it was a clever ad, it was funny, mainly because no matter how hard they try, it will never be better.

Samsung Galaxy Note features, as advertised: its big, has a pen and you can draw a red circle in it.

Samsung make great washing machines ...

After 3 years with an iPhone 3G and iPhone 4, I'm happy to say I love my Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. It's just a better phone for me. Love the ability to really customize things on Android.

Ahhh man... you've just ended your cyber life on MR! Wait for all the down-votes. Good luck my friend, good luck! Be strong! This may shape your future!

Well, just to clarify

You CAN write on, or draw on an iPad with any number of styli. There were many to see at CES and MacWorld/iWorld. How many buy them?

If it does something unique, for a specialized job -- like making art -- sure, okay. In many ways, for serious artists, the iPad could be the greatest Cintiq or other artists' tablets. There's one stylus that actually is pressure-sensitive. Apple doesn't make one, though. Leave it for third parties. Let them find the (relatively small) market. But don't let your developers make nasty pens that are just there because you can use a Windows menu with it. That's what Jobs' quote is about.

There have been quite a few different attempts at styli for the iPad. How many did they sell? A few, for specialized niche apps. How many iPads? That's right. The designs for all these have been different. Which is best for you, if at all? That's up to you. Why should Apple give you a stylus with the iPad? The iPad is made to use with your fingers.

A pen?
a stylus.

they blew it.

If it's required, yep. Nothing more annoying than having to have a pen to do things and you can't find it. So you have to go out and buy a new one for some insane price.

which is why Steve insisted that the iPhone not require a pen.

So which is it??

Anyone notice the ad copy saying "The next big thing is already here" followed a few frames later by "Coming soon". The Samsung folks sound a little confused.

I think the point is missed by many here as you take it as a personal affront.

Samsung's ad points fun at an image that many do not understand. Indeed, many of the Apple "hardcore" waited for days for the new device (& the device before that, & the device before that, etc.)

Samsung capitalized on that to make an ad to appeal to the sensibilities of many: their phone had functionality that competitors did not (e.g. free turn by turn) and you didn't have to wait for it.

Beyond that? It's all marketing. Apple knows this well. Samsung knows this well. Other brands know this well. Many brands know they are not the best. Bud Light Platinum is not the best beer. Doritos is not the best snack food. GoDaddy is not the best registrar, etc.

In the end, every device has advantages & disadvantages. Getting upset over the presentation is kind of silly, IMO.

(Disclaimer: I use a Samsung Infuse 4G on a day to day basis; I have used an iPhone 4S for a reasonable amount of time and believe both devices are fantastic with their own shortcomings.)

Really Samsung - - REALLY?!?! "How cool - it has a stylus!!!!" The first "smartphone" planners had stylus pens. It seems like your taking a step backwards. That's as retarded as saying "How cool - it has a retractable antenna!". LMAO

Are the Samsung phones AMAZING - no. Do they offer more "futuristic" features than the iPhone - yes. But what makes the iphone a top seller is the refined and tightly controlled experience. If you ever used a Samsung - or any android for that matter. It isn't NEARLY as refined or controlled, no matter who the maker. The main problem is that the support for mainstream apps sucks. The new android 4.0 software has VERY few apps when it is released - and even big time apps like the nfl app took WEEKS to get released after 4.0 came out.

The iPhone on the other hand has nearly ALL apps working on new software versions as soon as they are released to the public, and most apps work for ALL iPhones (even original...)

The guy in the room by himself clearly on a macbook laptop said coming soon behind him. Meaning - he chose to go home and wait for the iPhone, is all alone in his apartment being a loser while everyone else is having a huge street party that has samsung phones and is missing out on the fun. Yeah - a really confusing and stupid conclusion to draw. But I'm glad natural selection is still at play. Samsung had to pay millions for that ad to put a bad taste in everyones mouth. But it could have been worse, they could have been coca cola! LMAO

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Grrrrrr

So you do like the new Samsung phone?
Do I like it - yes. I'm not a Apple fanboy and try everything out. I tried out the Galaxy S after my 3GS had an upgrade and couldn't stand the terrible battery life, constantly crashing apps, and just the "unrefinement" of android in general. With each new iPhone you know exactly where everything is, how to get somewhere and where it is located in the menu. With each android - or even samsung for that matter you need to sit down for 30 minutes to try to find everything - and even then you forget sometimes and it becomes a PITA.

As such, I returned the Galaxy S and now use a 4S - couldn't be happier. I just hope Apple doesn't stoop down to their level and make an ad replicating my story. Then we would get a whole bunch of "AT&T vs Verizon" ads both trying to disprove the other's claims based on stats.

The Samsung Note works without the pen; I think the pen is a bonus, even if I would not use it most of the time and prefer my finger as a method of navigation.

I'll bite my tongue and agree on this one because there is simply no way to contest it. Apple has a tighter reign on apps, and this has its positive points, that is indisputable.

I'll disagree with you here in one sense. Every release takes time to adopt to, but as a Touchpad owner (Running CM9 0.6) who has an iPad - the apps are coming. Apple is still ahead on the tablet front, but Android is starting to pose a serious threat. In the past week, three of my favorite apps have made tablet friendly versions for Android. Trying to downplay such momentum is ridiculous. The iPad is still ahead, but android is a looming threat.

I won't dispute this as I don't own an original iPhone, but the iPhone (original) was cutoff before 4.x, correct (it runs 3.x and earlier, correct?) What is the percentage of apps on the app store that runs on iOS 3.x and earlier?

Obviously your new to technology or you would have remembered the incredibly successful Get a Mac commercials showing windows as un cool. Check out youtube, newbie.

Yes but i think apple did it in a different way, I think i read an article about this in the past 6 months. The Im a mac ads targeted the hardware not the user. So it wasn't insulting the users. Where as the Samsung ads clearly do... "your stupid for lining up for an iPhone" (seems to be there main tactic)

The mac ads were more like...
"your PC is OK, and can do stuff...but you should get a mac so can do it even better, with more style"

Its a fine distinction but i think its true.

thoughts ?

But we do want one for our iPads. If you want to use the Ipad to replace your paper note pad for school or work, you will need a stylus....and you will.

Some folks actually type their notes. So no they won't NEED a stylus. Which is why the iPad and iPhone are so great. You can use a stylus if you want but you don't have to have one to do things. Can we say the same thing about the Note.

I am sorry to be contrarian and ignoring the rest... How did the "I'm a Mac" ads target the hardware? Most of the "Mac/PC" ads seemed to target the ease of use vs the PC (Hodgman vs. Long) instead of the hardware itself. Proneness to viruses, iMovie (& other digital media creation), etc., instead of Core i7 vs Core i5, or Mac Mini vs. Dell XPS, etc.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I do not like admitting that I'm wrong, but will do so in the face of proof.

People here seem to not know how the Note works. It works with and without the Stylus, plus if you bother do some research, it works differently than a capacitive stylus and the pen doesn't work with other phones. Ignorance is bliss right?

Emotional connection to Samsung? I doubt that's going to work, if they seriously think they can conjure the same loyalty for their products that Apple have established then I truly think they are deluded.

I've had TV's and monitors by Samsung, they were fine, but they were also the first thing out of the door when replacement time came, and I didn't feel that I wanted to buy another of Samsung product out of loyalty of any kind.

I've got an iPhone and I enjoy it, but this ad was pretty good. Anytime The Darkness are involved, I'm cool with it.

The point is, there are a ton of people are sheep and do waste their time waiting in line. I never have and never will, yet I still get my phone ASAP. Imagine that.

The ad is good, the fact that they are trying so hard means Apple is doing something right, it's all good competitive fun IMHO.

Which apple hated because it insulted the customer. They ran it at the insistence of the ad agency. Everyone thought it was a crap ad and it was. Same thing here.

Uh, no. Steve Jobs screened it, liked it and wanted it for the Super Bowl; the board did not. It was only shown commercially one other time, at a small station in Idaho late at night to qualify for various Advertising Awards.

It is considered even today "groundbreaking" and is consistently listed in the best ads of all time. Directed by Ridley Scott coming off of "Blade Runner", it was not aimed at the end user per se, but at the then behemoth IBM corporation, which was "big brother".

Thanks for playing.
