Yes, good on 'em. They could have tried to brush it under the rug or whatever other method to hush it up. It's only happened on 2 devices in South Korea but they are looking at a possible worldwide recall. So yes, good on 'em

Actually it's too late to brush it under the rug now that this news is on all the major media outlets. Ever think that has something to do with it?

Hmm. This oddly positive response to exploding phones wouldn't be related to your post in the "Note 7 Switchers" thread, would it?

Wow...that's a serious answer haha. You think it's that much better? I just ordered mine and get it tomorrow. I'm excited but I'm afraid I'll miss my iPhone like I have in the past whenever I dabbled with Android.

Please do report back on your mail-in experience ;)

Actually it's too late to brush it under the rug now that this news is in on all the major media outlets. Ever think that possibly that has something to do with it? I've never seen such a sleazy company get so many pats on the back.

And you can bet that if someone does get seriously injured from this fault then a large pile of hush money will be headed their way

I thought Samsung batteries were generally of high quality. I have a rechargeable battery pack for camping with Samsung batteries in it.... :(

These things can literally happen to ANY hardware manufacturer, lets be honest here.

And Apple has had its misfortune of badly made supplied parts as well, though fortunately exploding batteries were never the case.

Even Sony, a reputable high-quality company has had bad luck with self-igniting batteries.

Let's hope no one got seriously injured here, rather than feeling joy over a competitor's misfortune.

And I am pleasantly surprised, that this is the common mantra here, most people can agree on!

I guess this is why my order page for the Note 7 went from "shipping early September 2016" this morning to "Ship Time Not Available" this afternoon. :)

A better question is, will they get just new batteries, or all new phones, or will they get refurbs

None of these seem terribly difficult to answer with minimal thought

will they get just new batteries,
Well, that's not what a recall is so, no.

or all new phones, or will they get refurbs

How many refurbs do you imagine are available for a 2 week old phone? The whole "exploding" thing makes it extra unlikely.

No, I think the real question was the one you replied to, "Will these Note7 users get loaner phones?". Will they? Or will their $850 phones just be gone with no replacement in the meantime?

Imagine if u bought a car, and it caught fire driving along..

"My battery just exploded"

As well they should, considering the unusually high percentage of profit they make off their products.
the profit that any company makes should have no bearing on making things right. I would expect any company to stand behind their products regardless of their profitability. If a company doesn't stand behind their product in accordance to my expectations, then I won't buy their products.

I guess it depends on whether the problem is limited to a batch of batteries or with something deeper. I'm of a split mind on the new vs. refurb deal. In my mind, if I have an issue with a new, or relatively new device, I would expect a new phone in return. If it's 9 months old or out of warranty, I wouldn't expect a new phone in return.

Not sure what Samsung would do as I've not really looked into their past history for this type of stuff.

The device itself is only weeks from release. Doesn't seem like refurb really enters the equation*. I do wonder if Samsung have anything like enough devices ready to replace existing ones though. I wonder what the turnaround time for the phoneless owners will be.

*unless they pry out the glued in batteries and replace them that way before returning in which case, lol

edit: and I just re-read the op where the Samsung spokesperson said "The problem can be simply resolved by changing the battery". One born every minute

They started replacing bent phones immediately. I don't remember all the "good for them for responding so quickly" posts like I'm seeing in this nauseating thread.

That's because Apple doesn't have thousands of paid shills who's sole job is to fill up forums and social media comments all over the internet with positive comments about their products like Samsung does.

I don't. You considder this decision as something rare, and "brave" while I considder this as the only way on how to deal with potentional timebombs.

It's a strange world when people start to think this decision is something special or brave or anything associated with odd while this is just the only thing a company could do. Unless you as a company consider unethical decisions as the norm.

Haha, I agree. Had this story been about the new iPhone, the reaction around here (ironically enough) would've been totally different..another Apple bashfest for sure..certainly not multiple posts on the first few pages commending Sansung for potentially recalling their exploding phones. This place feels more like an android forum these days.

Yep. They did, and do, pay Korean students to post online, COINTELPRO style.

The forums are seriously sick and if I posted why I thought that was I'd surely be banned (I probably still will be, just not right now)

Not a big fan of Samsung but I actually give them mad props for this. I can't help but wonder if Apple would've simply waited and see how things panned out if they were in a similar situation.

If the past is any indication, it would take a huge effort by users to get Apple to do an announced recall. I'm pretty sure Apple wouldn't mind taking care of it quietly at an Apple Store though.

I highly doubt Apple would ever do a recall on the iPhone no matter how bad the problem really ended up being. Apple would just blame it on 3rd party chargers and/or cables or anything else they could toss in (while quietly changing suppliers).

Just too much is at stake for Apple to have an actual recall on the iPhone for any reason, large or small. (image, revenue, etc)
