I've seen in forums that some people are not giving up their Note 7 even the original production. I think it's the same people who happily take their free coupon after being poisoned at Chipotle.

Take two seconds and read the post I was responding to. It was responding to why people would take glee in such a misfortune.

To answer you directly, I don't care the choice of phone/computer/table that you or any other person makes or has made on here. The behavior I find bizarre is people that find a sense of "pride" and self-worth in a piece of electronic equipment or in a company (Apple, Samsung or any other the others) that does not give one iota about you, other than taking your money.

For someone who "doesn't care", you certainly seemed to take perverse pleasure in pointing out the following observation.
They've never accomplished anything on their own, so they are "winning" through their choice of a phone.

For me, it's not at all unlike being awed by a display of strength and power. Have you never been amazed by Usain Bolt or Serena Williams completely and utterly dominating their sport? These people don't know who I am and likely don't care a **** about me either way. Doesn't stop me from admiring their work and rooting for them.

Same with Apple. I admire their work and respect their strength and love their guiding philosophy and I find it awesome how they do things their own way and prosper for it while making the rest of the competition look like utter idiots.

I think it says more about the originator of the quote that he has chosen to dismiss outright something he doesn't comprehend rather than choose to study and understand it.

Who wants to support a brand that needs to rush their product to market just to make a sale instead of building something of quality and let that quality attract sales?

I think we have seen the last Galaxy Note.

If there's a silver lining to this, I think that safer battery technologies will be implemented more quickly due to the magnitude of this story.

If you asked a random person earlier this year about exploding phone batteries, most would shrug you off. If you asked the same question today, people would respond "Those Samsung phones?".

I can tell you one thing, Samsung will be working diligently to get a safer battery technology into their phones as soon as possible, which would give us what we want: better battery tech.

Samsung is getting all the heat, but I'm pretty sure it's the company providing the battery components which is to really blame. I'm pretty sure most other companies (Apple first) are keeping a low profile because it could very well have happened to them too.

Samsung designed the phone, they ordered and specified a battery size and type. If it fails this fast then it's down to Samsung for not testing the materials enough.

As for it could happen to Apple, it did with Macbook Pro batteries supplied by Sony a few years ago.

In this case, though, it was a Samsung made battery.

This situation will make the Tylenol recall look like a cakewalk. People will not forget anytime soon.

Why is this only happening in the US? Seems strange no reports of fires elsewhere. Maybe it's only that batch that's affected?
There were reported issues elsewhere too. I haven't paid close attention, but I do remember stories from China on the same issue.

As someone who owned a Note 7 for a brief period and then was shuffled to the S7 edge, I have to ask, with those devices being basically the same, minus the pen and the TouchWiz updates, the only "dramatic" hardware difference is the inclusion of the Iris scanner. Is it possible that this new hardware is the problem for the Note 7? I mean, maybe it's drawing too much power, maybe it's on, even when the red light isn't visible? I don't know, but for me, that seems like the first place I'd look, as again, it's the only really substantial difference in the devices, even after switching batteries.

Either way, I'm cool, I took back the S7 edge, as I only wanted the Note for the Pen, not TouchWiz, and got myself the iPhone 7 instead and I'm just riding out the year until the iPhone 8. I only wanted a change of scenery until the iPhone 8 anyway, I guess the grass was already green when I had my iPhone 6 Plus.

Fly that flag with pride Abazigal.

oh wow, Samsung has truly made a bang with their Galaxy 7
Note 7 is it? Already lost count in the sea of the many galaxy and android devices out there

It is more hilarious that Samsung actually has "fans" though - a company who notoriously just make rather cheap devices at almost premium prices. I can understand being a Google fan or an Android fan - and there are lots of decent Android handsets if thats the OS you prefer - but a Samsung fan is just odd. There's nothing they do that excels in any region, or get "cultly" about.

Presumably Samsung's studied mediocrity is the very reason Apple contracts with Samsung every year for key supplies for its own premium hardware. Because that would be the logical thing to do.

Samsung didn't become the biggest player in the Android market for nothing.

The travesty here is that there are people that had the previous version of the Note, were happy with it, and upgraded to get the new features of the new model. Now what do they do? Is the previous version still available? How much will it cost for them to get their old phone back?

Was genuinely going to be my next phone but Samsung have royally screwed up. Again and again.

This is shameful.

Agreed. I was looking to get one of these too, but it's given me time to reassess and now looking at the One Plus 3. Don't see a point in spending £600+ on a phone that I'll replace in 2 years.

Meanwhile, in Cupertino.

This was on Steve Jobs anniversary death?

This is the right thing for Samsung to do. It will possibly spark some iPhone 7 sales, but it isn't something Apple supporters should be happy about. Competition breeds innovation and overall better products for us, the consumers. Yes, Samsung copied a lot from Apple years ago, but had they not the smart phone market as well as what the current iPhone is could be much worse. Samsung Mobile certainly wouldn't be where they are at today without Apple, but don't think Apple would be where they are without Samsung forcing their hand on some things. This gives Apple a chance to win some people over, but hopefully Apple has something good up their sleeves for next year, I imagine Samsung will be under more pressure than ever to come back with a great phone next year.

IMO, Samsung does make the best hardware amongst all the smartphone makers. They suck in software quality and upgrades but there is no beating them in hardware....until the Note 7 of course. But the S6, S7, the edge variants and even the Note 5 are beautiful, compact devices

There are some Note 7 owners who still want the phone despite the explosive issues, and somehow Apple users are the ones being called sheep

Yeah, I'd probably be considered one of those. I really want to keep my Note 7, but sadly doesn't look like that's going to happen. It's a stunningly good phone -- absolutely the best I've ever had. I was an iPhone user for every single device until the 4S (still own multiple iPads) when I switched to Android. Every Android device was just OK to 'pretty good' until the Note 5 and then the Note 7 -- they're brilliant devices.

  • Incredible AMOLED display
  • Edge to edge display (no bezel)
  • Great battery life
  • Best camera's I've ever used (people routinely think it's DSLR quality)
  • Unmatched flexibility in Android
  • Wireless charging
  • Best Google integration
Many of those things won't matter to people and that's fine. Once I'm able to, I'll return the device and probably get an iPhone 7 Plus and yeah, I consider it a downgrade. Horrible? No, of course not, but I'm losing a lot of key features, especially in the display and wireless charging. I'm debating the S7 Edge, but I don't like the way it feels in hand, too much 'edge' where the Note 7 was just right. It's down to those two, but leaning towards the iPhone. If I go that route, I'll only keep it for a year until the next Note device or if Apple really delivers a lot of the rumors in the iPhone 8.

Its sad to see such a feature rich phone go waste due to hurrying up in order to be one up with Apple.

I had used Note 3 in past and loved it, although I found the Note 5 underwhelming and sold it off in 2 months.

Maybe the reason I was using iPhones since 2008 made me dislike it.

But seeing such a popular flagship product be such a huge disaster is shocking. That too after Samsung recalled and replaced it.

Samsung should shelve it completely and work on a safe Note 8 for 2017 instead.

*Tim Cook reads this post and ponders quietly to himself*

minutes later:

"Jony, I'm postponing the iPhone 8 until 2018, bring me those colour option rejects for the 7"

Who knows, maybe he will buy all the Note 7, rebrand them with :apple: logo and call it innovation.

But I bet anything that with :apple: logo none of these rebranded phones will explode, even if they may bend and have touch disease.....

Gee...I hope not. I really like the Note series. In fact, I am secretly hoping Samsung improves on their software upgrade policy in the next few years and that is when I will go back to the Note line. It is the most versatile of the all the mobile devices I have had so far.

The Note 7 debacle should be a good spanking for Samsung. At least they will make every effort to improve whatever went wrong for the Note 7 in their next devices.
