I love these media spinners. The article doesn't mention the 1 model of Apple's (or 3 if you count 3GS/4/4S) vs many of Samsung's (which is at least a few 10s). I'm sure if you split Samsung's sales/shipments for each individual phone, it'll be awful reading.

iPhone is king regardless what statistics the media want to chuck out to try and make Apple look 2nd best.

The general public used to believe whoever had the most phones on the market (one time - Nokia, which was true. 9/10 people had a Nokia), it was the best company choice. Apple have turned that on it's head.

Quality first, quantity second.

Phone to phone I doubt they sold more.

I believe they have sold more all round..But wasn't it a couple of months ago we heard that these figures do not include returns due to dissatisfaction with the operating of the phone. This could be around a over a 1/3 of those purchased.

Apple's profit margins and outstanding reputation should count for something. :p

The Apple reputation accounts for a lot. It helps drive the huge sales of the iPhone and iPad. Personally I fail to see the reason to be happy a company is making a huge profit from goods I purchase, but that's just me.

You and LTD still don't get it.

Whether it's 1 phone or 1000 - the fact is - for every customer that has a Samsung phone, Apple doesn't not have them as a phone customer.

Apple can't have certain customers, the ones who go in for the cheap, low-end models. Do you think, for example, the person going in for the cheap ZTE model can swing an iPhone?

Apple doesn't ship junk. But there will always be a massive and relatively healthy market for junk, that is priced accordingly.

Everyone has their own business model, but they're going to be compared. No one exists and plays in a vacuum. Quite frankly, a successful horizontal business model will always be less impressive - by the sheer fact of its corner-cutting and market flooding with products that are all over the place like a dog's breakfast - than a successful vertical business model that a) puts User Experience first and b) refuses to ship the sort of compromised gear that OEM box-makers tend to push in droves (and that are often priced accordingly.)

So the Samsung definition of "success" is really like kissing your sister. It's the lazy way into the prom.

For me, I'm happy because Apple has sufficient money to innovate more and give us better products in the future.

I have zero Apple stock and make enough so I don't need any. But this all assures is Apple is going to continue for long and surprise us with great products.

Apple's share of the industry profits(the entire Mobile Phone Industry) were close to 67% a month or two back.
Even better than I thought. I looked for a Pie chart and this was the most current I could find. I love pie charts. Wow... 67% of the entire Industry. I didn't know that. That is astounding.

People all want their horse to win. They want the phone that's in their pocket to be the most popular. You know what? Who cares? My first Mac was made in 1994 and I stuck with the platform for one reason... it was a better experience than anything I saw on the Windows side. I had to work with Windows at work so I had a clear perspective. Yes. They WERE more expensive. Now, for $1200 you can get the 21.5" iMac which is an amazing machine and for just $500 more, you can get into the 27" all-in-one iMac... There is nothing available for $1700 that matches the 27" iMac where you get computer and monitor. Nothing. The machine is more than capable and the build quality is 2nd to none.

Back to phones. People can be satisfied with (1) something NOT made by Apple; (2) something that costs less; (3) something with more specs on paper... I'll just keep using my iPhone 4S model with it's amazing screen, camera and personal data assistant that finds stuff for me and types out my text messages for me as I dictate to it!

Like as if apple never spins any numbers. Just look at their redic graphics and statistics during their keynotes.

But what do i care, im a customer. I dont give a beep about who is better than who. All those arguments on here always remind me of certain body parts boys like to compare.

Is this for real?

Your opinion. And your analogies are always head scratchers. You might think you're poetic or amusing. Trust me - you're not.

As for affordability - it's true - there are many phones less expensive than the iPhone. But at the same time - there are MANY phones which - for the user are the same or even more expensive than the iPhone.

But you wreak of elitist attitude - so I expect nothing less.

Stop resenting the fact that Apple doesn't appeal to everyone. It's not a negative or ding in Apple's "armor" - it's the real world. Enjoy your tech. That's all that's important.

And yes - I do think you resent ANY success ANY OTHER company aside from Apple has. It's quite sad.

Apple can't have certain customers, the ones who go in for the cheap, low-end models. Do you think, for example, the person going in for the cheap ZTE model can swing an iPhone?

Apple doesn't ship junk. But there will always be massive and relatively healthy market for junk, that is priced to match.

Everyone has their own business model, but they're going to be compared. No one exists and plays in a vacuum. Okay so...Apple makes a handful of iPhones compared to the hundreds of Samsung models out there? I think it speaks more towards how impressive it is that Apple has one line of phones that's doing battle with other major companies that have multiple products and is outselling most of them.

Exactly. BTW, iMac is worth every penny. There's not a machine cheaper than an iMac for that kind of an experience and even specifications if that's how people understand it. Love it.

See, how simple it is? People don't get that.

My mother hates my gift to her - Mozart7. I cannot help it. It was cheap and something different than an iPhone4 so I gifted it to her. :|

Well, we learn. :)

apple screwed up with the 4S taking too long to ship. a lot of people bought the Samsung SGS 2. it was shipping around the world since May and in the US since september. a lot of the tech geeks bought the unlocked international version for use on AT&T

Who cares?

Who cares? It is profitability that matters. No one will catch Apple for years in that category.

Do you feel the same when you buy a car? Shop at the supermarket? Gasoline? Buy insurance? I just find the logic to be a bit unusual.

Who cares? It is profitability that matters. No one will catch Apple for years in that category.

Why is this so important to you?

Next time you go and buy anything, please give them some 10% extra so that they can improve on their product some more.

Is this for real?

Are you crazy? Just read what you write.

I don't give my money to a company just because I want them to progress.
I pay money to get their new awesome product. The money that I spend is used up for innovation and other purposes. Why shouldn't I be happy with that?

You would always need something to nitpick and moan about. Sure, go ahead.

The only reason I don't have an iPhone is because I dislike AT&T (I only have my iPad with Unlimited 3G Plan with them) Plans; way too expensive, and no in-between plans. Compared to what I have with T-Mobile (mainly offering Samsung and HTC phones), it would be double per month.
And I'm not considering Sprint or Verizon because these are CDMA, not GSM.

So I'm still holding off from buying an iPhone. I'm sure a lot of people can't afford AT&T's Plans, opting for a Samsung phone.
Also, youngsters want Smartphones now; not every parent can afford buying them an iPhone, so a Samsung or HTC seem like the best economical alternative. Anyways, any Smartphone can do texting and Facebook, which is mainly what all these youngsters want or care about.

Q4 may show a different picture, with the addition of Sprint and the dual-system iPhone, which makes it more attractive.

And of course Q3 was a waiting quarter; mainly casual iPhone users or unexperienced users bought an iPhone during Q3, as the rest of us were expecting a newer model in October.

So there's room for all to compete in the cheap Smartphone category, and Apple just enter it with the subsidized free iPhone 3GS. This is also to make a big difference in Q4.

I know the claim has seen been redacted but is that even possible?

if return rates were that high (30-40% as that site 1st claimed) we would see less Android handsets being picked up by carriers, seems the opposite is happening

I don't get why people are so confused with the 1 vs 100 comparison which is a very valid comparison. That's not to say that all companies have to follow Apple's model, but the fact remains if you flood the market with something you're going to ship more. It's not rocket science, its not some epiphany, and its not some "OMG!!!!!" thing. It's common sense.

It's a model that works, as shown by Samsung's success. But that doesn't somehow equate to quality or Samsung phones being the "better" phone. It's far more a testament to iPhone that it outsells every individual Samsung phone (and probably many (most?) combined) than it is that Samsung shipped 20 million phones.

Re: sales vs shipments. This is not the tablet market. Samsung's retailers have been selling their devices for years. In the case of the Galaxy series, end user sales are bound to be very close to shipments (sales to stores).

Re: multiple devices. Apple doesn't break down their sales, but various comments from AT&T makes it seem as if almost half their iPhone sales are of the $99 model. Now it will be "free" and there will be three models for sale.

I doubt seriously that most people will want to divide iPhone sales figures into three smaller chunks... instead, they will continue to lump them all together just as Samsung does.

(Exception: both Apple and Samsung sometimes post individual model sales if they reach a milestone.)

What happened to the old days when Mom just wanted a very simple and easy to use flip phone? Even Moms are getting spoiled with technology nowadays.
