I personally don’t care about the headphone jack and like you am happy using my airpods. However I don’t buy the making space argument because Samsung have been able to keep the headphone jack and still have thin phones, with even better water resistance.

I do agree it will push things along but I’m not sure it was necessary at this point in time and I understand why some people aren’t happy about it. A bit like removing the optical drive on macs. Was a bit too early when they did it. Same with the ports on MacBooks. Most people aren’t ready for it.

It’s actually because of the flexible oled screen and it’s connected display controller that Apple removed the headphone jack.
In order to eliminate the chin they needed to drop the headphone jack.

No bottom bezel > 3.5mm jack + weird bottom bezel.

When your main sales argument is to discredit others, it is that your company is not doing well....

You think?

That whole headphone jack thing is so years ago...can they move on at this point?
No, because it is still an issue, and the fact that it is still an issue after "so years ago" is indicative of the premature decision by Apple to drop the jack. I agree, though, that many folks who still value the jack have moved to Android from Apple. I do think that playing that up in an advert is no longer necessary. Those who want the jack have already moved on.

They also include lighting headphones that are usless with your MacBook Pro or any other non iOS device. Want to connect your iPhone to your brand new MacBook Pro? Nope, you can’t do that either. “A double dongle!!” Sounds like something Cook invented.

You don’t need s cable to connect your iPhone to your MacBook Pro.

I gave my son my old ip7+, and he HATES it because of the dongle issue. Plus my wife is upset with her MacBook; again the dongle. We spent two hours late in NYC hunting down a dongle for my son. The dongles are STUPID and show Apple's arrogance.

Lol at using dongles.

And they're doing it wrong. That ad is their product vs ALL the competition...not a single company.
At the time the "I'm a Mac; I'm a PC" ads were made, the PC was (and still mostly is) synonymous with Microsoft. You did tangentially nail something else - when those Apple ads came out, in 2006, the Mac was pretty much Apple's product (as per singular). The only other major Apple product line was the iPod.

They removed the headphone jack on the iPhone 7.....

Edit: ... to make space for the Taptic Engine.

You know Apple stopped running those ads in 2009 and has t run anything like them since.
Probably just coincidental that 2009 was just two years after the iPhone came out. Times were a-changin' - the Mac was no longer Apple's main product line, though not as obviously the case as today.

When Apple ran the Mac-vs-PC ads from 2006 to 2009... they were in a bad place. Single digit market share and very low sales of Macintosh. They were in a weak position.

So what does this say about Samsung... the current and long-time leader in smartphone sales? Are they actually admitting that they're not doing so well after all?

I understand what Apple was doing back then. But I guess I don't understand what Samsung's play is here. (unless they are actually scared of Apple)
Those Apple ads came out around the time Apple switched to Intel for Macs. A LOT of PC users switched to the Mac around that time. It was, at the time, clearly better hardware, and could run OSX, Windows, and increasingly Linux. I was working with a Windows Server support group when those ads came out - our group had about ten members on staff - and with the exception of two holdouts, every person on our group switched to MBP's for their personal laptop machines. It was kind of funny to see so many Macs out for our weekly Windows staff meetings.

But the first removed it in the 7. Was that to see how the market would respond ?

Fair enough it this is true they could have let everyone know why more comprehensively. Not bither about it myself but I can see why it’s a point of contention for some.

Not necessarily as some people don’t upgrade every year and may have kept hold of their previous phones for 2-3 years. Also it doesn’t hurt to remind people why you think your device is better than the competition.

These adverts are embarrassing. Why doesn't Samsung focus on showcasing their products instead of bashing the competition? Are they trying to be Microsoft or something?!

Don't forget Apple did the same kind of videos to Microsoft, and everyone thought it was funny. Now the shoe is on the other foot. The Mac vs PC commercials that Apple did for years

Pretty obvious statement there brthr but no worries...the point Apple is trying to make is to push things along by removing it. Otherwise it takes 5 times as long to move a widely adopted “anything”. I mean how long has usb-c been available and people are still making that crappy I/O usb-a? Apple’s keynote when they announced the change gave all their reasons for removing it and I think they’re all valid and honest reasons. Just my opinion is all. Any space in these skinny phones these days is prime real estate for other more appropriate tech. It’s still a transition period some day fairly soon enough most all people will have wireless everything and we’ll all laugh at when we had to deal with the inconvenience of cords.
But why does the use of Bluetooth over wired needs to be pushed along.
Bluetooth does not offer improved audio experience. Headphones are a out audio e perience.

Of course but the lack of Headphone Jack quite possibly is the deal breaker for some and the consumer who would have otherwise preferred the iPhone has been forced to go elsewhere not just to a different phone but platform as well due to Apple shortsightedness.

That’s fair. I suppose Apple is okay not catering to those individuals then. It’s a business decision they made and there are plenty of people that are just fine with it. In business, you’re not always going to make everyone happy. Apple doesn’t owe me anything as a consumer, it’s a product purchase. I guess I don’t see it the same way that you and others do. I get your point though.

For most people though, Bluetooth audio is comparable and the convenience of wireless is clearly the advantage. They preferred to use that space for the Taptic Engine, a bigger battery, and to help with making the device more water resistant. Things they felt were more important.

I'm not sure what the big deal is.... I use wireless Jaybird X2's the majority of the time, but when I use wired headphones I have the 3.5/lightning adapter attached to them (pretty much permanently) and move them between my iPhone and iPad, listening via lightning port.

How good to headphones really need to be on devices where you listen to lossy compressed audio formats....

No. It was in relation to a touch screen.

On a phone

They did they kept saying there was no more room for it... they were just talking about devices in development not the iPhone 7.

The market wouldn’t have responded well to a $1000+ flagship that removes such a legacy feature.

But by the time the iPhone X came out, people complained about the lack of a 3.5 mm jack for a solid year on the iPhone 7, it was pretty much a none starter with the X. And iPhone X sales reflects as much.

Also by the time the iPhone X launched most Apple users looking to upgrade already had a set of AirPods, another Bluetooth handset or got used to the 3.5mm adapter with the iPhone 7. I believe that’s the reason we didn’t see an AirPod update last year.

During this time the industry shifted as well and we started to see other oems start to ditch the legacy 3.5 connector, like google with the pixel, others such as lg shifted the 3.5 mm jack to the top of the phone( Apple couldn’t do that because of Face ID and the space it takes up at the top of device).

TBH, removing it for the first time on the X would have been the ideal time, considering it was the radical "future of the iPhone"

Were you even on the boards when the iPhone 7 launch, people took it very personally.

When the x launch people wouldn’t stop going on an on about the notch and the price but very few brought up the 3.5 mm jack.

Preemptively removing it on the iPhone 7 worked for Apple and the iPhone X sales proves it.

I completely agree. I hadn’t used my headphone jack since my iPhone 5 and I don’t see it being a huge deal to place a dongle at the end of your wire and leave it there if that’s what you so choose. I feel the benefits were greater in the end.

It’s just not worth the space in my eyes, any space. The benefits of a wireless connection far outweigh any concessions they would need to make to keep it in their phones.

double dongle... :D
Well... valid points there... Frankly, some of them are the reason why the 6S and SE are still popular. IMHO Apple needs to pull their head of the place where the sun doesn't shine... customers are lazy, they don't change quickly, but add enough invonveniences and they'll leave over time. Compensating that over higher device prices isn't going to scale that much...
Next iPhone better be a rock solid release like the new Macs...

For most people though, Bluetooth audio is comparable and the convenience of wireless is clearly the advantage.
Too bad Apple doesn't support APT-X on their 1000$ phone... Ironically, the cheapest macbook does.
