That would include not switching phones every year, which seems to be the base of everyone claiming to have dozens of chargers laying around.
Telling people not to spend the money to products they want when they want them is not the answer. Cutting down on environmental waste is the better way to go.

It has been common for a while now. Newer computers have USB-C ports, newer Apple products have bricks like the iPad Pro (which again I threw in my drawer because I already have several USB-C bricks around the house).

Even if 99% of people buy even third party USB-C bricks, its still a 1% improvement to the environment. But I think the percentage is much better than you think. All my family has USB-C bricks. My friends do. They can use new computers.

You don't even need to give Apple another $1. Just get an Anker - https://www.anker.com/products/variant/powerport-c1/A2018121
I personally have no use for usb-c. YMMV.

Good for Samsung. Apple used to have a sense of humor (I’m a Mac, your a PC) that we all enjoyed. As a professional cynic, there is no doubt Apple had motives other than the environment when they eliminated the chargers. It is all about the money. If Apple really cared about the environment, they would make their products less disposable.

What do you think produces a bigger carbon footprint, a phone or a charger? If environment is the concern, of course.

By the way, if we really want to take good care of our home, the Earth, it’s more than possible that are going to stop buying whatever we want whenever we want just because we can. But that’s another matter.

It's a new phone. If people are coming from a previous version, they likely aren't going to have a 20W USB-C Power Adapter already. The power adapter needs to be packaged, with additional paper, additional closures, packaged separately.

Cost is one thing, but saying environmental reasons, I just don't buy it. Apple was making people ship back their Watch Series 6 with solo loops because it was a set rather than just swapping out the band at an Apple Store. That alone isn't an environmental friendly option (requesting a box to be shipped to you, transporting it through a shipper to some depot to be processed, a brand new watch being shipped from China to you). Luckily they reversed course, but let's be frank about the environmental reasoning.

You just explained why there was no price decrease - its a new phone. Would people be happier if they sacrificed some of the new tech but included the adapter to have the price the same? Or would people be happier with a $50 increase in the cost of the product?

That Apple Watch issue is entirely different when most of the Apple Stores, like the only one near me within 100 miles, is closed due to COVID.

I literally had to start giving away charging bricks because we had accumulated so many.

My wife keeps one pair of earpods in her backpack, I keep one at my desk and one in my work bag, and then I think I have two more sitting in a drawer, but then almost always use my AirPods.

Some people might find the change silly.
I totally get it.

Same here. I have WAY too many cables and adapters.

I'd bet $20 they stop including it in 2021. They can't think for themselves.

They did the same thing with the headphone jack.

I'm fine with them removing the power brick. I had a ton laying around.

However, the fact that they choose this year to provide a Lightning->USB-C Cable without providing a brick sucks. I don't have a USB-C Brick. And the cables are crap so I really need a new cable soon. Meh.

Samsung on its social channels is mocking Apple for removing the power adapter from the iPhone 12 lineup and other iPhone models, pointing out the fact that the Samsung Galaxy smartphones continue to ship with a power adapter.

samsungfacebook.jpg

"Included with your Galaxy," reads a Samsung Facebook post that features a picture of a power adapter.

Apple notably is no longer providing power adapters or EarPods with iPhone purchases, a change applicable to the new iPhone 12 models and new purchases of iPhone 11, iPhone SE, and iPhone XR models. Apple says that the change will let it cut down on carbon emissions both through the elimination of the accessories and through the smaller box size iPhones now use.

Apple at Tuesday's event said the shift was made for environmental reasons, but there has been speculation that Apple may have removed the accessories to cut costs due to the expense of the 5G modems used in the new iPhone lineup. Apple's iPhones ship with just a USB-C to Lightning cable, and power adapters and headphones must be purchased separately.

Though Samsung is touting the USB-C power adapter that comes with current Galaxy models, rumors have suggested that Samsung too plans to stop including chargers in the boxes of some of its smartphones starting in 2021. Samsung is allegedly planning to nix power adapters because chargers "have become widespread" and doing so will cut production costs.

It's not clear if this will happen, and Samsung may opt to keep offering power adapters to differentiate its smartphones from Apple's iPhones. Samsung did, however, make fun of Apple for removing the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 in 2016 before copying the decision and releasing the 2018 Galaxy A8 without a headphone jack.

Samsung has a long history of mocking Apple's design and product decisions, oftentimes prior to adopting some of the same changes. Samsung this year is targeting the iPhone 12, which competes with its Galaxy Note20 5G and Galaxy S20 5G lineup. In addition to the rib about the power adapter, Samsung has also shared a tweet that mocks Apple for being late to introduce 5G.

Apple's first iPhone 12 models will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow, with the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro launching first. The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available for pre-order on November 6.

Well, Personally the last thing I need is another charger and Samsung will probably follow suit once they figure out how much money apple will save by skipping the charger and putting the savings into new innovations.

I'll have to pay around 70€ to get Earpods, Lightning cable and 5W charger. No, I don't already own those. What really sucks is that Apple lightning cable is proprietary. If Apple was for real they would include a promotion where you can get them for free or massive discount if theres need. There should be a law that prohibits this. You don't sell an consumer electronic product with no way to power it.

Aside from the fact that most people already have chargers... and you can get them absolutely anywhere... please stop suggesting we need laws for something as trivial as your desire to not have to make a secondary purchase for a couple bucks. When you buy a car, do you whine because the auto dealership isn’t also a gas station?

I get that Samsung is quite hypocritical, but to be fair, Samsung has also included USB-C adapters for years now, unlike Apple, where only last year's iPhone 11 Pro models came with the 18W USB-C adapter (as opposed to the standard 5W adapter).

Here is my line of thought.....

There are two big players in the mobile phone industry, Samsung and Apple.

Someone puchasing a new iPhone 12 likely either already has a old iPhone, with both usb-a charger and usb-a lighting cable (they can leave the usb-c cable in the box and it will still work for slow charging) or likely converted from Samsung, which means they already have a usb-c charger (and can just use the included usb-c to lightning cable.)

Somehow apple is getting lots of criticism on these web forums for including a usb-c to lightning cable, instead of a usb-a version.

in this case though, Apple claiming it was about the environment while not dropping prices is being a lying liar.

To be fair, saying you are doing something to help the environment doesn’t have to result in a reduction of price in order to be true. Why? I for one am very glad they chose to do this. I literally have a drawer full of new chargers o don’t need. I don’t need a new one with every device I buy.

95% of these chargers will end up in landfills. Samsung is essentially saying "buy our product, destroy your planet". That might sell in Korea but it doesn't sell in the United States of America.

People were making fun of apple when they kept the lightning bolt and the cable was a USB A. They said you couldn't connect it to any new MacBook. Well they included a USB C cable and people still are making fun.

i think the insult stems around the claim that the accessories are no longer included to save the planet.
I think that's pretty hard to swallow even for rabid environmental fanatics.

Agreed. The insult is that Apple is trying to make themselves look altruistic, when this is about $$. Apple should just be honest about it.

You're 100% right - they will ditch it like they did headphone jacks (after mocking Apple about that)...I'd have more respect for Samsung if they stayed the course instead of following Apple.
Let’s be honest, you wouldn’t either way.

And they should. I may have a bunch of USB Type A chargers laying around but I don’t own one USB-C charger and now if I want to use the cord that comes with the new iPhone, I’ll be forced to buy one.

If they were to have said “Hey, we like money and not giving you an adapter helps.”, then I’d had more respect for them than the environment angle they led with.

Serious question to those saying they are upgrading from a phone that came with a USB-A adapter. Does the iPhone 12 prevent USB-A lightning, like the ones customers already have, from working? Only the new cable would be different. And it specifically allows fast charging.
[automerge]1602807700[/automerge]
all USB-A....good luck with you’re new iPhone

So iPhone 12 will not work with USB-A to Lightning cables that this user already has? USB-C to Lightning only enables fast charging.
