Apple is basically a patent troll at this point. The original iPhone bore an interface (and still does) that is remarkably similar in layout to the Samsung F700, which was announced at CES in 2006 prior to the iPhone. Samsung isn't suing Apple over that -- but I bet had they known Apple would get their panties in a bunch over the same thing down the road, they would have.

It's not the first time Apple has lifted features from other sources, and it varies greatly. Their early OSes had low-level features present in things like DOS, and even today -- the iOS jailbreak community basically does nothing but feed Apple "new" ideas on their own platform.

They should stop being ridiculous and compete. Come out with something markedly better than what's being "imitated" so that nobody wants the imitations instead of trying to play patent whack-a-mole because there's a viable competitor to your product.

What a nonsense.

You forgot to mention that Apple stole Xerox inventions.

Maybe if Samsung had actually stuck with that F700 interface Apple wouldn't have a legal beef with them right now.

Oh, and I don't think "remarkably similar" means what you think it means.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8L1)

If Samsung can't rein in their infringing ways then the offending products need to be barred from sale wherever possible.

Thanks, I plan to, and the apps will come out in due time, just like it did for Android smartphones.

There are not any apps I'm missing being a Honeycomb user and most of my phone games scale fine with no need to have a tablet optimised version.

Example below: (taken from my Nexus and Xoom)

One of the biggest ways iOS and Android differ is the way apps have been designed with multiple screen sizes in mind due to the diversity of screen sizes.

Apple can't patent troll their own patents that they're using, which are being used unlawfully by Samsung.

Apple aren't patent trolls. They're plaintiffs.

I didn't know that any of the lawsuits has finalized. Can you give me a link to the sentences?

HTC is already paying Microsoft patent royalties. it's just a matter of time before Samsung, Motorola, etc. starts paying MS, Apple and Oracle.

And HTC paying royalties to MS has to do with a lawsuit from Apple to Samsung in...

I don't know why Apple/Samsung/Oracle hire lawyers when things are so obvious.

Oh, wait.

That Samsung phone was as thick as two iphones when it came out. it was huge.

It had a slide out keyboard as well.

I don't think it was multi touch. I think it was drag and drop.

Aside from it beinga grid of icons which is done horribly that is nothing like an iphone.

Samsung gave up going this direction and copied the iphone with thier galaxy line.

And how can take advantage of iPhone/ipad accesories?

Well... if they copied the pin connector then anything that plugs into an iPad (like a sound docking station) would plug into the Tab and work too. That would open up many accessories that are Apple specific right now. Like the car dock in my Mini Cooper.

Well, if you read the thread you can learn that they hasn't copied any pin scheme.

Well... they didn't so your argument is invalid.

PDMI connector pin-outs are not the same as Apple's connector.
So no, the Samsung cable won't work for any Apple devices or accessories. ;)

Didn't see this coming. Not like Samsung's constantly pushing the line of too-far-ness in terms of copying with every product they release.

Just to make it clear, I'm not an Apple fanboy or anything, I'm actually probably going to buy the 10.1 for my dad as I think he'll prefer it to the iPad I got him recently, but I mean, look at the dock connectors for example!

Image

I do like Samsung, I just wish they could keep going with products like the Galaxy S2 and actually take their own deviation off the path, instead of just mirroring Apple.

EDIT: Might even keep the 10.1 for myself. He has an android phone, so the iPad compliments it well - I think having an iPhone and the 10.1 myself works well too, perhaps.

EDIT #2: Noticed the Samsung's connector is also a bit longer. Case dropped! :p

PDMI. Samsung's connector is following PDMI format, an industry standard connector format. google it.

i actually prefer the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 over the iPad. it seems that a lot of people here haven't even really taken the time to use it.. it also seems that there's a lot of negativity from iPad users whenever these topics come up. it's like some of you act like it's a personal attack against your mother or something.

Exactly! I wonder why Apple isn´t using widgets at all.... The space on the iPad is there, but it´s unused. I hate having to click on buttons before I actually get to the informations I want. Once set up it´s far easier and faster with widgets.
iOS sadly enough is quite behind...it almost looks like straight from 2007.
Love my iPhone for the batterylife and the integrated iPod. Sadly enough, thats why I bought it...because back then with android 2.1....those features sucked.

That's a load of crap. The F700 was never shown until AFTER the iPhone.

Likewise, Apple is already paying Microsoft license fees for ActiveSync, Klausner Technologies for Visual Voice Mail, a lot to Nokia for radio patents, and so on. Looks like they'll probably escape paying Kodak, though.

Apple et al just bought thousands of Nortel patents. Google just bought a thousand IBM patents. License fights will jam up the courts for years.

It's getting a bit ridiculous, especially as these costs are ultimately paid by us, the consumer. Phone makers already include $25-$40+ a phone for fees such as these.

Samsung reduces its carbon footprint. Good.

[...] While the patent dispute between Apple and Samsung spans numerous lawsuits in a number of countries, today's news marks what appears to be the first tangible effect of the dispute on Samsung's device sales.

Environmentalists (and the entire human race, really) should rejoice. Samsung will cut back its carbon footprint by not building, packaging and shipping yet another doomed iPad clone to Australia.

Taking that environmental spin even further, the Samsung suit will send a clear message to current iPad cloners and would-be iPad cloners. Copy Apple too closely and you will be sued and lose. Thus, current and would-be iPad cloners are less likely to hire employees to build iPad clones. Fewer, if any, employees will drive cars/trucks/motorcycles to get to their employers' offices to work on iPad clones. And that will reduce particulate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions generated in the overall iPad clone market.

Greenpeace should give Apple a medal.

Ups, can you give me the link to any sentence about Apple Samsung lawsuits?

Thanks

Not if there are not a sufficient number of devices in the wild to make it financially viable to develop for Android tablets.

Microsoft makes more money from Android than Google

And it's just a matter of time before Apple is making more $$$ from Android than Google. ;)

Microsoft already makes $5 to $15 in patent royalties from handset manufacturers per copy of Android shipped. And it appears that Microsoft charges handset manufacturers a higher royalty if they don't make WP7 handsets.

http://www.electronista.com/articles/11/05/30/htc.downs.talk.of.microsoft.squeezing.on.android/

Google is infamous for shipping pre-beta quality software, especially Android. Obviously their Android business model is pre-beta quality as well.
