That Apple trial graphic pretended that Samsung stopped making flip and other phones afterwards, and that they didn't have any all-touch phones available or in development. Samsung responded by pointing this out:

Apple lawyers were so keen to claim Apple's designs as being unique, that they even included the pre-iPhone Samsung F700 design as evidence of "copying" before realizing their embarrassing mistake:

Also interesting was the "IReen" touch UI that Samsung had been developing the year before the iPhone. Apple lawyers bent over backwards to have their images banned from the California trial, because they would prove that Apple's ideas were not unique. The jurors never got to see it:

For that matter, it's known that in mid 2005 Apple was still working on an iPod based iPhone. If you want to present biased before-and-after comparisons, let's look at the Korean-designed Pidion touch smartphone that came out shortly before Apple internally decided to change to all-touch:

Unwired magazine even eerily correctly predicted that Apple might later use a similar design.

Naturally, Apple's lawyers also got the Pidion prior art evidence banned from the California jury. OTOH, in Europe where prior art such as the Pidion evidence was allowed, Apple lost their iPhone design infringement claims against Samsung. It was clear that Apple's design was NOT unique.

As for copying software, don't even get people started on the features that Apple has copied from Android. Or for that matter, originally from people like Jeff Han and his multi-touch demo. Everyone takes the best ideas from each other, and we all benefit. The difference is that Apple often tries to claim them as theirs alone.
^ This. I applaud you for this post. It was a nice read

This reminds me more of the iPhone 5 introduction video:

I particularly like Samsung's comparison of them generally measuring in nanometers to Apple's measuring variance of devices in microns

For those whose math might be rusty at these scales, 1 nanometer = 0.001 microns.

Anyone that doesn't see that Samsung is mocking Apple takes life way too seriously.

Samsung lacks the subtlety and finesse required to troll at this level.

I never said they were identical - most copies aren't - but with all those examples you can easily see how they've taken Apple's version of something, added minor tweaks and then pushed it out as their own.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Apple does the same. It's called following the current market or popular look.

E.g. Apple mocked smaller tablets. Then an Apple SVP used a 7" Samsung tablet and recommended that Apple make the iPad mini.

As for case looks, Apple followed everyone else into phablet sizes and even used HTC's metal case antenna design. They also were not first to use little holes for speakers on the bottom, or that curved design.

As for things like UIs, the whole point of them is to be easily understandable. Which is why it's no surprise that Apple's icons looked very similar to what others had already done.

after_skype.png

That's why it's so stupid when people claim that Samsung should have done theirs differently from Apple. Why, when Apple was just doing what everyone else had done, right down to the left-leaning slant.

Apple's microphone choice also had already been done by HTC:

microphones_winmo.png

Did you bring up keyboards? Apple later copied Android's voice input key:

android_ios_voice_key.png

As for wallet icons, they too had been done before. Should Apple have instead avoided using individual tickets and colors just because others had? No. And neither should Samsung.

wallet.png

It's as blatant as blatant gets I'm afraid.

Using somewhat similar colors or styles or shapes is not blatant copying.

Blatant is Apple directly copying the Swiss Railway clock dial.

Blatant is Apple using a WiFi icon that a third party developer was using. Remember that?

wifi_sync_icon.png

And yes, blatant is Samsung doing a very similar fingerprint entry mode, with partial prints filling in.

The "Edge" is still selling like crazy, making Samsung a hell of a lot of money.

Galaxy S6 sales disappoint in Samsung’s home country

This is hilarious! You're getting trolled successfully by Samsung.

Someone at Samsung HQ is spending his Saturday reading the nerd rage on this forum and laughing so hard, he's snorting his morning coffee.

If I were an executive at Samsung HQ, I wouldn't be laughing right now.

Sure. For brevity, I will give you two. Continuity and Siri. If I have one Apple device Continuity provides no utility for me. If I don't see the need for a voice activated assistant then Siri provides no utility for me.

I didn't ask for Apple features that you don't find useful. I asked for Apple features that provide no real world purpose or utility.

Continuity
A lot of people who own an iPhone also own an iPad and one or more Macs or MacBooks. If you don't believe me walk onto any college campus and see how many students are using Macs vs. Windows. Even years ago, before Ballmer's departure from Microsoft, his executives were frequently photographed running Powerpoint presentations from carefully hidden MacBooks. I use Continuity and Handoff all the time, and it's not difficult to imagine its utility even if you, personally, can't use it.

Siri
Are you kidding me? I use Siri almost exclusively over the GUI when setting reminders, answering quick text messages, asking for directions, checking for a quick weather forecast, checking for movie times, adding items to my shopping list, and certainly for any functions while driving. With the Apple Watch, many early reviewers have commented that Siri works so well, it may well end up being the primary method for interacting with the device.

These two features alone have actually changed how millions of people interact with their devices on a daily basis. Real world utility - not just a bullet point in a product brochure. And unlike Samsung's curved displays, waterproof port covers, user accessible batteries, and removable memory cards, neither Siri nor Continuity will be abandoned in the next year.

copy harder.

Someone should do a Samsung Star Trek parody with "copying" as a substitute for phasers or the warp drive.

Kirk: Scotty! I need more... copying!

Scotty: She cannae take any more, captain. That Xerox core is just about to blooow!

Bones: Damnit Jim, I'm a doctor not a plagiarist!

Ha, good post. Samsung fans are stuck in the past...when people were actually buying Galaxy phones. If this downwards sales trend continues, I expect Samsung will concentrate on making parts for Apple...and making dish washers and TVs.

of all the things to copy from apple they choose the most uptight, pretentious and tired bit.

should rather focus on the details as highlighted in a recent fireball post.

Am I the only one that doesn't think this is meant to be a shameless copy, but a parody?

I think it is just Samsung having a little fun.

They can sure do with a bit of fun. Not that Samsung has much to smile about recently. Their only division that hasn't gone down massively in revenue and profits is the one making parts for Apple.

They copy everybody & everything, not just Apple. Look at their other products. Could some one inform me of an original product by Samsung?

The S6 Edge still looks better than the iPhone, IMO. Samsung could come out with a phone that literally prints money out of thin air and Rene would still come up with some random lame reason why Samsung sucks and the iPhone is the best.

Hmmm, a device that illegally and shamelessly counterfeits money on demand... Sounds like a perfect Samsung product.

Why is he about to punch his girlfriend in the face while wearing an ugly watch?

Well, no. She isn't his girlfriend. It's obvious that she is totally freaked out by the creepy guy with the stalker watch, taking photos of her. What you don't see is the bit later on where he follows her into a restaurant, she asks some nice guys for help, they kick him out, push his face in the snow, and stamp on his watch.

This would be worth bringing up if someone said Android copied iOS. Obviously, all companies copy each other to some extent. After all, everyone's releasing smartwatches now, everyone's releasing tablets, everyone's phones have large screens. Whichever feature someone brings to market, you'll be able to find someone, somewhere who did it first, whether unsuccessfully or not.

But it genuinely seems to be, when Apple adds something to iPhone, Samsung ensures it adds it to the Galaxy as flagship feature as soon as possible. Examples: 64 bit phone processors, finger-print scanner, mobile payments.

If Apple were to copy Samsung this constantly, iPhones in 2012 would have had LTE, 5.5 inch screens, and SD card slots.

Google updated Android Wear before the Apple Watch launched, to ensure it didn't lag behind on features. The reason this forum isn't up in arms about that, is because Google didn't make a huge fuss about the update, then roll an ad about how Apple customers are idiots and Apple copies them.

are their tvs and refrigerators doing "badly" now as well?

I was thinking she looks like he slipped her a roofie.

A Braun/Zeno watch from 2011:

"Braun is relaunching a new line of wristwear (above) designed by zeon. what zeon kept was minimal and functional, one recessed button and a distinctive scroll wheel is all you get, we think. also comes in silver."

LOL -- the watch is a rectangle, dark display, and the controls are a button and a scroll wheel.

The watch has a tiny display showing digital numbers. Perfect for ape-descended life forms that are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

The scroll wheel would be in about the worst possible position - in the middle of the display - if the display were any bigger.

The price is amazing - £499 for steel band and £470 for the watch with a plastic band.

BTW. Wrist watches have had scroll wheels for more than 100 years. But usually in a better place than on the Braun watch.

We are digital craftsmen ?????

Are you having a laugh ???

More like ' we are digital copycats'

These Koreans have no shame. So corrupt

Just have a look on the internet and post any numbers that you can find. The whole TV market for example is in desperate search for something that makes people buy now TVs. 3D and 4K are only bought by a minority.

Who cares about these adds?

The Galaxy 6 is another POS Android device that can't manage even with 3g of RAM for god sake!!! It's just another POS Device running an OS written with JAVA.

Read some of the Android Threads on reddit. With 3g's the Galaxy 6 uses 85% of it's memory just turning on.

The 6 outperforming it in 90% of processes with 1g !!

The 6 is by far the Best Smart Phone, and will only get better with the 6s. As long as they keep Ive's away from it. :apple:

TV market = slow turnover X razor thin margins

Samsung. Where good design comes first. Dual edges, because everybody needs duplicate sets of the same icon on their lock screen.
