Aren't they removing it for space and you get better audio quality with the lightning connection?

I know it's not a popular move, but those are the reasons right?

I think they are removing it because the design team have their heads up their asses. I have some very nice Shure headphones that currently work with my iPhone, iPad, laptop and desktop. Basically anything i want to plug them into, without the need for any kind of special (expensive) adaptor. Removing the headphone jack is about as useful as putting tits on a fish.

Apparently the audio quality is supposed to be better. It might be in a lab environment, but try it on public transport and I bet nobody could tell the difference, especially on those crappy Apple earbuds. Somebody needs to go in and whack the design team with a piece of 4 x 2 and get them working on producing updates for the entire Mac range instead. Or maybe they should concentrate on making more watch straps that are too short? That's a good use of their time.

You guys know what I think Apple should do when they will start to remove the headphone jack for good from its iPhone 7?
Produce "low-budget" bluetooth Beats-headphones - with a unique design and a high recognition value just like the earPods - and give them to EVERY iPhone 7 buyer FOR FREE. They will proudly use and wear their "for-free-beats-headphones" in their everyday lifes.
Within the first 6 weeks of selling the new iPhone 7 (in which there will have been huge headphone-jack discussions in the media about the new iPhone with its missing hole) everybody in the whole world will recognize the special iPhone 7 bluetooth headphones and therefore every iPhone 7 user. I think this would make a huge advertisement for both the new iPhone 7 no-headphone-jack-generation AND the Beats brand.

I agree with most of this, but to be fair, your ear requires an analog input. At some point that digital signal has to be turned into an analog one. As a practical matter, it does make some sense for that place to be in your phone, instead of making it necessary to have a DAC in every pair of headphones you buy.

I was all for the elimination of the floppy disk and DVD drives, but this feels different to me. I can't say I'm excited to have to buy new headphones I either need to charge or can only use with my iPhone, or to carry an adapter around. We'll see.

Same could be said for 8K UHD. Do you think anyone would be arguing against that?

People also bitched about the removal of a CD drive on MacBooks, not supporting flash on iPhone, not including flash in OS X, et cetera, et cetera. People will get over it.

Except this time they don't remove the floppy/cdrom for a common standard (USB connector/Flash), but for a Apple proprietary port. It would be like removing the cdrom for the Apple iCDROM with a proprietary connector and disc.

This is completely different than removing the CD drive. Headphones are not computer accessories and have been around for decades before Apple existed.

Explain how Apple is going to tell people that they need different headphones for use with their Apple phone and their Apple laptop! I could almost but it if they switch to USB-c on the new phone so the new headphones would work with all their (and other companies') future gear. But Lightning headphones are just a dumb idea.

Hopefully, this rumor is false but I guess we'll see in a couple of months.

I also remember Samsung mocking iPhone users plugged into walls because of the non-removable battery.

I remember a saying .. people who live in glass houses shouldn't ... yeah. Perhaps Samsung should figure that out.

I would be fine with them removing the headphone jack if the iPhone main connector was NOT a proprietary port (lightning).

If it were USB-C, sure, go for it... At least with USB-C, it's a standard the entire tech industry is transitioning to.

Denison didn't mention Apple on stage, but it's clear his headphone jack comments were directed at the Cupertino-based company and its plans to eliminate the 3.5mm headphone jack in future iPhones.

Or it was a comment made toward all smartphone manufacturers in general who have removed (e.g. Motorola Moto Z and Moto Z Force; LeEco Le 2, Le 2 Pro, and Le Max 2) or are thinking of removing the 3.5mm jack from their smartphones.

And I think you don't understand that even without 3.5mm jack iPhone will still need a DAC chip (unless you prefer to "digital" sound on the phone's internal speakers). You can also notice that all hifi equipment (preamplifiers/DACs/amplifiers etc. costing many thousands of dollars) come with an analog jack for the phones.

You do understand that arguing against innovation isn't a stable platform for any argument, but hey, let's all just go back to the cave shall we?

If Apple are wrong on this, then you can have the last laugh, ok?

weird how so few people in the audience seemed to get the reference

I think less than 5 people clapped?
Now that is weak !!

I think the rest were expecting it without the audio jack
( they want what the iphone might have )

Absolutely true. I think they meant "makes twice as much money as Samsung," which is pithy but may also not be accurate. I haven't looked up the numbers. But Apple definitely bring in way more profit.

Never understood the logic of this. Do people also proclaim how profitable they were to a car dealership when buying a new car? Maybe it's a cultural thing but around here we like more product for same or less money.

I can never understand why people keep insisting others to try something that used to be terrible and now just becomes tolerable, while the latter have already been using something else that's been nice from day one. It's almost like the former has an agenda to steer people away from something at all cost.

LOL..yep, have you tried that bloatware? It's pretty nice. It just mixes in with android and makes things nifty.

Btw..my daughter was using her aunt's HP laptop the other day. It was loaded with crap. "Daddy, please help, this isn't acting right" Yep, kinda like buying a samsung phone. Android filled with samsung crapware. But I guess the mainstream loves their bloatware. Heck, they're the ones used to it since they're the ones who buy it. Oh well, someone has to keep the likes of McAfee in business.

“Want to know what else it comes with?" He asked. “Android OS. I'm just saying," he added with a smirk as the audience laughed.

Another zealot who blindly follows a company. Seriously, Android is a great operating system. So is iOS in its own way. It has a lot of features that only now Apple is adopting. Just look at iOS 10. Basically mimicking things Android has had for years. Why can't people appreciate both of them?

Removal of a feature is not innovation. All smart phones have had digital interfaces (lightning or USB) for many years and nobody cared to bother to use them for headphones (lightning headphones did exist but nobody was buying them). So Apple is not innovating anything here they are just removing one feature.

What, you've never used any sort adapter for any kind of device? They do make adaptors you know, they'll make one for this too. I've got about a dozen 8mm-3.5mm audio adapters if you want.

You really have no idea what you're talking about. First of all why would a Samsung phone come with Sony anything? If there is an app that comes on it that you do find to be bloat, you can disable it and it's gone from your view. Not really a big issue?

I would love to have expandable storage on my iPhone. I use the headphone jack all the time at home only for speakers. So a dongle wont be such a big deal. Plus, I mainly use my old iPhone 3gs and 5 to listen to music.

Cringe worthy and very pathetic to mock a phone that hasn't been released yet.

I reckon in a few years time more manufacturers (Samsung included) will remove the 3.5mm headphone port and use the USB Type C, and then advertise the fact of the better audio quality by using this.

If Apple do remove the 3.5mm port (which I think they will) they are going to respond to criticism with the argument of improved audio quality but not using the 3.5mm port. Definitely going to be a controversial move, removing the 3.5mm port though.

The removal of the headphone jack will be a slight inconvenience but only for a year or so

Not for me, I love using my earbuds for phone calls, especially while driving. But while driving I hook my iPhone up to the cars' head unit.

So if the jack is removed, basically I will have to choose keeping my earbud headset in, or plugging the iPhone into the head unit.

I guess I could switch them while driving.

We don't need different headphones, we need a different phone. With Google taking everything in-house to get around the fragmentation issue, the Nexus line up will be interesting.

Samsung mocks Apple for trying to remove wires. Hmmm never heard of Samsung trolling anyone about wires. Oh yea their wireless charging B.S. because it's too hard for their fanboys to plug in a single charging cable. So they don't want wires when your phone is stationary and charging but they want wires when your ambulatory. Doesn't make any sense to me.

What's a headphone jack?

Just when you think you know what a headphone jack is, you see headphones that can just get out of the way. And a connection you can use, even while swimming. When you see a headphone jack that can do all that, it might just make you realize "Hey, this thing is wireless!"

Imagine what your headphone jack could do, if your headphone jack didn't exist.
