen which is a subjective preference, screen tech that exists in other phones, LTE which tons of phones have, a...stylus, and its "interesting"...methinks your easily impressed.

But don't criticize it for being a large hybrid phone - there are several other smaller Samsung smartphones to chose from. (Some companies don't have a "one size fits all" philosophy.)

Irrelevant if there's other phones available. We're talking about this one.

It's fun. Smile. Laugh. Be silly.

See my "your easily impressed" comment above. You're clearly the type of person Samsung was targeting with this laughable ad.

It lampoons (what most of the world dislikes about) the stereotypical Apple fans.

Most of the world, huh? Goodness your ambitious!

The gay dude asking "wanna see a picture of my cat" is a wonderful counterpoint to all of the people with baby pictures on their phones. It's also a great vignette of a failed pickup attempt.

Oh ok...and this made you lol? K.

It shows that even those Apple fans can recognize an innovative phone if they pull off their blinders.

Well it was an ad for Samsung...woulda been super bizarre if the actors weren't impressed, right?

It shows the "barista dude" still completely out of touch with anything - but gave him a great one-liner at the end.

It puts the Samsung brand out front (again).

Can't really say it puts the Samsung brand out front unless it actually helps sales...

Any other requests?

YEAH. stop being so transparent...your android is showing.

Surprised people still say things like "epic fail." Does anyone stop to think how cheesy that sounds/looks before saying it?

I haven't used the term in ages - but it's completely the right phrase for voonyx.

;)

Do you have a better phrase to use when replying to a post that's so completely absurd that normal descriptive phrases miss the point?

I dunno, saying "epic fail" is an epic fail in and of itself. And windows phone? Cool, when your up for an upgrade maybe you can get that interesting android phone with a stylus and the same specs as several other android phones!

Nice way of avoiding having to address any of the points from the earlier discussion... Good job.

This thread is just dragging on and on and on... sooooooo.... :p

How to make thread about Samsung Note:

1. Show Samsung ad.
2. Person A: "OMG! IT HAS A STYLUS! EPIC FAIL! STEVE JOBS SAID NO TO STYLUS! WELCOME TO 1990! LOL"
3. Person B: "Well... it has a Wacom digitizer... it's not a normal stylus."
4. Person A: "But the ad still sucked. And you know, Samsung should stop attacking their target audience and competitor. Apple would never do that."
5. Person B: "See Mac vs. PC. Or Apple's Lemmings."
6. Person A: "But its different when Apple does it! Besides, nobody knows what makes the Note so interesting. They need specs!"
7. Person B: "Apple doesn't need specs in their commercials..."
8. Person A: "It's because its Apple. And you still haven't told us why the Note is so special!"
9. Person B: "Well it bridges the phone and tablet. It also has a sty-"
10. Person A: "OMG! IT HAS A STYLUS! EPIC FAIL! STEVE JOBS SAID NO TO STYLUS! WELCOME TO 1990! LOL"
11. repeat.

Someone did something like this like 20 pages ago...so I guess you missed a step:

11. Random guy makes a post about what's going on in this thread

I saw it and thought "yecch".

Seriously, people, it's a commercial. Don't get all worked up about it. Remember in the 90's when Apple aired commercials, humorously showing how the Macintosh was superior to the Windows PC? Remember the Get A Mac ads? This ad is pretty much like those previous Apple ads.

No one can hear you. They're in Fan Boy Land
