Congrats, Samsung! No need for people to be so bitter towards them about it, this news won't tempt me to go out and buy a Samsung anymore than I'd like to buy an iPhone next time round anyway. But again, good work, Samsung.

You need to read the article bfore commenting on it. It's not 20 vs 17. It's 27 million vs 17 million. Everybody was expecting Samsung to ship 20 million smart phones but Samsung did much better. Apple is now a distant second. As far as shipping vs selling is concerned it's really simple. Samsung is not in a retail business. Hence they "ship" their goods. Apple on the other hand is a huge retailer. They do sell retail to people. They have to report sales.

And just FYI, Steve being mind boggled is just a PR stunt. After all he was a salesman not an engineer.

You do know that these aren't the real figures?

These are just some predictions. I am pretty sure they are gonna be huge and more than Apple's but 27M is a prediction.

Additionally - if people think that millions and MILLIONS of phones are just taking up space in stores - they're a bit cuckoo for cocoa puffs. I'm not saying stores don't have inventory - but people want to just write off MILLIONS of phones sitting around. I don't see it.

Apple's phones are sitting on shelves too. Not every phone shipped is SOLD. Apple stores, Carriers and other retailers aren't "iPhoneless"

Again, shipped versus sold. Way to gloss over that part. And NO, the 3GS has not been bouncing between $49 and Free most of this year. It went to free 2 weeks ago today. Many Samsung phones in peoples' pocket have been gimmes.

If you want to talk -- either talk about Apple's $108 Billion earnings or talk to the hand.

Much was made of the... Playbook or Touchpad, whichever, sitting on shelves and Best Buy wanting to ship them back. That hasn't happened with these phones. Therefore, it's incumbent upon you to prove that vast quantities of phones are sitting on shelves unsold.

And yes, the 3Gs has been $49 or free for much of this year. Not from Apple, but AT&T ran specials on it quite frequently this year.

To bad they have to have all that writing in the back side. I would love to just have the iPhone and nothing else, since I have yet to ever put a case on mine. Glass is just to cool to hide from the world :)

get yourself a verizon phone. Pretty much empty on the back.

These stats are for 3rd quarter that already ended. They are not predictions. The data was produced by research firm Strategy Analytics. This is as good as it gets because Samsung does not report these stats (not required to).

There's discrepancies in sales versus shipped, always. You cannot definitively say who's doing better when Samsung does not release actual sales numbers. Consider some of the recent tablet competitors... they shipped a fair amount in some cases but sold barely any. Obviously that dichotomy isn't the case here, but I'd like to see how full the inventory channels are.

That said, it's entirely reasonable for Samsung to be shipping far more smart phones; 1) they have more models to appeal to everyone's taste, 2) they run a larger price gamut, thus appealing to more people, and 3) they run Android, which has become a de facto smart phone standard of late. If you appeal to more people, you sell more.

Would be curious to know average profit margin per handset though.

Funny how everyone assumes Steve is in heaven.

Funny how everyone assumes there's a heaven. See the gross over-labeling?

The iPhone 4 has always been 1€ here. Your point?

Its slowly becoming the "edHardy" of phones nowadays, im sick of seeing it everywhere. I miss those good old gen 1 times a bit lol

Please link to iPhone4 for €1. Let's see how much it costs on contract.

What I was referring to was a Samsung Galaxy S2 selling for $2 only without contract.
Do you understand the difference?

You were referring to a tiny promotion, actually, not any actual retail price.

so 10 in a few days equates to millions? that's some politician math

Good to see Samsung driving the smart phone industry, they make some brilliant products.

Are you crazy? Just read what you write.

I don't give my money to a company just because I want them to progress.
I pay money to get their new awesome product. The money that I spend is used up for innovation and other purposes. Why shouldn't I be happy with that?

You would always need something to nitpick and moan about. Sure, go ahead.

Surely you understand that other companies don't have a problem doing R&D with their "meagre" profit margins - as well as doing just fine.

You sir, yourself and your kind, you are the reason that my iPhone stays in my pocket when at a client's, you are the reason that my work laptop is not a Mac when I wanted it to be one.

Your naivety is staggering. As if one is talking to kids. Probably you are one.

Now you have a problem with someone reporting their personal experience. Heavens forbid someone would ever say something negative about Android or W7

No, I 'don't have a problem, I laugh when people exaggerate so much to make a point that make them as unbelievable.

One thing is saying that Android have less polished apps or that iPhone has BT capped. Another thing is saying that Android has zero productivity or iPhone is crap.

Look? Very different things.

Funny how everyone assumes Steve is in heaven.

If not, hell will look different a few years from now. The devil will wear a black turtleneck and bluejeans, data management will be outsourced to heaven because it is "in the cloud." Hell will not be as hot anymore because the devil's iPad allows only temperatures up to 95°F/35°C (non-operating temperature: 113°F/45°C)...

Am I suppose to feel inferior about owning an iPhone? Who cares about the sales numbers! I bought an iPhone and 'Joe' bought a Samsung phone, what gives? This is how companies create brand identity, thus drawing a line in the sand and expecting consumers to take sides. IMHO

There's a lot of different b/w Apple and some company that provides insurance or is a supermarket.

I don't even know why I am explaining this to you.

Why is it different? They all provide you with a product or service and some are better than the others. I'm asking for your reasons or opinions as I find it odd as a consumer. A stockholder is a different story.

in one random report, Apple trails and people start to contemplate that Apple's future is doomed.

Funny.

Yeah this is like the people who said "This is the beginning of the end for Apple" after the 4S was announced. A week later, 4million sold. Analysts are annoying enough, but thank goodness it's not the people on this board who are doing the analyzing.
